My First Tank

I will actually have a skimmer for sale in a couple of days. I just ordered a new pump for it which should come in today. After I run it and see how well it works I will price it. It is an in sump skimmer if that is what you are looking for LMK.

i don't see you but I hate it if I think I got a good shot and then when I view it I see my hands holding the camera or the logo of a hat I'm wearing. Anybody got any good tips on killing that reflection? Is it the angle of the lights inside the tank?

A lot depends on your level of patience and free time. I bought a 65 in April, and have been working away steadily. Finally put the first fish in last weekend.

Okay SOOO...as of today, I have one bulkhead for my closed loop drilled, and I also now have half of the manifold for it built (yay, progress ).

 

The only thing is I'm having a slight problem with dripping between the threaded 90 I mated to a threaded bulkhead. I've already tried plumbers tape, but it's not really doing too much to stop it--is there any way to get it to stop without glue???

Yes if it is threaded you dont want to use glue. Take it apart and use teflon tape again. Just making sure you wrap the tape in the correct direction and tighten well. If this connection is a drain and it is tightend enough you should have no problems.

If the teflon tape doesn't do it you could smear a thin layer of silicone on the threads and try that. Unlike glue, this will allow you to remove it later if you need to, it will just take a bit more torque (and probably a wrench). If it is something you would be taking off and putting back on a regular basis I wouldn't recommend it because it can be a bit of a pain to peel away the silicone from the threads (it can be done, just takes a while). For a dripping connection at the bulkhead though it should work great.

The other option is stuff my grandad always called plumbers dope - Otey brand, white cream in a tube. You spear it on the threads before putting the connections together - I always thought it worked better than teflon tape.

On the other hand... a window air conditioner would help everything!

 

You've got a lot of nice parts. Now I know why I'm hesitant to build a closed-loop system. Too many parts to break, leak, corrode, stop running, etc.

OH and I recently found out/was reminded of another RANDOM trip to florida....I'm leaving tomorrow around 4-4:30, and I won't be back until Sunday afternoon/evening.......I don't even think I knew I was supposed to go in the first place, which kind of irritates me because I'm SO CLOSE to being set up enough to start, and this puts a pretty big delay on things....grrr...

 

But apparently I have no choice but to go, so unfortunately my tank will have to wait....even longer......Oh well, it'll just have to get done as SOON as I get back

anyway I am back from florida, and with a question:

 

I'm looking for a good pump for my closed loop. I can have up to 1 1/2" piping for the inlet and up to 1" piping for the outlet. Anyone have any recommendations?

Haha well I have returned then! Haa yes, I definitely had a good time. We went to discovery cove in sea world and that was pretty amazing. I got to snorkel in a reef for as long as I wanted and, needless to say, I spent most of the day in there. Obviously with people swimming around in it all day, you cant have real corals or anything but the fish were pretty amazing. I saw a lot of fish I had never even seen before, and stingrays that were 6 ft. across from wing tip to wing tip. It was pretty amazing (and I took lots of pictures courtesy of my underwater camera will post soon). I also got to swim and play with a dolphin and I have several really good pictures of that. I'll post those soon as well.

 

But anyways, my pump question? Anyone?

I have a Panworld 100Px-x with the Dandy mod on mine and I am pretty happy with it. The Panworld / Blueline pumps are pretty reliable, almost maintenance free, solid performers. It is a little noisier than I would like, but still probably on the quiet side for a 1100-1200 gph external pump. 1" plumbing in and out.

2) is it going to rest on top of tank and braces or going on bottom of tank (inside).

So we know (from experience) that a number of fish like to find their way out of their tanks, and I'm not sure how it's all going to fit under the hood along with other things, but because some of our other projects for my tank are either taking longer than we thought or being temporarily delayed, we decided to make a net to cover the top. So far here is what we have:

 

 

 

We only bought enough supplies to make one side because we both had to work that day and time was limited, but the other half will be coming soon
