  1. Read this: http://www.wamas.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=10868 Dave
  2. Image seems too small to diagnosis anything. Dave
  3. Some type of calcerous algae. Dave
  4. Sounds like feather dusters... or some other type of caclerous tube building worm. Dave
  5. Think I can keep my wife from noticing the upgrade from the 180? Dave
  6. BUT Maybe not the best color... and maybe too much light (a lot of variables) including what types of corals. Dave
  7. I have to admit I used to not be religous about this, but after all the stories now I am... There are some fish I would consider not quaranteeing though: Scooter Blennies Mandarins Dave
  8. Many fish actually give off a film as well as a natural thing to ward of predators... What kind of fish, and is it constantly there or only after stress, or after first waking up in the AM? Dave
  9. Yeah the little check valve thing really makes it work much better (it was going to be my suggestion to you). Dave
  10. It's got at least 3 mouths... I'll get a recent picture to show where I would like to frag. Dave
  11. Dave.... I want to be reasonable sure... I took this coral from this: To And that was 4 months ago Dave
  12. Ok I feel like I'm pretty much an expert on most fragging techniques out there, and can frag all my LPS, Softies, SPS, zoos, anemones, shrooms and the like, but there is one coral I have never tried, and mine is getting big.... My bubble coral. I'm interested if anyone has any experience fragging one of these beautiful creatures... exerience, and other info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Dave
  13. Calibrate your probe... use a test kit to verify. Dave
  14. Testing the pH of tank water after it has been outside of the tank any period of time is a waste of time. Reason is there is a shifting of CO2 concentration as time goes on causing the pH to shift. Dave
  15. Lot's of things can interfere with it....also is the probe that was calibrated with the same one it shipped with. Regardless I believe there is an offset you can set.... Temp is a weird thing we really have no way to calibrate... So I took 3-4 different types of thermometers and calibrated to the average. Dave
  16. I too will stick to salifert... I also used the lamont, but the expense/test is way out of wack for the amount that I test... I will keep the one, and use it on ocassion, but I can't see it being my everyday test kit. I also got a tunze test kit... haven't even opened it yet, but I'm curious. Dave
  17. Well yes that is what I do.... if everything looks good test kit wise though the next question is why... I will typically do an independent test (other test kit, and/or other person + their test kit). Dave
  18. Again... DONT RELY ON TEST KITS!!! Look at your tank, know what a healthy coral looks like, know what a stressed coral looks like. I like test kits because I think stable parameters are important, BUT I also know when my corals/animals are looking stressed and I start to look for problems at that point... Dave
  19. THis is why it's important to look closely at your tank and inhabitants (it's what tipped me off and made me get another test kit for comparision. Do NOT RELY ON TEST KITS ALONE! Dave
  20. Bob, I know belive I had the same thing, BUT I'm not convinced it was a faulty test kit.... I have reason to belive the new style drippers are not as accurate when the bottles get lower.... (In the begining I was testing close to an older Salifert test kit, but in the last 2 weeks I compared again and I was of by 2.0 dkH (pretty signifigant)... I noticed that the amount blue fluid that was coming out seemed much smaller in the new test kit than the old, also did a change of the blue bottles vs the other, and guess what it was consistant with the blue bottle. That's not to say they have a problem, but it may be more than just reagents. Dave (who now has 4 Alk test kits )
  21. You can also get a device that is a paint scraper (assuming you have glass) it's about 6" wide and is effectively a stout razor blade... That will probably help. Dave
  22. This kind of stuff is really sucky, which is why quaranteen is a VERY VERY good idea. Hoepfully it won't cause you to bail, but I totally understand. Dave
  23. There should be (at least there is with the III) a statment: If ALM THEN <do something like turn a plug off> But I don't know of a way to go from there to telling another unit something. Dave
  24. Only the unit itself will know if there is a power failure... there is no communication from a dc8/dc4 back to ANY of the control units... So if a circut trips where your dc4 is plugged in the controller unit will know nothing about it. The best way to go is an AC III or an AC III pro for email notifications. The expansions are great and bascially give you the ability to monitor parameters and a 2nd location (I have one on my 40 gallon frag... and a 2nd one as a redundancy on my main tank as well). Dave
  25. Well I definitly deposited the check, but knew nothing of the $20 at the door of the meeting. Regardless as an educator your dues are only $10. Send me a PM with an address and I'll send you a check for $30. Sorry for the confusion. Dave
