  1. not sure how this skimmer is built, but I just put a valve on the end of my skimmer to make water pressure constant. I've attached a quick drawing of were I would typically see the valve.
  2. thin strands of cheato, I brought the rocks up from florida to show for evidence.
  3. I've had it when the cheato started dying but that was cause it had been in a jar in my car for 3 weeks. very strong stuff. Don't let it get caught in your rocks, I had to bake my rocks to get it out.
  4. It's good to hear your livestock is safe. Let me know if you ever need some extra hands, we can even kick back a few beers.
  5. Would be cool if we could use this to shine light into the tanks. Don't know if I'm l33t enough to try it. http://hackedgadgets.com/2008/12/06/sun-tr...into-your-home/
  6. yeah it's interesting cause, I've always been lead to believe fish couldn't see that spectrum of light.
  7. Found this on digg.com http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/20...html?source=rss would be kind of cool to have one of these little guys in the tank.
  8. glad to hear the storm is over, gratz on the save!
  9. The typical outcome is they die within a few months without proper feeding I stole this quote from another forum.
  10. I think the biggest lesson Florida could teach is have a army of power trucks with full crews waiting. Last time a hurricane came in the power company took over half the walmart parking lot and another half of another larger parking lot. They staged up ready to work after the hurricane passed. I'm not sure if it's a question of build, but more like man power.
  11. I can't catch shrimp for nothing, how did you get him in the first place?
  12. I loved my Pistol shrimp and yellow watchman combo in my old 29 gallon. Also a Pygmy Angel or Pink Skunk clowns might be nice. was my favorite fish.. or a Flame Angel would be cool. I had considered a nano seahorse tank as well.
  13. I had tube worms do that, boy it was a mess... had to run filter socks, carbon. Lost my cleaner shrimp but everything else made it out of the party. That's what I call.... a sticky situation
  14. well you did say he ate a lot, perhaps he had one too many happy meals? I'm just being funny. I've had a fish or two die on me without warning. I've always wondered if a book was out there on dissecting a fish to find cause of death.
  15. seems to me many times people end up having to mod their nano cubes. http://www.nanotuners.com/ has done some people right at www.nano-reef.com These guys will mod a cube to have MH. Nice neat package. worth the look. They also sell kits to do the modding yourself.
  16. I'd agree 2 Part was a good way to control your Calcum and Alk, this should keep your pH at normal levels. I'll usually use 2 part to get my tank where I want it. Then use Kalkwasser in my topoff to maintain the levels. After testing I'd determine how much of calcum and alk to reach my desired effect. This is a FANTASTIC calcuator for calcium and alk adjustments! It will tell you how much to dose, of course don't dump it in all at once. It even has explainations of what's going on with your tank chemistry wise. http://reef.diesyst.com/flashcalc/flashcalc.html You can even make your own 2 part, http://reefkeeping.com/issues/2006-02/rhf/index.php So I would say it is cheap, but takes a little on your part to make sure dosing is correct.
  17. Good to hear you have the situation under control. What caused the leak?
  18. Perhaps depending on the area, wild harvesting could be restricted at certain times of the year.
  19. I saw some guy a while back in my old reef club took a bucket out and pour some kind of acid in it and would drop pumps and such that need cleaning in it. after a while he would pull them out looking brand new. He poured some on cement and it stared to bubble up. anyone know what that stuff is called?
  20. besides that, have you looked for parasites? Redbugs got pretty violent with a friend of mines tank till he treated it. So yeah I'd start running large amounts of carbon just incase it some kind of toxin something let out when it died and water changes. Doing this saved me from RTN well I also dipped my corals in Lugols Solution. Hope you can figure out what's causing this or at least stop it by doing the water changes etc. I might be available Saturday night and definitely all day Sunday if you need some extra muscle.
  21. Sometimes ya got to step back and look at all the electrical wires going into a salt water tank and wonder if whoever put this together is suicidal. Then realize it was you that did it.
  22. Not sure I just kinda eyeball/winged it. when something like that happens, maybe dump 5 gallons and put 5 gallons of RO in. maybe in 1 gallon increments testing the water after it's had time to mix up. if it didn't do enough rinse and repeat.
  23. Block a burn nuke a reef? Go this one from digg.com, talks about how sunblock might need to stay out of the tank. Some chemical ingredients can effect zooxanthellae. I guess long as you don't touch the water with the sun tan lotion on things should be fine. on a side note does that tang look like it needs food or am I wrong?
