octopus January 5, 2009 Share January 5, 2009 Thought I would share pics of my other hobby. I'm not really a photographer but I like to take some pics. There are some cool places out there to "urban explore". I still need a new camera. Abandoned mental hospital and a boys detention center. Maybe I'll post up some other pics from other places I've explored another time, if thats ok. Thanks for lookin.

MisterTang January 5, 2009 Share January 5, 2009 A guy where I work does the same kind of thing - looks around for spooky old places, and then takes pictures of 'em. He found an old mental hospital in WVa, and got some really chilling shots of it. If you haven't been to Hampshire County in West Virginia - just over the border from Winchester - you should go. They still have a lot of old abandoned houses around, some of them dating back to the late 19th century.

octopus January 5, 2009 Author Share January 5, 2009 Thanks alot everyone! Alot of these places are kinda creepy at times, mostly because the basements are always dark. I've never been a real believer in ghosts, but I would love to see one sometime...sorta. There are tons of places around out there and a little research will get you there. Sometimes you can find a spot with no vandalism or graffiti, and thats a real gem. The problem with telling people about the locations is chances are word spreads and the place gets destroyed. Spray paint, broken windows, stolen property. are all the things we try to avoid. It's also not exactly legal to go inside most of these places. These places have alot of history and should be respected, sorry if I can't tell an exact location. I'll post some other pics later. Thanks again everyone. m3fan8ic January 27, 2009 Share January 27, 2009 A crappy Fujifilm E510 digital point and shoot, with a tripod and a touch of post processing. it shows the skillz and tripod is a must for crispy clear shots..i've been thinking about getting a tripod but they are too darn expensive.. :( one of these days..too many hobbies and not enought $$$.. MisterTang January 27, 2009 Share January 27, 2009 Also: can't you get arrested for this kind of thing?
dshnarw January 28, 2009 Share January 28, 2009 Also: can't you get arrested for this kind of thing? i can only speak for my adventures, in which the answer is not really. in any case possible, i personally speak to the property owner and obtain permission (although this was much easier in kentucky when i just wanted to check out the old barn in the field). if there's no owner on record, i like to run it by the local police. their general concern is always theft/vandalizing property and personal safety. in those cases where the place isnt truly about to cave in, the local pd is often quite helpful especially if they understand that you're interested in the history of the location and discretely documenting it with photos. going that route ensures that the activities are legal if/when confronted. if that weren't the case, i have no reason to think anyone would ever be arrested for simple trespassing in an abandonment, without having some criminal record that suggests they were up to more than trespassing or running if a policeman sees you. My understanding is that, in most states, a simple trespassing violation might result in a ticket, with a cost similar to a fine for speeding (in kentucky, since i know the laws there much better, the fine for trespassing is actually cheaper than that for speeding...not personal experience, my mother worked for a lawyer). As long as you're doing nothing but photographing the location - not stealing/vandalizing, not breaking and entering, not carrying around crowbars or spray paint cans like an idiot - the officer would just ask you to leave the location. Again, they're really more concerned with public safety and preventing vandalism/fires in the building moreso than preventing someone from taking some pictures.
