Who is good with Apex connection setup to Internet?
AlanM replied to NAGA's topic in General Discussion
Sounds like every visit to my inlaws house. -
Ok. Must be different for yours, I would think, because my power supply actually drives the peristaltic pump which apparently requires a starting capacitor to get its initial kick. If yours just trips a relay on a different pump it must be a different issue. Did you get a separate power supply with yours?

Ah, you don't have the deluxe one? OK

I agree with Tom. It tends to be really ISP and router specific to get the port forwarding set up on the router, then the dynamic IP address issue with no-ip.org or something like that (I ended up creating a paid account with them), then the email SMTP configuration for warning emails. Then make sure you have a UPS on both the Apex and the router or else those emails won't get out in power outages. Then I still can't get the Android app to work worth a crap. The iOS works great on local wireless or anywhere over Verizon LTE cellular. -
Rats, no I don't. I am kind of picturing a little white box, but can't be 100% sure. It's gone by now. I bought it during the thanksgiving sale, when you guys had an sitebuster deal on them. 30% off, I think. It ended up needing to be back-ordered and came separately from the rest of the stuff I bought which was skimmer, locker, swabbie, and MR5. I posted a "Look at all this stuff thread" here with a picture of the original box opened up: http://wamas.org/forums/topic/53936-got-a-big-pile-of-stuff/ But the ATO wasn't in it. It shipped later on Dec 19.

Well, if you still have old ones around you can put an Avast sticker on them and sell them for a few bucks each to Apex users to use to power the base unit as an outage detection mechanism. The plug looks the same to me. My options were buying one with that plug configuration from china for $3 with free 3 week shipping or $16 from Neptune Systems or buying some crazy big one from radio shack for $25. The new Apex firmware lets you do the following to some outlets on the EB8: If Power Apex Off 000 then Off which detects if the 12V plugged into the wall goes off. Then you can put the EB8 onto a UPS and have some ports stay on if the 12V drops. I sent you an email. Looks like howaboutme has the same issue with his. I bet he has the same power supply. I don't know his contact info outside of WAMAS.

I hope I didnt accidentally switch power supplies with cheap ebay one I bought for my apex, but I dont think I did. Here is the pic of my power supply. Sounds like it's all Tom's fault after all if he specced it out.

Broken Center brace suggestions for school tank
AlanM replied to dbartco's topic in General Discussion
I was told on RC that it would not work to adhere ABS to acrylic (which I think is PMMA). I used Loctite epoxy plastic bonder for some pieces I did in my overflow and it seems to hold really hard. I tried to remove it and wasn't able to. I think it's just epoxy with a few solvents in it that do some plastic dissolving. I couldn't find info that said it was reef-safe, but it didn't have any metals in it so it doesn't seem like it is a big deal. -
Hang hood and all from the ceiling with toggle bolts on pulleys and use a winch to raise the whole thing when needed. Take the hinges out of the hood, attach the two halves together with hinges and use a hole-saw to make fan holes out the top.

I hope they do love it because I tried out GFO a few days ago and ended up with rust fines all over the tank even after rinsing it before putting it in. My powerheads turned orange even though I couldn't see the rust going in there, heh.

Thanks. I'll wait to hear before I open up the box and see if I can see what it does that's different from the pressure switch on the skimmate locker.
-
Just think, you can check your pH and temp from a tailgate party with your phone. 8)

Thanks. I did it for the experience of diy partially, but also because I wanted things that I didnt think commercial lights had. I hadnt heard that anyone was doing custom lights like he does as a going concern. His stuff is really nice looking and I like his rectangular "pucks" of emitters.

I've liked the minwax poly and have gotten really good results over an oil based stain. I tried the "Polyshades" once as a shortcut to separate stain then poly, but it was basically paint and left big brush marks with the stain in it. It didn't penetrate to bring out any grain and seemed to offgas piles of solvent for weeks. We could smell it for a long time. Have you ever tried that stuff?

Here is what it does. You can see that it is running, I pull the plug, it stops, I put the plug back in without moving the sensor, it stays off, I push the sensor down until something clicks and pull it back to the same spot, and then it runs. Maybe I will open a support ticket with them from their website cause I dont think they read these board that often.
-
So it does the same thing if I pull the wall wart that powers it off and plug it back in. If I do that it will never activate unless I submerge the sensor and then pull it back out. Making a video now.

It was skimming yellow goo, but the level dropped way down when I put the old rowaphos into the sump. Not sure why. I am keeping my hands off the valves to see if it comes back rather than risk overflows
-
I always assumed it might be people chasing at shadows around their tank parameters, but now Ive seen it happen.
-
Yes, it's a relay controlled one. Supposedly the very low draw devices like peristaltic pumps and Swabbie are supposed to go on the relay ones and not the triac ones. I haven't tried it on a triac yet.
-
The pH is such a weird thing. I put some very old Rowaphos in a reactor last night to try to get down my 1ppm PO4. I ran it into a bucket at first to get most of the rust out and then ran it into the sump like normal. It isn't making a difference so far on my PO4. Probably because it's so old and kind of dried out. The skimmer head dropped way down, the pH initially dropped and now it's climbing way up. We have the windows all open today. I had a hard time believing that fresh air made that much of a difference. Does it really?

Have you ever been on a dive to see a shipwreck to see if the critters specifically don't like to live on the copper/brass parts of the ship as opposed to the steel parts? Once I started learning how bad copper and zinc are for marine invertebrates I keep trying to watch for it on nature shows.
-
It has really good contact to outlet 8 on the EB8. I never unplug it. I just move the sensor down and up to get it to work again. The issue isn't with electrical supply. Maybe I should take a video or something to show the ATO not running with the sensor completely out of the water.

How does everyone know Dave from nanoboxreef and know that I'm doing a DIY LED setup and they don't tell me about him? Also, no one told me about Bacon Biter's Coralux Storm X until I saw Brad posting it and his nanoboxreef light. I totally would have done that for my light controller and still may sell my VDM and do that one when I'm allowed to spend money again.

I don't mind the water sound, but the Deluxe ATO has a peristaltic pump on it that is kind of loud when it runs. My sump is in the basement which should be quiet enough, except for the fact that previous owners installed a laundry chute in the master bedroom which drops right into the washing machine. It's cute that it works like that, but the ATO sound kind of travels up the laundry chute. I haven't opened up the Deluxe ATO to see what's in there, but there must be a bit more logic than just the pressure switch, because when the switch is closed (out of the water) and the power is supplied it doesn't turn on until I open and close the switch again.
