chucelli October 8, 2009 October 8, 2009 Redbugs are definitely no cause for concern or panic. They don't usually kill the coral either. Interceptor is actually one of the safest treatments out of the many reef related ailments you could have IME. Corals don't seem to have any reaction to it, unlike other iodine based dips. The only things you should remove prior to treatment are any crustaceans you want to live. This includes any ornamental shrimps and crabs you may have. Your pod population will suffer a bit, but will come back in time.
lanman October 9, 2009 Author October 9, 2009 Spoke to my cats' vet tech today about getting some Interceptor; the vet apparently wasn't there. He wouldn't give me a prescription, unless I could bring him a dog for a check-up. Will have to find another. Or borrow a neighbor's dog, and call him 'Acropora'. Heeeere, Acro!! Good dog! What's interesting is - I'm not the first person to ask him for Interceptor to treat redbugs; someone else was in with the same request about 6 months ago. He didn't get any, either. bob

I can't believe you went to the vet and they wouldn't give you any. Its freaking heart worm medicine.

True in this case - they do not carry the stuff. So they wouldn't make a nickle. They carry a competitive brand. He suggested I try PetSmart. bob

I think it really takes a personal relationship with a vet, and a dog record they can file the prescription against to stay out of trouble.
Hilary October 9, 2009 October 9, 2009 I talked my vet into it this evening. He's been my vet for 10 years and already thinks that I'm a nutcase, so the tech wasn't surprised when I made my request. When my vet called me to follow up on the note I left his main concern was whether I knew the right dosage for the tank, and what size pill to prescribe. +1 on the relationship thing.

This guy has been my vet for 20 years... but I only visit him about once every 5 or so. Not much of a relationship. bob
Hilary October 10, 2009 October 10, 2009 Mine spotted me coming out of a bar last time I was in Key West, and made a point of chasing me down (not difficult after several beers!) to say hi.
lanman October 10, 2009 Author October 10, 2009 Mine spotted me coming out of a bar last time I was in Key West, and made a point of chasing me down (not difficult after several beers!) to say hi. I don't blame him... bob
DDiver October 10, 2009 October 10, 2009 i also asked a few vets and they said it was a liability thing...
chucelli October 13, 2009 October 13, 2009 I spoke to a vet that wanted to charge me $75 new patient fee and have me bring in a redbug so he can examine it before he would agree to prescribe Interceptor.
steveoutlaw October 13, 2009 October 13, 2009 Man.......the H-E-double hockey sticks with narcotics.......you can make quite a living dealing interceptor!!
dbartco October 13, 2009 October 13, 2009 My sister is a vet and she still gives me a hard time about interceptor!! Luckily, I have a dog as well.
