  1. Update: My zoanthids are still struggling some, but I think they're getting better. I've upped my water change amount significantly. In that pic above, it shows some type of algae that I've found is growing under almost all of my zoanthid colonies. At first I thought it was cyano (which it still might be), but I thought it was odd that it only grew under my zoanthids. Here's another pic of it: I'm going to be upgrading the skimmer and flow in the near future as soon as I can figure out exactly what type of skimmer I need. I'm talking to Dan as we speak, I think I'm going to buy one of his "6" models, customized to fit in my sump if its possible, lol. For flow I'm going to consider some full-blown streams on a controller.
  2. You definitely won't regret it. Be careful if you have a lot of softies though, they'll need to be acclimated to it slowly.
  3. If they don't have individual reflectors I'm not even sure if its worth considering IMO.
  4. Since this involves mushrooms it probably isn't a lighting issue, but I'd like to point out that watts per gallon is a very poor measure of light output. For instance, I've only got 3.12 watts/gallon, but since I'm running a Tek fixture where my T5s have individual reflectors, I'm getting great color out of my SPS and have bleached almost every softy thats gone in the tank. To the OP, I would guess you have a high amount of nutrients in the water, how about you give us a rundown on your equipment and what your parameters are. Are you having any algae problems?
  5. Just as a warning, I'm pretty sure the variety of Asterina stars that first ebay link pictures are coral eaters.
  6. If you read the link above from nano-reef, keep in mind that their acrylic tanks are not made from cast acrylic.
  7. Hardly, lol. I have seen people do that, however, just not on these boards.
  8. I'm not sure how you came to that conclusion after reading his post? Puppet politicians can be found in both parties. In fact, most politicians fall under this category. They're always looking out for number 1, and they'll do and say whatever it takes for them to get re-elected. And, being a conservative, I agree with treesprite. I also dislike our president and his ilk. In fact I find it insulting that they classify themselves as conservatives.
  9. Nah I haven't added anything in about 4 months. I'll test the water and see how it fairs up. I'll also do a large water change just in case. Thanks guys.
  10. I can test it, but I would imagine my SPS and gorgonian would be the first to show signs of poor water quality? My gut is telling me that something is munching on them, but I could be wrong.
  11. Something is decimating my zoanthid population and I can't for the life of me figure out what it is. At first I thought it was sundial snails, but I think the majority of the snails I've been removing are collonista :( Pics: From this: To this in about 2 months time: Thats the worst case of it, but all of my zoanthids have been suffering the same fate. Its really depressing to watch them wither away like this. The only fish that I have that may be a culprit is a Cherub Angel, but I watch him like a hawk and have never seen him nip at anything but my gorgonian when it sheds its slime coating (ALL my fish have this behavior though). Edit: Heres some more "after" shots that show the different types of damage done. These are all spaced out and most of the "mat" between the polyps has disappeared. Same with these: The polyps constantly look like something has eaten part of the skirt. They also have trouble closing after this happens.
  12. I've seen an awesome SPS dominated tank lit by VHOs only. In fact, he had MH over his frag tank but got better colors under the VHOs. His name was Paul, and he lives in Columbia, SC. I wish I knew anything about those NOVA fixtures, but I went out and bought a Tek fixture for my tank. Now I KNOW I have enough light by using T5s, but there seems to be a huge difference between the high end fixtures and the low end fixtures.
  13. It makes me incredibly happy to see people combating this alarmist notion of human induced global warming. If only we could pull the politics and media out of it and just let the scientists debate it out, then it would be perfect. I still don't understand why Al Gore feels that in order for us to do something for our environment, we have to be the root of the problem to begin with? Why not just preach conservation instead of giving the H-E-double hocky sticks, fire and brimstone message to go along with it? And please, for the love of God, stop with the carbon offsets. Planting trees to make up for your polluting ways will never be the same as just not polluting to begin with. Ugh he makes me sick.
  14. It seems like people who are just setting up a tank are always looking for ideas on how to aquascape their tank, so I figured we need one of these threads to give our newbies ideas. Here's the place to do it. If you have a picture of when your tank was freshly set up with little to no corals, post it. That way people can see how the tank got started compared to what it looks like grown in. Also, if you have any tips on what you think makes a good aquascape throw'em out there, along with the dimensions of your tank and the amount of live rock used.
  15. Looking good! Do you see any aggression between your 2 tangs and the butterfly?
  16. Hmm, I haven't taken that many pictures of my inverts.
  17. 36x24x20 Here's what he's building me next (I hope). A vivarium for poison dart frogs
  18. Sounds bad. The only "light green growth" I've ever seen on an SPS colony is algae building up on its dead skeleton. Can you tell if the tissue is receding around the area?
  19. I don't know the actual name, but it was a freebie I got from a ReeferMadness order. It was completely brown when they sent it to me.
  20. You'll never believe it, but I got that as a freebie from RM. It was 100% poop brown when they gave it to me. Let me give it a bit to start growing, but then I'll think about fragging it
