  1. YOU ARE DEAD WRONG ON THE MERCHANT AND OUT OF LINE WITH THE SUGGESTION! You owe that merchant you listed with your link an apology. I never "blasted" anyone on the net and did not name any store by name and will not do so. The only person doing any "blasting" and WAY OUT OF LINE in my opinion here is you. My intent was simply to share and remind all of us to be aware.
  2. I have not bothered to call the store yet and it is certainly not a priority issue for me. I certainly don't think it was intentional, and I hold myself accountable for letting it happen. I'm sure it will be resolved, but I wanted to share as a way of reminding all of us to pay attention. It doesn't matter where they were purchased, because this could have happened anywhere. I will admit that I expect some of this when ordering online, but not at my LFS. Lesson learned for me.
  3. I want to share with you my bad experience as a matter of lesson learned and ask that you please not ask me the name of the LFS. I bought 10 Trochus snails today and while the store employee was bagging them up I looked around the rest of the store. I paid for these without question or examination along with a few other dry good items. When I got home I placed the bag in my quarantine tank to get ready to acclimate the new snails when I noticed that one of the snails was completely outside of the shell. I took a photo of this to share with you. I opened the bag and nearly vomited at the smell that poured out of the bag. I did not bother to acclimate the living snails as this water was so wretched that I immediately put them into quarantine without acclimation. Not only was there a rotting dead snail in there, but a completely empty shell that I paid I think $2.49 + tax for! My fish room smelled so bad that I had to mix up some Revive to freshen up the place. That was a foul smell that I do not understand how that was not noticed. Whose fault was this? Mine! I know better, but figured that it was just snails, and I have never had this experience before. Learn from my foolish mistake, and examine your items before you bring them home. I will admit that it is hard to look closely at 10 snails in a bag, but I was foolish for not paying better attention. I hope the stores response to this will not disappoint me.
  4. This is from my submariner engineer friend. He indicated that this is not an easy solve and that there would be significant calculus behind the answer. More that I want to take in right now, but maybe these links will help. 5. I have a friend (also a reefer) that is an engineering officer on a submarine that I will forward this to. He loves this sort of stuff. JR
  6. The problem with the "study" (as I recall it and to be fair I did not read it again) and a bit of a surprise to see the conclusions from a "scientist" is that there was not a control. It was merely an observation. This does not mean that it is not a valid conclusion, just that it does not appear to allow for valid scientific conclusion.
  7. i just re-read the post and should clarify that I have the entire bulkhead1" inner diameter and 1 1/4" outer diameter. The gasket outer diameter is 2". Not sure if that is what you are looking for or not.
  8. I have one that is threaded if you want to drive to Olney to pick it up.
  9. I went to the following stores today with no luck. Aquarium One, Tropical Lagoon, and Tropical Fish World. Aquarium One was all out and apparently you have to be there when the shipment comes in. It seems when I make it around to the LFS on the weekend everyone seems to be out.
  10. Not sure if this is the right place for this, but I'm looking for a LFS that has Trochus snails in stock. I know I can get these online, but I would prefer to send the business to the LFS. Has anyone seen any on their visits? I live in Olney so I hope to find some at one of the closer ones.
  11. Has your tank had a confirmed cycle? Did you see ammonia go up and then back down followed by a spike in Nitrites up and then down?
  12. There is no problem at all for off label use. The "label" is what the FDA is allowing the drug manufacturer to "advertise", "state", "market", etc. a particular drug. Not having FDA approval does not mean that it will not work or can not be used in that fashion, just that the manufacturer has not spent the cash to go through the FDA process for approval including clinical trials. A doctor that has the license to prescribe a drug can use it in any way he or she sees fit to treat his or her "patient of record". The doctor will be liable for malpractice if it is deemed that he or she caused harm and was negligent in their practice.
  13. Now I understand why Nate's setup has 3 per row instead of the 4 per row I was thinking of. I still like the design. Very nice.
  14. This brand was not purchased locally and was purchased before we moved here and I brought it with me. Your right, the MSDS does not tell you about trace impurities, but neither does most any bottle found in a pet store. As for solubility I have not noticed a residue and it claims to be 100% soluble. I think I paid about $10 for the bucket.
  15. For the last 2 and 1/2 years I have been supplementing my tank using a 2 part system with Arm and Hammer baking soda and Calcium Chloride Flake I get from a pool supply company. I know this will shock and terrify some of you to use anything that would come from a pool supply company in your reef tank while others will not blink. I assure you that I have had no problems and I stumbled onto this gem when adding Calcium to my pool a couple of years ago and realized that it looked just like Dow Flake. So, I looked for the MSDS to see what this actually was that was being added to my pool and I have been using it in my reef tank ever since. I will link the MSDS below. CaCL MSDS
  16. Reminds me of the tulip bulb mania in the Netherlands. In fact a lot of our hobby reminds me of this.
  17. When adding a grounding probe does it matter if the probe is in the sump or the display?
  18. I have found that a brush and latex paint works well. Flat or glossy it will look glossy on the glass when viewed through the tank. The spray is harder for me to control and gives no better results in my hands. The reason for this is that it will be viewed through a pane of glass and no matter how poor a painter you may be it always seems to look great. Have fun!
  19. I am not excited about the quality of these pictures, but I will post a few up of my current status. I have a microbubble problem that needs worked out and that is why the water has that look to it. The white on the far side is a frag rack in a temporary location. No rocks touching the back or side glass I still have some coral and on 6 line wrasse to move in to this tank from the holding tank in the basement. I'll get there eventually.
  20. Agreed. A tank this size shouldn't pose a problem.
  21. Your welcome. I hope one of those was bigger than what I saw there or it opens up more. If not, I'll get you another one if you want. JR
