Dear Hellolights Customers, We
-
Now chip has to take back that bottle of "Purple-up" he got you for Christmas.
-
if packed properly it should be okay until then. Keep in dark. Best would be if you have a way to keep temp constant or at 75-77 range. Get a little tub/tank/bucket with a heater in it and float bag. Maybe want to check warranty seller has of when you have to accept shipment by and when, in theory fish should be acclimated by (time) I once got a fish from liveaquaria on Saturday delivery, long story short - after fedex plane went down and shipment didn't get in till 9 pm - the fish was fine when I got it at like 10pm that night
-
I agree with dhoch advice. If you want more info, see here in WAMAS FAQ pinned section.

That looks dandy dan. Shape reminds me of the fallout shelter symbol. Please PM me with your suggested retail price for one of your units. I think my system needs one of them. Folks, if you think this craftsmanship is good, you should see what he can do with some flour, water, and few other ingredients at Fireflies.

nitrates have reached critical mass! help!
Gatortailale replied to madmax7774's topic in General Discussion
hmmmm, yup stiring up sand will do that. But, I now might lean more to the starvation side since you say you only feed once a week. Angel will eat all frozen foods, most dry food and flake and even nori sheets. Once you get water params under control, I would try feeding small daily feedings or every other day; or alternate days b/w nori and frozen foods . Bigger water change is a quick fix. Maybe some carbon as well couldn't hurt if you use a good reef safe brand. -
nitrates have reached critical mass! help!

Are you using RO/DI water? Do you have protein skimmer - if so, what brand, how often do you clean it? Cut back on amount of food you add to tank. Any kids feeding when your not home? -
Wait 6 months or more for manderin so that you have established system and lots of pods to support one. Tangs - if you are going to get them, get 3-4 and add them at the same time. The #'s will spread aggression. I have kept 4 yellows since Jan. 2001 and find they are no more aggressive than any other tang. Atlantic Blue Tangs grow fairly fast - I have had one since 2002 and dwarfs the yellows. No experience with sohal. Maybe John at BRK can comment since he has that one in the display. Yellowtail - I have had 1 since I set up tank in oct. 2000 (still same fish - my first sw fish). No issues for me as housed by self. Wrasse - no experience with the one you list - sixline very active, but may pester other wrasse down road - although mine didn't bug the mystery I added this summer. Could be because mystery has tail spot to warn off predators. Triggers - no experience Anthias - I would wait for tank to be up and running for 6+ months before getting them. They tend to be a little hard to get them to adapt to tank life at first. Once established, they are great. I have 2 types (lyretail & bimacs.) You can encourage them to eat with cyclop-eze food. Coral beauty should be fine, as with all angels they are hit or miss if they pick on corals. I have kept potters, flame, coral beauty, majestic and emperor and none have every picked on a sps - at least no noticable damage. Good luck.

Thank you for checking out WAMAS. I hope the advice you get here is helpful. 1) Figure out your budget on how much you want to spend/can spend 2) Decide if you are looking for / want a new tank or used. 3) As tgallo said, try to visit some members homes and see how they set things up and/or look through posts here for threads & the wamas gallery about members systems - some have photos of their system and equipment. If you are still interested in setting up a tank, make sure you buy good equipment - especially when it comes to protein skimmer, lighting equipment, and RO/DI water filter. - Also, get the biggest tank you can afford. If your budget is enough, go with a 120 to get the 24" front to back - makes aqua-scaping rock much easier. I would also go with built in overflows. Good luck & ask lots of questions.

I have a maxi 400 and 10g tank. Your pops knows where I'm at.

Emergency assist - anyone know where I can get.....

Doug at Deltec - should have them in stock - maybe marvin at atlantis in Richmond -
I'll check it out. I like my 1st source on controller knowledge - ask dhoch. He has checked out almost all of them over the last few years and talked to all exhibiting at MACNA this year - he still, last I checked, says neptune is one of the best. just my .02
-
did you check temp with 2nd temp probe? I thought my tank was running hot -80+ plus and dave hoch. came over one day with portable ph/temp trobe and (same day he did lighting par) and his probe showed my tank only at 77 - off by 3 degrees. Just a thought. Like tony said, depends on lights & pumps. What about a 7" clip on fan for starters. Brand, since I have 3x400w on my 215, i ended up getting a tradewind chiller. Made in USA, good warranty. I also saw geofloors had also researched chillers and I went off that advice too.

Have fun in upstate. Though I don't think you are a full reef junkie until you buy something like a aquacontroller that will send you email/text updates with status of your tank. Now if I can just convince dhoch to come to my place and help me finish setting up my control I have had since sept. 22. it's look at that, I have had it for 3 months and not set it up yet, what am I thinking.

DYK Did you know that a refugium is beneficial to both a reef and fish only systems? A refugium can be of any size and are nothing more than a refuge from predation, which is connected to a larger tank with shared filtration. A refugium is used to grow algae for Natural Nitrate Reduction (NNR), isolate sensitive critters such as Seahorses or to hold/raise food such as copepods and amphipods for the main tank. Most refugia are used for NNR using macroalgaes and caulerpa to feed off the nitrates in the main tank. This also provides hiding and breeding areas for your copepods and amphipods which are a great live food source for picky eaters such as Dragonets. Don

H. Hippopus is a clam - see: http://www.clamsdirect.com/store/home.php?cat=8 Your lights should be fine. Since this will be first clam, you may want to pick up the new clam book BRK is stocking by James Fatherree. I would also, as noted by me above, start with durasa as your first clam. Not as attractive as maxima or crocea, but a little more forgiving / easier to care for. Should be just fine on your sandbed.

Outside of the Pygmy/ Cherub anglefish, my quick review didn't alert me to any other potential clam nippers. I have Squamosa in my mixed reef with Emperor, majestic, potters & flame and no problems for 5+ months with it in there. However, I don't know your system & didn't see what you said you have for lighting. From most light demanding to least Maxima Crocea Squomosa Durasa Gigas H. Hip. Good one to start with is Durasa. Find one 3-5 inches w/ quick reaction time. Unless you are in rush, you may want to wait until after Jan. 20 and Barry's lecture on clams at next Qtr. meeting. See Squammy behind cap & left of Emp.

Forgot to post this one last night. I'll try to finish painting rest of room so I can host tank tour in next few months.
