FishyTim January 30, 2009 January 30, 2009 poor shrimp....he would have lived a nice long life in my tank....
steveoutlaw January 30, 2009 January 30, 2009 Ok, getting boring here Tim. While I do love the gladiator battles......you have to put something in the tank that has a chance against the mantis. Like maybe, another mantis. Are the spearers and smashers ill tempered towards each other???

dabgood21 January 31, 2009 January 31, 2009 That's crazy man. I don't know why you would ever want a mantis shrimp. I'd get rid of it. They cause too many problems and are waaaaay too aggressive. PLus, it's a waste of money and life

PLus, it's a waste of money and life True, but this IS nature, and this exact thing happens every second in the wild. Hurry up with the editing of the full video, definitely want to see what happens. My money is obviously on the mantis. I'd like to see the mantis go against a giant arrow crab. I've seen some pretty big ones at Scales before.

Too many problems, waste of money, and life. It's just nature. No different to me than feeding your fish flakes/cubes/etc which are made from ground up fish. Except it is more natural.
NAGA January 31, 2009 January 31, 2009 You know Tim.............I personally love watching that stuff and I will share something I did once that was quite spectacular to watch and perhaps you can try it if you dare. I put up a Super Jumbo Maryland Crab ( which was hand picked from hundreds that came off the boat) against a 16" Clown Trigger. Battle lasted about 50 minutes at which point the Clown Trigger took out the eyesight of the crab and then bit by bit dismembered the crab. Quite gruesome and would have been a spectacular thing to tape but, didn't think of it at the time. The crab though got a number of licks on the trigger and the trigger did not come out unscathed. He definitely was in some pain but, earned that meal. GET A BIG BLUE CRAB AND WATCH THEM DUKE IT OUT!

I thought you guys had figured out by now I wasn't interested in silly stuff like that. As a side note, I recall overklok telling me he matched a blue crab against a trigger and had to kill the crab because it was gonna win. Crazy stuff. Edited January 31, 2009 by extreme_tooth_decay

PLus, it's a waste of money and life Oh no! The sky is falling. When I had my 6" Peacock, I also had an 8" Niger Trigger (my 2 favorite pets) in the same tank. They would go at it from time to time, but neither ever got seriously hurt. I believed that they learned to live peacefully with each other.
extreme_tooth_decay January 31, 2009 Author January 31, 2009 HAHAH I told you to do this too......the biggest one at Scales was one I took back in after eating all my shrimp!!!!!! Indeed I have been asked several times to try an arrow crab...and I have. Twice. One I bought, another one a fellow brought over. Unfortunately, those "fights" just weren't very interesting. My mantis isn't interested in them. He goes over and sniffs at them, they stick out their long legs, and he just goes home. I don't know if he's afraid, or senses they don't have much meat, hasn't been hungry enough at the time, or what. They tend to take up residence in my tank for like a week until finally one morning the mantis had eaten him. tim
