  1. I have a red monti that grew around a couple of these in my tank. They do sting the monti and cause is to turn white/deteriorate. I think you can pop them off with a screw driver or something strong like that.
  2. I run 3 x 250 and 2 x 150 over my 180. I use and 5 dollar fan and no heaters or chillers. Tank stays between 78-81. Try the fan method first!
  3. Great thanks for the info! I ended up fabricating a feeder out of some little PVC parts and the grate like piece used for dursos to keep out large stuff from entering the drain. It works pretty well. Only the copperband and some starfish go after it. It does need some perfecting but it's keeping him away from my acans for now.
  4. Done. Great pic!
  5. Has anyone used window tint on the back of their tank? What are the benefits of this? Sounds interesting.
  6. Awesome, thanks for the replies.
  7. This a great idea. Make sure you leave room for your corals to grow.
  8. I was feeling risky the other day and picked up a copperbanded butterfly. He was bullied a little at first but now he fits right in. The problem is that the only coral he picks at is my prized acan colony. So I decided to rubberband a razor clam to a rock and toss it in. The butterfly loves razor clams! And so do the other 10 fish/eel. The other fish are bigger and stronger and were soon ripping the clam to pieces and not allowing the butterfly to get any. He's pretty timid. When there is a clam in my tank, the butterfly doesn't bother the acans. To solve this problem, I'm thinking about making a "hummingbird" type of contraption so that only the copperband can access the food with his long nose. I'm considering taking a piece of pvc (with a cap on the end) and drilling small holes in it. Then I can place the food in the pvc pipe and bury the open end in the sand. This will allow him to slowly pick at the razor clam and will hopefully keep the big tangs out. Has anyone else had a similar experience and solved the problem? (without getting rid of the fish that is)
  9. I would of leveled the stand/tank BEFORE filling it with water.
  10. I am trying the mag float idea tonight! It's things like this that make me love this club!
  11. I had to run to work and wasn't able to check. I have a 1.5-2 inch sand bed and the tank/sand has only been up and running for a few months. So I'm guessing I'll be alright.
  12. I knocked off the magnet while cleaning the glass last night....epic fail. Thanks for the responses though!
  13. I woke up this morning to find my hydor magnum 8 on the bottom of the tank and sand EVERYWHERE. Several corals were buried but I dug them out and they all look OK. I thought the suction cups on these powerheads were pretty strong? Did I not have it stuck on the glass correctly or is there a trick to this? Is there a fail safe plan in case this happens again?
  14. Emphasis on beer.
  15. I bought a guys setup a while back and the hammerhead came with it. Never thought to use to it until the other day and.....holy crap! This thing is awesome!
  16. I have had my 180 up and running for a few months now. I have a hippo, a yellow, a unicorn, a sailfin, mandarin, flame angel and a few small fish. The rock work is very low key and there is plenty of room for the fish to swim and be happy. I would estimate about 2/3 of the total volume of the tank is open for swimming, and there are several caves and hiding spots as well. The tank is located in a separate room that is only trafficked when someone is looking at the tank or doing maintenance. Here's the problem. Whenever I enter the room, I almost always find a group of 6-7 fish hovering in the front corner. I want these fish to be happy and zooming back and forth! Are they just waiting for food and stop when I walk in? I'm starting to wish I had put the tank in a common area. Any thoughts?
  17. My roomate and I may be able to help on Saturday at 10. I can tell you for sure tomorrow. Coming from Kent Island.
  18. Fantastic advice. Ever feel like you "learn the hard way" every time? I do!!!
  19. Just stopped by and saw these guys. There is a pair of them and are selling for 45 each. 1.5-2 inches. Great deal!
  20. Has anyone been to this store lately? Has it gotten any better? Thinking about stopping in this weekend.

  22. From the album: Our Reef Pics

Took two looonggg months but I finally have my 180 up and running. Now for the endless amount of "finishing touches". This hobby is exhausting
  23. I know for a fact that the fish were picked up at BWI around 1 and dumped into the tank in Annapolis at 6. (buddy was at the cargo pickup and met the guy getting the fish for Tanked) Judging from the amount of fish I saw in the tank the other day compared to how many there were at the taping of the show, I'd estimate that about 50-60% died. Maybe these guys will be donating some of that cash to some "save the reef" foundation pretty soon...
