bio balls, interesting. i was thinking about going away from gfo by switching to biopellets and algae scrubber. didnt even think of using bio balls. lett me know how that works out.
if it is an established tank, i would look into changing the gfo, either brand or amount used, or look into a algae scrubber. algae scrubbers seems to work a lot better than chaeto.
sorry for your loss. always a good idea to get a buddy who is also into the hobby to maintain the tank while you are away for long periods. maybe investing in a ato would have helped in this situation in the future and a controller that will warn you if something is off with your readings. i would use the zoas again as well as the rocks. not sure if the bacteria on the rocks would survive something like this, but at least you are aptasia free.
what are you feeding and how much are you feeding for each feeding? a lot of people prefer more smaller feedings than large feedings once every 1-3 days. i agree that you may need to do more water changes. once every other week works for many people.
you can try it and let us know how it went. i would probably keep a few in brakish water and make their fry full saltwater if they are not to be used as a food source, but that may take a couple of months to accomplish.
it would work if you bought brakish water raised guppies, the problem is the ones that you normally find in the fish stores are typically fresh water raised which makes the transition a little tough.
are you planning on breeding them to be used as a food source? even if they were able to survive being in saltwater, they probably will live a short life.
hawaii local forums. smaller sized ones. large ones were 5 for a dollar. the guy got them from the waters in hawaii and said they were saltwater. i will ping him to see if he knows the salt level.
this is what i really want, but it requires two outlets. just looking for alternatives that will require 1 outlet with the equipment already in use in my system. http://www.santa-monica.cc/Hang-On-Glass-HOG-Upflow-Algae-Scrubber-UAS--05-Cubes-feeding-per-day--MAGNET-VERSION_p_21.html
so looking at some examples of diy upflow algae scrubbers from http://www.reefs.org/forums/topic147470-40.html . i was wondering if i can just put a screen in the skimmer which already have bubbles and add a light. i know most people run either the skimmer or the scrubber, but i plan to run both just to be on the safe side.
reefbuilder had some information on this. anyone have experience with them or know more info on them? not sure if they would be a benefit in our small aquariums compared to the wild.e. http://reefbuilders.com/2013/02/06/coral-crabs-aid-ailing-corals-combat-disease/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+reefbuilders%2FCTjt+%28Reef+Builders%29
