I wouldn't have nothing if I didn't have you! Thanks for selling me a frag - which also protects the coral by keeping it going in more than one system to prevent loss should a problem ever arise. No I just need to catch a yellow and send your way

Upgrading my 55 to a 125...thought?
Gatortailale replied to sturnmeyer's topic in General Discussion
So basically you want to put a 125 in same location as the 55? Basically you are going to have a new tank cycle which means you need to let it cycle for 3 plus weeks before moving over fish and other livestock - if you want the best for them. Depending on size of your fish, they should be fine in a few 30g tanks. Be Patient. Ecosystems do not develop over night! You can move the 55 to another location in your home and keep it running for the few weeks of cycle time if you need more room for your fish. Good luck -

I'm not defending MS - but your first post made it sound like the lights were taken back the next day, now this post says it was a "couple of weeks" from date of purchase before being returned. Thus, a possible reason why they got hard time on return.

1) depends on how low on back of your tank your 3 holes are drilled as to whether you can use for closed loop. If they are only a few inches from the top, you will be sucking air if you use a big pump - at least that is my opinion. Sounds as if they are near top of tank with your original intent to use as drains to feed sump.

http://www.usatoday.com/news/opinion/edito...ore-green_x.htm USA Today Editorial/Opinion Gore isn't quite as green as he's led the world to believe By Peter Schweizer Al Gore has spoken: The world must embrace a "carbon-neutral lifestyle." To do otherwise, he says, will result in a cataclysmic catastrophe. "Humanity is sitting on a ticking time bomb," warns the website for his film, An Inconvenient Truth. "We have just 10 years to avert a major catastrophe that could send our entire planet into a tailspin." ON DEADLINE: Your thoughts? Graciously, Gore tells consumers how to change their lives to curb their carbon-gobbling ways: Switch to compact fluorescent light bulbs, use a clothesline, drive a hybrid, use renewable energy, dramatically cut back on consumption. Better still, responsible global citizens can follow Gore's example, because, as he readily points out in his speeches, he lives a "carbon-neutral lifestyle." But if Al Gore is the world's role model for ecology, the planet is doomed. For someone who says the sky is falling, he does very little. He says he recycles and drives a hybrid. And he claims he uses renewable energy credits to offset the pollution he produces when using a private jet to promote his film. (In reality, Paramount Classics, the film's distributor, pays this.) Public records reveal that as Gore lectures Americans on excessive consumption, he and his wife Tipper live in two properties: a 10,000-square-foot, 20-room, eight-bathroom home in Nashville, and a 4,000-square-foot home in Arlington, Va. (He also has a third home in Carthage, Tenn.) For someone rallying the planet to pursue a path of extreme personal sacrifice, Gore requires little from himself. Then there is the troubling matter of his energy use. In the Washington, D.C., area, utility companies offer wind energy as an alternative to traditional energy. In Nashville, similar programs exist. Utility customers must simply pay a few extra pennies per kilowatt hour, and they can continue living their carbon-neutral lifestyles knowing that they are supporting wind energy. Plenty of businesses and institutions have signed up. Even the Bush administration is using green energy for some federal office buildings, as are thousands of area residents. But according to public records, there is no evidence that Gore has signed up to use green energy in either of his large residences. When contacted Wednesday, Gore's office confirmed as much but said the Gores were looking into making the switch at both homes. Talk about inconvenient truths. Gore is not alone. Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean has said, "Global warming is happening, and it threatens our very existence." The DNC website applauds the fact that Gore has "tried to move people to act." Yet, astoundingly, Gore's persuasive powers have failed to convince his own party: The DNC has not signed up to pay an additional two pennies a kilowatt hour to go green. For that matter, neither has the Republican National Committee. Maybe our very existence isn't threatened. Gore has held these apocalyptic views about the environment for some time. So why, then, didn't Gore dump his family's large stock holdings in Occidental (Oxy) Petroleum? As executor of his family's trust, over the years Gore has controlled hundreds of thousands of dollars in Oxy stock. Oxy has been mired in controversy over oil drilling in ecologically sensitive areas. Living carbon-neutral apparently doesn't mean living oil-stock free. Nor does it necessarily mean giving up a mining royalty either. Humanity might be "sitting on a ticking time bomb," but Gore's home in Carthage is sitting on a zinc mine. Gore receives $20,000 a year in royalties from Pasminco Zinc, which operates a zinc concession on his property. Tennessee has cited the company for adding large quantities of barium, iron and zinc to the nearby Caney Fork River. The issue here is not simply Gore's hypocrisy; it's a question of credibility. If he genuinely believes the apocalyptic vision he has put forth and calls for radical changes in the way other people live, why hasn't he made any radical change in his life? Giving up the zinc mine or one of his homes is not asking much, given that he wants the rest of us to radically change our lives. http://today.reuters.com/news/newsarticle....&src=rss&rpc=22 By Jim Loney MIAMI (Reuters) - A noted hurricane research team on Thursday reduced its forecast for the Atlantic hurricane season but said it would still be above average with 15 tropical storms, seven of which would become hurricanes. In May, the Colorado State University team formed by pioneer forecaster William Gray had predicted the 2006 season would bring 17 storms and that nine would become hurricanes. The CSU forecast, which is updated several times each year, said three of the hurricanes would be "intense" storms of Category 3 or higher on the five-stage Saffir-Simpson hurricane scale. The May forecast predicted five intense hurricanes. Intense storms have maximum sustained winds of at least 111 miles per hour (179 km per hour). The forecast was lowered because tropical Atlantic sea surface temperatures are not quite as warm and eastern Pacific waters are warming, which tends to dampen Atlantic hurricane activity, the CSU researchers said in a statement. "We're not reducing the number of hurricanes because we had only two named storms through late July," Gray said. Last year produced a record 28 tropical storms, topping the old mark of 21 set in 1933. Fifteen turned into hurricanes and four of those were Category 5, the most destructive type. Hurricane Katrina, which burst the levees protecting New Orleans, killed more than 1,300 people and caused more than $80 billion in damage, becoming the costliest natural disaster in U.S. history. The June 1-November 30 season has produced three tropical storms so far. The latest, Chris, was fading as it moved north of Puerto Rico on Thursday.

http://www.wamas.org/forums/index.php?act=...y=2006&m=8&d=13 Tank tour, 1-4 pm, August 13th I somehow managed to be in town on the date of a MD/DC tank tour. Nothing pimped, but I promise to scrape the glass and clean up the salt creep. I won the 90 gallon reef at the WAMAS symposium a few years ago. The goal was a gorgonian/softy tank, but the SPS has taken over. The sump/fuge, Ca reactor and autotopoff are all DIY, so come and poke fun, learn or suggest improvements. Some closer shots. Haven't taken too many recently. The seahorse/seagrass/gorgonian tank started last winter. I thought it would be fun to put some CB seahorses into a ptch reef style tank, with a few piles of live rock, some gorgonians, and turtle grass planted in a vDSB. I just added a second, younger pair with the original spiky pair I got from Jorge Gomezjurado in January. Mr and Mrs Spike The newbs going into quarantine There will be snacks, beverages, plus lots of various monti and gorgonian frags, mushrooms, chaeto and maybe a few acro frags as well. Address: It's a few miles from Rik's tour. Hey all: I have decided to have a Tank Tour on Sunday August 13th It will be form 2pm on. (CMAS has a TT in Towson from 1-3 then they will be heading down my way - I hope) I would like to have things wraped up by 5:30 if possible. I have a Euro-braced 65x36x25 tank with a 48x30x18 sump. My frag tank is attached to the system and is a 65 wide (36x24x18). All 3 tanks are from Glasscages. You can see some older pictures HERE but things will look much different by the TT as will be re-aquascaping soon and adding some old equipment back on to the tank (UV etc....) Here is a picture I took @ lunch today: As people who have seen my tank will notice, I lost lots of corals in a mini crash last month. Just means I have lots of room to fill with new stuff. (old pic below) -Rik Please post here if you are planning to come over

Waikiki Aquarium: New Exhibit Fund Raising
Gatortailale replied to Gatortailale's topic in Conservation & Sustainability
I briefly talked to copps last night about this. He will be passing through Waikiki in Oct. and can hand deliver a check - if we were to get donations gathered in time. I have not had a chance to talk to all the officers to see what their thoughts are on this, as far as a method, or methods for collecting money. I also would like ideas from members on what your thoughts are on how we raise money. a) Not sure what you mean by this. If you want officers to personally match donations from our own bank account, I don't think so - not made of money. - or did you mean that we would use club funds to match members personal donations up to dollar amount? - please clarify your idea. moving forward on start of plan, the club members need to decide: 1) what is our goal - is it to donate minimum $500 to get wamas name on sign next to exhibit, or do we raise as much as we can up to date we all determine we should cut off raising funds. 2) What will be the method(s) for raising funds a) raffle of donated frags and delbeek book b) straight cash donations from members c) other suggested options. 3) recognizing donors - I will ask John C. if he can get any details from Delbeek. On wamas end, we can create a webpage and put link on home page, on wamas web page we can list donors; can categorize by a level if you want too. 4) donating - I'll have to review by-laws to see about non-profit donating to another non-profit. Maybe it will be easier to have wamas gather checks made out to waikiki (will have John C. find out who we make check payable to out there) and then individuals who donate can get tax deduction on income tax if they use them - but we can send a wamas letter with all the checks asking that donation be recognized in name of wamas club. all help is welcome -
http://reefs.org/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=89236 Waikiki Aquarium: Northwestern Hawaiian Islands Exhibit Fund Raising The Waikiki Aquarium is planning a new exhibit to highlight the aquatic life found in the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands. This chain of islands, atolls and seamounts extends for approximately 1200 miles from Kauai, northwest to Kure Atoll. Recently designated as a national monument by President Bush, the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands represent the largest living coral reef region in the United States, and are home to wide variety of unique marine life. Waikiki Aquarium staff have designed a 5000 gallon exhibit to feature some of the rare and endemic fish found in these waters. The exhibit will highlight rare and unusual marine fish such as Masked Angelfish (Genicanthus personatus), Japanese Pygmy Angelfish (Centropyge interrupta), Morwongs (Cheilodactylus vittatus) and Bearded Armorheads (Evistias acutirostris). The estimated total cost for this exhibit will be $225,000 US and donations (tax deductable) would be most welcome. Donations of $500-$4999 US will be recognized on a donor

makes sense  [now I have to run the math to check your formula ] or more logical thought why would you want to provide more ammunition for the wife to complain about cost of running your tank?
