Bruce's (bbyatv) Larger Mixed Reef

Recommended Posts

(edited)

I found some new pics of the build.

This pic shows one of the leveling devices I built into the stand. There is a screw jack like this one in each corner so that I can adjust the flow over each overflow exactly how I want it no matter what surface the stand is on.

No closed loop return plumbing yet.

The trash can overflows. Ya, I am a cheap one.

Thanks Larry. My wife just thinks I am cheap.

Bruce

Not cheap; frugal & resourceful :-)

My new ASM G3 skimmer stuffed into its new home. As good a skimmer as the RS-80 was, it was just not enough for the load I have in the 90g tank.

I was going to take the gate valve off my RS-80 and put it on the G3 but did not have to. I found the G3 very easy to get dialed in. It ran it over night and in the morning the head was just where I wanted it. If I need to I will add the gate valve, but for nw I am happy without it.

As far as re-circ I am not sure about doing this on this skimmer. I have the equipment, but once done the skimmer would no longer fit in the sump. It is a very tight fit without the re-circ mod.

If I ever jup to a bigger sump, maybe I would do it then. For now I am going to see how it goes straight out of the box.

Bruce

Did you recirc the pump on the G3? or any other Mods?

I have been fighting hair algae so I added a limewood airstone to my ASM G3.

It sure works a ton better.

I am maximizing the skimming power so I also added a second skimmer that I had lying around.

The algae is dying off so fast I can see it screaming in pain as it starves.

Here are some pics.

Added airstone line:

Additional little skimmer.

Bothe skimmers plumbed to a bottle with a float switch.

Man does my water look good and the algae really is dying very fast. I would say there is only 1/3 left after only a few days.

I have also cut back on the amouont of food in the tank and replaced the bulbs over my macro algae with bigger ones.

The corals seem brighter too.

very nice. I noticed your stand has no center brace. Is there any signs of bowing in the center of the front of the tank?

None what so ever. The doors are a very tight fit and they still close very nice. No bowing at all so far.

I started using 4 of the ZeoVit products on 11/18/08. I wanted to add some pictures to show before and after. I will re-post some pics in about 3 weeks to see if the ZeoVit stuff seems to work. I also changed my photo period from about 8 hours of MH and 10 hours of T5 to 10.5 hours of MH and 12.6 hours of T5.

My goal being to get better color. I seem to have very good growth and polyp extension.

I started using:

ZeoStart2

ZeoBak

Zeo Amino Acids

Zeo Pohl's Coral Vitalizer

Maybe these 2 changes will help.

Looking good Bruce.

Are those curved PVC overflows noisy?

I'll be curious how this works-out; thanks.

The PVC overflows are not any noisier than the larger overflows I had before. In fact they are very quiet. The one problem is that if I get anything blocking the flow into them, the water level in the tank rises and results in some water being added to the system from the RO/DI unit.

As a result I clean them every Saturday morning.

I have a thread on my turf scrubber. I have found it to work very well at keeping the phosphates down. I no longer run phosbgone.

If you are interested here is a link:

Thanks a bunch.

Your tank looks very nice. I like the variation of corals you have going in there.
