Valeria August 8, 2007 August 8, 2007 It was a very very frustrating day for me today. It made me sit down and think of how much time, work, and money I put in the tank. I got home today and noticed that my gigantic anemone was completely deflated, and my little one was struggling. I stuck my hand in the tank to lift it up only to notice that the water was very hot- Looked at the thermometer and it was 97 F! I dumped 5 gallons of cool RO/DI water- turned off the lights, tossed ice (in a bag) inside the tank. Seems like the AC malfunctioned and shut off at some point in the day, so I restarted the AC. Ran to the store to get more ice, as dumped that in the tanks. The temperature seems under control now, but there will be some losses for sure. 1. Large 10
jamesbuf August 8, 2007 August 8, 2007 I'm so sorry to hear this. Hopefully some things will rebound. Hopefully you caught in in time. Keep us posted.
rsarvis August 8, 2007 August 8, 2007 So sorry to hear about your loss. I can commiserate. It's been a rough last week or so. I had a bangaii cardinal disappear, and one out of five longspine cardinals croaked; then this weekend one of my three new heniochus diphreutes faded within three days of bringing it home, and tonight I found that at some point a firefish carpet-surfed (and I can't find one of the other three). I think you should definitely take out the dead stuff. It's sad, and costly, but I've only been at it for about 7 months, and I have quite a bunch of beautiful critters left, so I'm not discouraged too much. But I can understand how a major event like AC failing would devastate things. But I hope you stick with it. It was a very very frustrating day for me today. dbartco August 8, 2007 August 8, 2007 the clam will foul quickly, get it out. pray for the rest, we'll get you reloaded
flowerseller August 8, 2007 August 8, 2007 Sorry to hear Carla. PM coming Yes, remove clam or anything else if confirmed dead. The tank temp likely went up slowly, therefore it should also come down slowly, but efficiently. Hoping that the r/o water was SG regulated and the ice was put into bags placed in the sump, and allowed to melt before replaceing for repeat. If not check SG now. I keep several frozen 1g milk jugs filled 3/4 in my freezer just for this senerio and would exchange if needed. It becomes an ice block and can easily adjust water by temporarily removing if the drop is to fast. I would slow the flow by 50% on your UV if you have one for as much as 2 weeks and then return to desired flow. Get ready for a few matched 20% WC every other day. I have 1.026 IO water on hand.
dandy7200 August 8, 2007 August 8, 2007 Sorry to hear this Carla :( Stick in there, it will get better. From the pictures it doesn't look as bad as it could have been. I would get the dead stuff out and do a 25% water change ASAP.
flowerseller August 8, 2007 August 8, 2007 Don't mess with the hammer or anemone unless they become brown jelly The other stuff will likely bleach so watch the lights
davelin315 August 8, 2007 August 8, 2007 I would avoid removing anything but the clam at this point in time. The sps are bleaching it looks like, although some chunks also look to be RTNing. If they are bleaching only, I would give them a chance to rebound. When they expel their zooxanthellae, they may or may not recover them when the conditions come back. The lps and the anemones look like they'll rebound. I would kill the lights for the time being and give them a bit of darkness and cool water and see what happens over the next few days. One thing to be concerned about is your water quality. I would keep a quantity of replacement water on hand in case you need to do a water change quickly.
jason the filter freak August 8, 2007 August 8, 2007 Wow sorry to hear this. Good that you came home when you did. It doesn't seem as bad as it could have been on the up side. Don't leave the hobby, you have a beautiful tank!
lanman August 8, 2007 August 8, 2007 I'll wear a black arm band for your nice clam... So sorry to hear about this. Hang in there. bob
YBeNormal August 8, 2007 August 8, 2007 You've got a whole club behind you Carla and I know many of us will do whatever we can to help you get things back in order. Hang in there and don't hesitate to ask if you need anything.
Valeria August 8, 2007 Author August 8, 2007 Thanks so much guys for all of your support. I just finished a 30% water change, disposed of the clam and took out the lps to another tank. I will update tomorow. funny how the reason I got in this hobby in the first place came out during the water change.
johnnybv August 8, 2007 August 8, 2007 Don't give up carla, anything worth doing has many dissapointments along the way. Control what you can control...... John

NRehman August 8, 2007 August 8, 2007 Carla, Sorry. Same thing happened to me a long time ago. I know how it feels. Give it a bit of time. Best, Nadir
Charlie97L August 8, 2007 August 8, 2007 Carla- I just went through the same thing a few weeks ago with my 90. We lost air coniditioning in the house, and it went up to 95 for about 8 hours. I lost all my sps and some of my bigger LPS. The only advice I can offer is not to give up on things too quickly. I had several coral (micromussa, acan, blasto) that looked a lot worse than some of the LPS pics that you posted, and they've recovered completely, in some cases, and in others, just lost a few heads, but the rest bounced back. Good luck, and try to see the positive in what survived! Charlie
jnguyen4007 August 8, 2007 August 8, 2007 Carla, I am so sorry to hear about your mishaps. Though I just started on mine with very few items in my tank. Even so, I can only imagine how devastated I would be if I was in your shoes. Hang in there and know that you have friends here who are more than willing to give a helping hand. James
ReeferMan August 8, 2007 August 8, 2007 Hang in there Carla we have all had our ups and downs in this hobby. Unless you make your tank a full time job, things like this can and will happen. I would recommend getting a ACIII if you have the extra funds as it could of prevented this by notifying you when the tanks temp started to increase. The good thing about this hobby is we all learn from our mistakes and problems that can happen, fix it and make sure it is less likely to happen again. Hang in there!
Guest Bethesda_Jim August 8, 2007 August 8, 2007 That's horrible. My sympathies, ma'am. It was a very very frustrating day for me today. mogurnda August 8, 2007 August 8, 2007 I'm really sorry, Carla. No matter how hard you try, something eventually goes wrong at some point. It will turn around.
