  1. Well I would think thats probably because your pistol shrimp isn't trying to attack the skunk cleaner, whereas in the video I'm pretty sure it wanted the cleaner dead. I think the sound effect is like any other show on TV, its merely for entertainment, just like when someone punched it makes a loud noise that everyone recognizes as a punch, when in fact it never sounds like that.
  2. I check break.com all the time, I saw this video and thought I would share. Its a quick segment on pistol shrimp. http://www.break.com/index/oceans-number-one-bad-ass.html Who knew it briefly created the temperature of the sun.
  3. I got type II from home depot, average cost of rock per lb is like $0.97 including the aragonite. Only issues I'm running into now is we used a huge piece in the new tank and when we added salt we got TONS of reef snows due to the properties of the rock. I mean 1-2 inches of reef snow piling up that needs to be siphoned out. Its going to be a long cycle.
  4. The Aqua C remora PRO is up there in the HOB class, I had one on my 55g mix reef and I liked it once it got broken in. Definitely use a mag 3 or equivalent on it and cleaning the injector every month is key IME.
  5. It wasn't 94 pounds, however it was something like 40 pounds =( But its ok we've been using it to create rock structures and frag plugs. I'm pleased with the cost of materials for how much stuff we can make. Still cheaper than buying base rock.
  6. I think it was donated by fins and feathers but don't quote me on that. I know bulkreefsupply.com sells like 25 for 5 bucks. Or you can create your own (which I just did) using the techniques demonstrated at frag fest, its really really easy. Just get the concrete, 20 dollar bag of aragonite, mix to consistency, and cut a piece of pvc pipe, pack it in, pull it out of the pvc, and let it cure for 24 hours at least in the air and let it sit in water for a week.
  7. i sometimes forget to brush my teeth while looking at my fish tank too...
  8. Like Nemesiselite said (my brother) we started making the rock work for his 30 gallon yesterday, believe me its a learning curve, its simple yet tedious. To make the bonsai tree I would recommend starting out by making a foundation for the rocks, make it nice and wide, and while its wet stick a piece of pvc pipe in there. Now while experimenting yesterday I found a couple of ways that could work for attaching rock work. You could get a 3/4" PVC pipe, and get a straight PVC fitting that fits over the 3/4" pipe. Make your foundation, while wet stick the fitting into the cement (so its pretty flush with the rock) and let dry. Now make your flat piece of your bonsai tree, and stick the PVC pipe into the bottom side of it (make sure you have a little bit sticking out so you can attach to the fitting on the other rock) and let dry. The next day, stick them together and you just formed part of your bonsai tree. Now if you were doing a high branch, you could just use a long piece of pvc, let the pieces dry, then the next day coat the pvc with the cement rock combo until you're satisfied how it looks. If you don't understand this I don't blame you, I can draw pictures in MS Paint. If you're going to be starting up a new tank, why not just make your rock, let it dry 48 hours, put it in the tank you're going to cycle, and let it soak and cure while your cycle is going on. The PH isn't going to kill anything since you're cycling your tank without livestock anyways. Or, like you said you're going to be using a trash bin for a few months, this will be plenty of time to let the rock cure. Just treat the bin like your fish tank, put the rocks you want in there, buy some live rock and throw it in the water (the die off will kick off a cycle), buy pieces with coraline algae on it already and put a good light above the bin, and presto you just started a fish tank in a non-see through tank. Do a water change once a week for the first month to help get the nasty stuff left behind the DIY rock, and just let it marinate. When your ready to transfer it over, make sure you have water ready in your new tank and make sure the rocks are exposed to air as little as possible to help minimize die off.
  9. Well today was my brother and I's first meet. We usually just kind of post here and there and browse the forums several times a day. I must admit I was hesitant about going to the meet today but I really loved it, it turned out great and I met some new people and best of all I got to see things I wanted to learn about and get free frags =D Definitely thanks guys for putting this together and I really can't wait for the next one. Hopefully I will have more to contribute at the next meet.
  10. My biggest issue is size, performance, and cost. My octopus skimmer does ok but I really want a better skimmer. I also want a skimmer that will fit, but on top of that a skimmer that is quieter. My octopus is really loud and since I'm running it outside of the tank its even worse. I'm considering the asm but am open to other cost effective options. Really the thing I hate about the octopus skimmer is the noise right now.
  11. Hello. I currently have a pretty good skimmer, but I want a more powerful one without breaking the bank. I have a medium stocked 90g with a 30g sump, and I'm running an Octopus 150 recirculating needle wheel. One of my issues with this skimmer is it doesn't fit in my stand =/ So with that said the questions: The diameter of the skimmer is supposedly 5.5", could someone tell me how much more room you need for the pump? Does the skimmer operate on water level height? If so what height is that? What kind of loads do you have on this particular skimmer and what tank size? Any problems with it? How was the break in period? Any modifications to meet your liking? Do you recommend it? Do you recommend something else? I was considering looking into GSA skimmers as well but I have no idea where to find them since the website doesn't really work. Thanks.
  12. My brother and I will be there, I will hopefully be bringing a 10 gallon for whatever it can be used for. If you can drill it, cool, if not, someone can have a few 10 gallon tank =D Sorry no frags to offer =/
  13. Yea I've been contemplating ordering one online, but I'm scared =D I know its going to be pricey, but so worth it. If you happen to get one in shoot me a PM, don't go out of you way for me though I'm just in the market and looking around for now. Thanks.
  14. Hey johnny I was just wondering how much you could sell me a blue carpet anemone. If you can pick a size I would prefer smaller one, however I'll take what I can get. Thanks
  15. www.zoaid.com is what I use.
  16. I never knew we were supposed to get an actual card. I have no received mine yet and I registered earlier this year. I fear it may have been lost or sent to my previous address, I have since moved =( Can someone help me out here? (I'd like to have it for fragfest so I can prove I'm a member.)
  17. Sorry if this is a repost I have never heard of an upside down tank until I happen to see it on youtube. Pretty crazy, apparently there is a science to it, on top of maintaining a healthy reef.
  18. I'm not familiar with the skimmer but it sounds like a uniseal. In which case you can get them online, like at marinedepot or even bulkreefsupply I think, or locally I know blue ribbon koi has them.
  19. Thats a good point, never thought of that. But yea definitely get one of those airpumps, comes with a short amount of tubing so I would go ahead and order some airline tubing or go to walmart, you get like 10' for 5 bucks.
  20. Like bkl911 said, get that pump, I have it and it worked just fine when my power went out the other day. You just plug it into an outlet and turn the switch on (takes 2 D batteries), when the power is out, the pump activates, and your water will be aerated. When the power comes back on, it automatically turns off, and you didn't even have to lift a finger. The other option is if your in a bind (like the other night where your fish started to breath heavily), run to walmart, go to the sporting goods section by the fishing equipment, pick up an aerator. They are battery operated and made for live wells on boats. For that size of a tank and for it to be operating at full steam before the power outage, I wouldn't think your water would be o2 deprived already. I mean maybe I don't know what I'm talking about but fish travel in sealed bags for an excess of 24+ hours. Just my .02
  21. My brother and I will be there but I don't think we have any frags to offer =(
  22. Yea I've actually doubled my colony of tubbs blues under T5s in about a month and a half.
  23. Bummer. Well I guess I'll keep an eye out then. Thanks!
  24. Hey Johnny, how much would a pair of onyx run me. Doesn't matter specifics so long as they are some form of onyx. Thanks.
