  1. I also use RC and i've never seen the elevated alk you should see from RC...been considering switching to IO since the elevated levels dont really help me too much. I would test before and after your WC and the new water of course and then come back here with the results. Dosing is not as scary as you may think and the amounts we are gonna guide you through will not harm anything. Heres what I did... The usual recommendation is to not change more than 1.4dkh / day. With that in mind, you go to the calculator and tell it to raise you 1dkh. Split that dose in 2 (am/pm) . Test the next day. Your alk should be higher but not at the +1. Whatever the difference is will be your next days dosage. So let's say you were +.7. Then calculate how much to dose to get you up another 1dkh +.3 the next day. Keep doing this until you reach your target alk. The difference between the measurement you should be getting and what you are getting is your consumption. You can now drop to just that "extra" amount and you should be pretty stable. You may have to tweak it a few times once you get it locked in because your growth will most definitely increase. I did stop dosing once I was stable and went a week without to "verify" the consumption, but in hindsight it was completely unnecessary. Overall, its really not as hard/difficult as it seems and don't worry you've got great support here
  2. I was in a similar boat. After I hit the one year mark alk started dropping and WC was not keeping up. I did exactly what you proposed. Dosed alk slowly to get back to >7dkh calcium remained stable. Once i was testing and dosing consistently for a while I let the reefangel take over. Now I test once a week or so if i remember just to make sure things are still inline.
  3. Awesome. I'm really glad to have you joining up
  4. I would not rely on one day of consumption for calcium. The margin of error is too high. It seems odd that the dosage amounts are so far apart. Focus on alk dosing till your daily usage remains constant. I would check the calcium over a few days at least. It should not be changing. 1dkh = 20ppm but your test says alk isnt that low. Either way won't hurt as long as you testing regularly.
  5. I don't think anyone's stepped up to the plate yet. Afaik the offer still stands. A lot of the ground work has been done. Come on, dive in
  6. 2 part is the basic first step in dosing. This link is very helpful in figuring out amounts to dose http://reef.diesyst.com/chemcalc/chemcalc.html
  7. I am very happy with mine so far. Very consistent and no issues
  8. When Water changes are no longer maintaining your parameters and/or your parameters are fluctuating more than you'd like. With three spa frags you've got some time.
  9. Apparently, I'm a sucker for an April Fool's joke... but seriously why not?
  10. And now sumps!!! http://reefbuilders.com/2014/04/01/nextreef-experiements-3d-printed-sumps/
  11. http://reefbuilders.com/2014/03/31/diy-3d-printed-protein-skimmer/ Ok, this is pretty cool. This is one of the reasons I'm convinced that 3d printing has a huge potential. I would love to see real community developed things like this especially that can adapt something as simple as a 2L soda bottle into a pretty cool protein skimmer. Imagine if we had plans online for media reactors, calcium reactors, other parts (barb fittings, etc) that you could easily get access to and start building at will. Anyway, thought the DIY minded crew here would enjoy...
  12. You wont regret using eztube.com great company to work for and quality product!
  13. You should be able to..theres a lot of unclaimed goodies
  14. Wow on b1 if you have more of that you can bring to the MR swap, I'd like
  15. Yeah the deal is geared more to reefers who'd like an awesome controller for someone who could help make an awesome app!
  16. Thats right, FREE!!! With a small catch of course... The ReefAngel developer who is currently trying his best to support and develop the iOS App for the ReefAngel is looking for help in getting the app feature complete. For your experienced iOS knowledge and skills you could earn yourself a free controller and contribute to a great open source community. Please check out this thread if you have the time, knowledge and commitment to help us complete this critical project! http://forum.reefangel.com/viewtopic.php?t=4464
  17. Very nice and simple solution. Could easily be sized larger if need be (1L or 2L bottles..) I love it! Elegant in its simplicity!!

The conference was great, very well run. Everything went very smooth. There were around 20 vendors there. I missed Julien Sprung and Charles Delbeek but the talk by Andrew Rhyne was great. I got some great pieces of Marco rock to fill in some gaps in my tank. They were there with a huge display of regular and shelf rock. I got an awesome deal on a JF jack o' lantern lepto and a nice frag of JF tricolor acro from Dan Rigle and a 3p frag of Golden Mauls from R&R Aquatics All that plus a good time seeing the aquarium. Finally saw the sea lion show, penguins and sea otters. Last time I was there it was too cold to see the outdoor exhibits. I hope next time some of you can make it! May 4th is the Manhattan Reef Frag Swap
  19. I'm not interested in a purchase now but if I ever go with a co2 reactor I would definitely be interested in this build!!
  20. Hehe i saw it on my Facebook feed...i said to myself..i know that tank
