How high off the water for Metal Halides
jamesbuf replied to steveoutlaw's topic in General Discussion
I have mostly softies, and all my SPS I have are already at the top of the rock. If I ever get any expensive SPS I'll make sure to move it down. Thanks for letting me know. -
Didn't Carl have a gigantic tank delivered this summer. Has anyone heard from him? I'd really like to get an update.

How high off the water for Metal Halides

I have my T5s around 10" off the water and my corals are doing fine. -
That is just too sweet. Gotta love a footprint that size. I'd build up all the liverock in the middle and have the outer parimeter for swimming space. Soooo many options with those dimensions. Very nice. Can't wait to see pics after the transfer.

I agree with that. My false perc have hosted in my riteri, green bubble tip, rose bubble tip, long tentacle, my large frogspawn, and even my torch.

I stopped by the other day and the new coral room is coming along nicely. They claim they'll have it up and running within a months time. It looks like they're going all out too.

can't wait to see what the whole thing looks like. Once I finish school, NAGA better be ready build a similar one for me.

You could always add some anthias. The nyaquatics guy has lyretails for just $12 each. He's getting a new order in this Wednesday and if all goes as planned, I'm trying to have our group order finalized by this Thursday so we can have delivery on Saturday. Check out the group buy section if you're interested.

Yeah for real, prove it. Come over and take some pics of my tank for me. My crappy sony doesn't cut it.

Welcome to the world of saltwater. If there are microbubbles in your tank, try to adjust the skimmer so that less bubbles are produces. I know some smaller skimmer allow this. If your nitrates and ammonia are high, I would do a water change soon. You'll learn that this is the one huge difference between freshwater and saltwater....if you want to be successful in saltwater you have to be very consistent with you water changes. You also need to get a RO/DI filter to filter the tap water before you put it in your tank. This is the first thing that anyone getting into the hobby should get. I wished someone had told me this in the beginning, it would've save me alot of trouble. You also need to make sure you have a deep sand bed to help with filtration also. There is so much more I could tell, but you simply need to search through this site and spend some time reading. I would also say that you need to become a member. You will make up that $20 in your first week, I guarantee it. The knowledge that you can gain from members here is well worth the money, not to mention having access to people selling used equipment and frags. I made my money back the first couple days. now go and read read read read read read read read read read read read

I never knew that about the fans helping to keep the PAR higher with T5s. Now I know why aquactinics put them in there. Sweet.

Scales Tropical Fish Warehouse might be a new gem in MD
jamesbuf replied to NightOwl's topic in Vendor Experience
I can't agree more. I really like that store. Its becoming my favorite store here in MD. Great prices, that many times beat internet prices. Pearly Jawfish for $15.....nice. Plus they found the nicest canopy I could've asked for at an incredible price. Beat the other local MD stores by over $250. I'm definitly supporting them because I want them to be around for some time. -
One of the funniest posts I've seen on here in a while. Charlie, I thought your controller you just got had a pH controller on it? Or does it just have the monitor?

So correct me if I'm wrong. Is the Mag 24 essentially going to be a closed loop system, with the 2 1.5" bulkheads drainging directly into the mag 24 which would then send the water back directly into the tank? If this is the case, you need to filter the water that goes through the SQWDs, because from what I've read, the SQWDs last much longer if you mechanically filter the water before you send it through them and that they get gunked up pretty quick if you don't. Also, the Mag 24 pumps out some heat which might end up being a problem down the road. Especially if you also have 2 more Mag 7s running. Just something to think about.

I've been waiting to find a used one on here, but I think it might be time to just buy a new one. Since I keep reading about people having to clean their probes and eventually replacing them, I'm curious to know why no one uses the handheld units like this one http://www.thatpetplace.com/Products/KW/F5...9/Itemdy00.aspx Am I wrong in thinking that since it doesn't hang in the tank 24/7, there'll be less long term problems? I understand that it doesn't provide constant montioring, but are they any other drawbacks to these kind. Also, if anyone else has experience with another brand, please let me know. Thanks.

Thanks David. I told you I would give your tank a good home. How do you like the canopy by the way? It matched pretty well I have to say. Thanks to Scales and Andrew for coming through for me. Split top canopy with 4 opening doors on the front. Great price too.

There are actually close to 50 frags spaced out over tank. You can't see them because they are all just that, small frags. I'm glad I got pics now so in a few months I'll be able to have something to compare my growth to.

Go to the auction listings and you'll see a Vendor member named "johhnybv". He's the owner of BRK and the hours and link to there website is listed at the bottom of his posts.

I would starve the tank for a day. Then try to add a flake or two of food at a time (I use the thick tetra-crisp flakes so it was easy to add one at a time). Wait for the damsel to dart upwards to take the food then take a swipe with your net. This is how I caught both my striped damsels. I actually caught both in the same swipe since I had a large net. Felt so good afterwards I had to have a beer. Simple victories in life should also be rewarded Best of luck

So I got my canopy this weekend and my lights are now raised 8" off the tank. Raising the lights got rid of the dark spots I had complained about. Chris (cbashaw) came by today and took pics for me since my camera sucks. Here are a few of them. My Riteri My huge frogspawn Full views RBTA with GBmaroon clown peeking out. There is a recovering Long tentacle Anemone to the left. Some other randoms More to come once they're loaded. I've got over 40 frags in there now. Can't wait for a few months to pass and see some good growth.

Blue Ribbon Koi. Its one of the best LFS in the area.

not always. I've got a coral beauty and a flame angel and niether of them bother any of the corals...(knock on wood). From what I've read on here an other sites, dwarf angels are usually reef safe, but you do come across one that may nip on corals every now and then. I know someone on here unfortunately ran into a flame that had started to nip at corals. Chris, if you do plan on getting the anthias, why don't you start a group buy from that nyaquatics place. They have the cheapest prices I've seen by far. I know everyone was more than happy with their order they got last time. Very healthy and decent size. Count me in on the group buy if you start one. After seeing my tank, you thinking you need for fish eh? I think I have room for a couple more fish.

Very nice. Was that from Dr. Mac?? What else did you pick up while you were there? I have a feeling you have more pics to show in the future.
