  1. Definitely go for the p38 bulb if you're keeping it cheap. I use several kingbo bulbs over both of my tanks with great results. Sent from my Pixel 3 XL using Tapatalk
  2. Fun idea, Alan. So you don't have any other tank set up right now? I'm surprised! Sent from my Pixel 3 XL using Tapatalk
  3. No kidding! I thought what an adorable little fish. My colonies are established right? Hahahaha no. I think all he literally ate was coral. Oh and to crown all, that was the second one I got. The first one was really cute and just sat in my leather, and then I saw that they were able to change sexes either way to mate, and I got another so they could be a pair. The second one killed the first and went on a darn rampage. Plus a bunch of jumpers. Sent from my Pixel 3 XL using Tapatalk
  4. I'm so sorry to hear that. Reefing while homeschooling and working is no joke. I'm so sorry to hear of your losses. Things really do snowball. I lost most of my acropora after adding a yellow clown goby :( and now have cyano bc of few water changes after having the new baby. Hugs to you.
  5. Disappointed in the quality of the talks so far. The rock flower was good, Sanjay was ok but not great, the women in reefing was great, but ran so late. Then the first talk Saturday was awful-monotone and just presenting her paper which is not enough in a talk, the veterinarian was great, and Mr Saltwater unfortunately I found very, very boring. The Hawaii panel decent but could have been more exciting. It baffles me how speakers are not better vetted for being good speakers before they present, especially at such a limited conference where you can't escape to the show floor or really talk to others. I encourage anyone who is going to give a talk to read "don't be such a scientist" about science communication and to try to communicate their story compellingly, and don't just read your slides. This is a long time pet peeve of mine, having been to countless scientific talks and conferences during my time at Smithsonian. Science communication needs to be vibrant, interesting and on point. Here's my blog rant on this from years ago. https://treesneedroots.wordpress.com/2012/11/08/ohacademics/ And this wonderful rant here: Lehr, Jay H. “Let There Be Stoning!” Ground Water 23, no. 2 (1985): 162–165. "Let there be an end to incredibly boring speakers! They are not sophisticated, erudite scientists speaking above our intellectual capability; they are arrogant, thoughtless individuals who insult our very presence by their lack of concern for our desire to benefit from a meeting which we chose to attend. We attempt to achieve excellence of written presentation in our journals. We can require no less in our conferences. It is an honor to be accepted as a speaker who will spend the valuable time of hundreds of scientists at a conference. Failure to spend this time wisely and well, failure to educate, entertain, elucidate, enlighten, and most important of all, failure to maintain attention and interest should be punishable by stoning. There is no excuse for such tedium, so why not exact the ultimate penalty?" Sent from my Pixel 3 XL using Tapatalk
  6. Thank Alan. Really cool about the anemones and clown syncing. Sent from my Pixel 3 XL using Tapatalk
  7. So looks like I came in about halfway through the rock flower talk. Can you give me a short summary of what they talked about in the clownfish symbiosis talk that I missed? Do you know if this will be available later as a recording? Sent from my Pixel 3 XL using Tapatalk
  8. Thanks I had to search. My inbox is a mess. I've been prepping for homeschooling and forgot all about it being this weekend already! Thank you so much for posting this reminder!! Sent from my Pixel 3 XL using Tapatalk
  9. Shoot!! Thanks for reminder. I'm supposed to be watching this. Can you link me? I registered Sent from my Pixel 3 XL using Tapatalk
  10. https://www.smithsonianmag.com/science-nature/stressed-corals-dim-then-glow-brightly-before-they-die-2197598/ This is an older article but I thought very interesting. Sent from my Pixel 3 XL using Tapatalk
  11. Update: I've caught the goby! Now who wants him? Sent from my Pixel 3 XL using Tapatalk
  12. No worries. I'll probably just have to take everything out Sent from my Pixel 3 XL using Tapatalk
  13. That's very nice. I'm in Kensington/Rockville, MD. I do not have a trap. I'm just not sure this little idiot will even use one, since it doesn't seem interested in eating anything but sps. I did try making my own with a bottle and plastic baggie baffle with sps inside but it didn't seem interested and I was worried leaving it too long might kill the sps from lack of flow. 14. This goby is prolific. They do actually eat polyp's slime and irritate it enough to kill it. It ate the entire red robin, not due to egg laying, and it's gotten a good start on several others. It's new to the tank. The really horrible part is, is that this is the second goby. I got it to potentially mate with the other, and it killed the other one that was perfectly happy to live in my big leather coral doing no harm. :(
  15. I think I'm going to have to take everything out of my tank to get this guy. It's killed 2 acropora and looks like it's starting on two more. Any suggestions?? Other than believe the darn spec sheet on the species when it says they can cause considerable damage to "smaller colonies" and don't buy one. Sent from my Pixel 3 XL using Tapatalk
  16. Tropical lagoon has several medicated tanks with copper as I recall, and then the ones on either ends with inverts and corals are not medicated. They are honest with you when you ask about if a fish is not ready to go home. I tend to try to pick from the unmedicated tank but I've seen very good specimens in the other tanks as well. 17. I use P38 bulbs from Amazon https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B01M0PF72P/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_Drm6EbDRXDKWM
  18. Yes huge problem with pH and general oxygenation. Secure the blinds instead. I couldn't figure out why my pH was so low until I tried Randy's trick for oxygenating my tank water in a sample outside and the pH rose immediately. Most houses are way too tight with gas exchange. The only thing that helped was having windows open WITH fan in window blowing in fresh air. But you can't always do that.
  19. How terribly sad. We were so lucky to have him visit WAMAS. My heart goes out to his family. He was clearly a very special person. So kind. Sent from my Pixel 3 XL using Tapatalk
  20. Definitely slow it down. I also prefer the side by side.
  21. Thanks! It is on casters. We cut the panels to size. Sent from my Pixel 3 XL using Tapatalk
  22. Well... I finally got the 75g from Petco. I've been meaning to expand for the carpets for quite some time, but they were doing well in the meantime. The clowns are still too domesticated to realize they live in anemones and decided instead to live in a hole in the sand near the pistol shrimp, and occasionally under a rock ledge. Let's hope they figure it out one day. Here's some pictures of what the little tank looked like plus in progress of the stand for the 75, and CMAS frag fest, where I was lucky enough to get the highest bid on the lobo pictured. There's also a picture of my 40g main tank crowded with coral post sale. Finally the 75 gallon set up, which combined my 20g, and 10g holding tank for a starry blenny and Talbot's damsel. I'm really proud of my husband's work on the stand and my idea for it, which was to use IKEA panels to face the stand to give it a modern look. We got them all from the markdown section for quite a deal. The doors are attached with piano hinges. The lights are on a temporary mounting, which eventually might be a hood... We use par38 bulbs and have had great luck with coral growth on the 40g. Sent from my Pixel 3 XL using Tapatalk

  24. Oh man, I'm so sorry to hear this Milton! I wish this stupid virus wasn't happening so you could get better help. Let me know if I can do anything. Sent from my Pixel 3 XL using Tapatalk
  25. Yikes, that salinity crash is enough to give someone a heart attack. I hope your friend will be ok. Depression is very hard during this isolation. It's much warmer here in MD and going for walks has helped me. I also had some fun tank times today when literally the moment I had the new bigger tank ready for my evansi anthias, it died. Swam into the carpet? Finally died because it hates food and it's friend jumped out weeks ago? It ate, but it came to me really underfed. I bought it a whole Mandarin feeding kit and frozen cyclops etc. So no idea. Maybe it was the pistol shrimp. He's always shooting off his pops in there. #darnit I'm just glad I found it in the tank or I would have thought it jumped and the cat ate it. Now that's some fancy feast.
