Thanks all for complements. We will try to work on things for next meeting to make it better. We had a little miscommunication b/w us and the aquarium regarding when we could set up- we thought we could set up at 4:30, but they wanted us to wait until public left at 5:00. Thanks to all the members who pitched in we were able to set the room super fast. You all were great. WAMAS Tank at aquarium 1) Thanks again to you all for voting to go forward with project. - concerns about our home tank vs. their tanks - quick answer is in 1982 Congress cut funding to NADC and switched it to Baltimore. A non-profit took over NADC and ran it until 2003 on very tiny budget. ALL systems were run on tap water. In 2003, NADC talked Baltimore into taking it over. The new management team NADC raised admission up to $5 per person (from $2) which gives them a little money to pay some staff & they got 1.5 million grant from NOAA to renovate some systems. But as those of you who attended saw, there are a lot of tanks to spread that money over so it still is a very beneficial thing for us to sponsor this tank financially. - water quality at NADC - as mentioned above, NADC has been run on tap water. About 1 month ago, they were able to secure a 100 gpd RODI unit and two 1200 gallon storage tanks so ... they will have RODI water available for the tank we sponsor. Just a side note on running system on tap water, as you saw if you attended, sure you can maintain a system, BUT DC about 3 weeks added phophate to the city water during their routine winter maintenance and of course nobody would think to tell aquarium about it so . . . phosphates led to the major hair algae outbreak. Sum, NADC is a public aquarium and we are part of the public. NADC will only be as good as the public makes it via support either financial or man hours. We as a club can help out and give back to the community and make NADC better. Thanks again all!

Did I read that right . . . Doug said he is a girly man.

Umm, others will have better advice than me, but I think you are thinking more along lines of culturing brine shrimp or rotifers or copepods rather than phyto. Phyto is more like a green liquid algae that filter feeds can feed on - clams & some corals. Pods and brine is what your mandarin will want to eat. http://www.reed-mariculture.com/ or http://www.dtplankton.com/mgw2/main.html culture here: http://www.brineshrimpdirect.com/ or that place in florida that sells roti culture (can't think of name right now)

Keep in mind that meeting site is a Gov. building and ALL equipment would have to go through metal detector - but you can trade if needed - or trade on the street / parking garage ... with that in mind, post up your equipment here

It's sunlight supply brand = very good. HQI = run DE bulbs or some use to overdrive other mogul buls to get more par from lamp. First question to ask is what are any future upgrade plans - like will you get a 200 or 300 gallon tank in few years? If so, get 400's If sticking with the 110, maybe 250 HQI is best for that setup. Appears to drive 2 400w lamps, but may be wrong on this point. Would have to read on Sunlight website or call hellolights. downside to getting dual ballast, if one of the two fails, and you have to send back for warranty repair, you end up losing both ballasts. Deal - well depends on lamps you want to run - double end (DE) or mogul; color or K of lamp (10k, 15k, 20k etc.); and brand of lamp. Visit here and put in types of ballast and bulb and see the plots. http://www.reeflightinginfo.arvixe.com/ I have 3 x 400 on my 215 which is 30" deep. - downside is they will heat the water = buying chiller or running lots of fans to evaporate - yields to damp house.

makes me laugh when thinking of t-5 users getting box of broken lamps. Very rarely do you ever hear of MH lamps arriving broken. Just another reason in my mind to stick with MH. Okay, just had to pick on Dave a bit, now back to your normal program.

Short answer - the old posts were made when we were using ikonboard system. We switched over to invision power boards and they did a big conversion, but some of the posts are goofed via date order or extra charachters ... in them. But, at least history is preserved to some extent. Maybe invision admin was when they did conversion.

Dr. Bruce Carlson - Speaking at CMAS meeting Jan 7
Gatortailale replied to Gatortailale's topic in Club News
Reminder for this Sunday! On Sunday January 7th at 6pm we will be having our monthly meeting at Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Lab. This month's speaker is Dr. Bruce Carlson, Vice President of Education, Conservation and Exhibits at Georgia Aquarium. Bruce is a native of the state of Michigan where he enjoyed studying the aquatic life in the stream behind his house. In 1971 he received his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. After graduating, he traveled to Guyana, South America, where he worked as a research assistant studying the reproductive biology of freshwater fishes. A year later, in 1972, he joined the Peace Corps and was assigned to the University of the South Pacific in Suva, Fiji. His task was to conduct a biological survey of the marine life of the Fiji Islands and help establish a permanent collection for the University. Nearly 30 years later, the University has created a new museum to house this collection, which has become very important for marine studies in Fiji. In 1975, Bruce moved to Hawaii where he earned a PhD at the University of Hawaii. Six months after moving to Hawaii, he started work at the Waikiki Aquarium in 1976 as a student helper. As an aquarist, he initiated a series of new exhibits which were -

New livestock this week includes a beautiful Powder Blue Tang, Yellow Tangs, a Desjardini Tang, small and medium Hippo Tangs, Coral Beauty Angels, Lemonpeel Angels, Flame Hawks, Midas Blennies, a large female Gold-Striped Maroon Clown, a mated pair of Gold-Striped Maroon Clowns, BlueFin Damsels, Royal Grammas, a cute little Yellow Watchman Goby, a nice sized Yashia Goby, Porcupine Puffers, Bangaii Cardinals, Flame Cardinals, Six Line Wrasse, Green Mandarins, Spotted Mandarins, Nassarius Snails, Serpent Starfish, Mithrax and Sally Lightfoot Crabs, Pistol Shrimp, small Peppermint and Jumbo Peppermint Shrimp, Turbo Snails, Pincushion Urchins, Red and Yellow Live Sponges, Red Macroalgae, Crocea Clams, Squamosa Clams, some beautiful Rose Anemones, and the list keeps going on! Unfortunately we were still not able to get any corals in this week because of the holiday and new year. We should however be receiving quite a large shipment in next week! We do have quite a few corals available including some nice Frogspawns, Hammers, Torchs, Plates, Pearls, Trumpets, Brains, Acroporas, Montiporas, Toadstools, Devils Hands, Porites, Mushrooms, Zoanthids, and more! A shipment of Blue Ridge Live Rock and Alor Live Rock is arriving this week. Blue Ridge is coral that has broken off the reef and died, then becomes a home for all sorts of micro-organisms just as live rock is. The skeleton of the coral is blue which adds a nice color to any tank since blue corals can be hard to come by. Alor is what you see when you first walk in the store, our 150 Display is stocked with Alor rock which is very porous, lightweight, and comes in various sizes. Both Blue Ridge and Alor create a great look for any aquarium! We also received some Fiji rock that came out of an established aquarium. The rock is very nice with lots of purple coralline algae yet has some bubble algae on it. We are selling the rock at $4.50 per pound. What's On Sale All Marc Weiss and Weiss Organic products are 10% off! Weiss products are made from either natural or USDA certified organic materials. The products are designed to condition water and creating an Environmental Equilibrium for the aquarium hobbyist. Products include Reef Vital DNA, Immuno Vital, Black Powder, Combo Vital, Coral Vital, Live Sand Booster, Phosphate & Silicate Magnet, Funky Old Reef Mud, Algae Magic, Coral Boost, Sand Boost and more! Current USA SunPod halide units are 10% off! SunPods are designed to "sit" on your tank rather than suspended from your ceiling. They are available in lots of sizes; from 20" up to 72" so are able to fit just about any tank size. The smaller units are available with 70 watt HQI or 150 watt HQI and all the larger units are only available with 150 watt HQI. All the units come with separate white and blue Lunar Lights built in to give it a nice moonlight effect. These units are great for upgrading the light on your aquarium and especially look good on the AquaPod and ViaAqua nano-tanks! Did You Know? Did you know that Mithrax Crabs, also known as Emerald Crabs, eat all kinds of marine algae and nuisance algae, especially Valonia which is commonly known as green bubble algae? They are a hard-shelled crab with a shiny green, flat, compact body and hairy legs. They are sometimes available in a reddish color as well. They are a hardy crab and are very popular for use in an aquarium because of its varied appetite for multiple algae's, good and bad, and leftover foods. They do require an established aquarium with plenty of live rock for scavenging. If you have an algae problem, get some Mithrax Crabs and make sure you have enough various clean-up crew critters to help out with the algae problem. And if you have bubble algae issues, make sure to pick up some Mithrax Crabs! Email: staff@marinescene.com Phone: 703-689-2815 Website: http://www.marinescene.com

Was going to make a joke, but I think I'll let this one pass or slip by. Just to easy of a slam dunk. Howard, I guess that means no room for you - even if you sit on a pot holder

so far it's just the 2 polyps? If it was me, I would wait a few more days to see if any more pop out. Any more signs on stock? Has anyone suggested feeding it - maybe cyclop or photoplankton.
