yauger October 12, 2007 October 12, 2007 I have been using Oceanic Salt for the past year and haven't had any problems with it, however that doesn't mean that it is the best salt out there... What salt mixes out there do you use? and how well has it worked out for you? What do you think is the most cost effective salt brand out there? consider cost, amount (200 gallons ect) ease of use, dissolves easily, concentration of calcium... I have tested a fresh batch of Oceanic salt mix last night and the water specs were: RO Water used : 6 tds Ammonia : 0 Phosphates : 0 (from what I can tell, the colors are hard for me to distinguish) Nitrates : 0 Calcium : 330 (kinda low)
gastone October 12, 2007 October 12, 2007 50/50 oceanic and IO. I don't even know if it is in vogue any longer. I'm sure there is some new combination that is hot these days. Garrett.

Gatortailale October 12, 2007 October 12, 2007 SEARCH button ....... it's located at top of forum page - try it - never know what you might find ........ IO + RO/DI water
flowerseller October 12, 2007 October 12, 2007 I combine IO and water. You combine it with water? Brilliant....... Sounds like a question for TOTM
wreck October 12, 2007 October 12, 2007 Instant Ocean Reef Crystals, some times Regular IO and some times mix of the two, oh and RO/DI water. Is this dumb? Should I just stick with one mix? Wreck
rrubberbandman October 12, 2007 October 12, 2007 i try to avoid salt...doc says it hurts my blood pressure.
yauger October 12, 2007 Author October 12, 2007 has anyone tested a fresh batch of salt? some many people mix their salts but do you have any results?
Antiguan October 12, 2007 October 12, 2007 Check this: http://www.wamas.org/forums/index.php?show...5&hl=result
yauger October 12, 2007 Author October 12, 2007 Check this: http://www.wamas.org/forums/index.php?show...5&hl=result thanks bro, I read that thread awhile ago when it was active, it had a lot to do with ALK readings and Salferit test kits... I was just looking for information concerning peoples best experiences with salt and the readings of calc, best mixes of salt plus results of batch testing... I think there is a specific thread on RC I will try to search for later tonight... most of my searching is from there anyways just wanted to see if others in our club had some good information concerning what salt (combination) would be the best for your reef system.
BeltwayBandit October 12, 2007 October 12, 2007 This is the only salt I currently use. (Of course I am between tanks at the moment.)
st9z October 12, 2007 October 12, 2007 if you test ur new mix salt water and find 2 Nirates would it be because of the salt use to mix or the RO/DI water?
Black Mammoth October 12, 2007 October 12, 2007 I'm a big fan of Reef Crystals. There are some other salt mixes that people rave about as well. I decided to stick with Reef Crystals because of the availability (esp 160gal buckets). The results have also been good. I have higher calc and alk levels.
jamal October 12, 2007 October 12, 2007 i used to do reef crystals but i kept getting a precipitation so i switched to io salt and it haas worked well for me and mixes very quickly
flowerseller October 12, 2007 October 12, 2007 Is it at all possible you accidently flicked cigar ashes in the salt mix by mistake?
Leishman October 12, 2007 October 12, 2007 if you test ur new mix salt water and find 2 Nirates would it be because of the salt use to mix or the RO/DI water? Test the RO and find out

jamal October 13, 2007 October 13, 2007 Is it at all possible you accidently flicked cigar ashes in the salt mix by mistake? that must be it no more smoking and reefing together
treesprite October 13, 2007 October 13, 2007 that must be it no more smoking and reefing together isn't that kind of an oxymoron?
rioreef October 13, 2007 October 13, 2007 Instant Ocean only...since my first marine tank in 1992. BTW, Georgia Aquarium used 750 tons (1.5 million pounds) of Instant Ocean. I have been using Oceanic Salt for the past year and haven't had any problems with it Why mess with it???? It works for you and no problems. Change you salt and you run a risk of creating problems. Look for posts on problems people have when they change salts. So what if it the same ol' salt you have used. If it ain't broke...don't fix it! In closed systems stability is key. Mess with it and it will mess with you.
Sugar Magnolia October 13, 2007 October 13, 2007 i try to avoid salt...doc says it hurts my blood pressure. I switched from IO to Reef Crystals (same company) and my coraline growth exploded. Regular IO tests at about 1110 ppm. I haven't tested MG in a while ( ) .......but given the huge increase in coraline growth, I imagine it's right in the target range.
