  1. I purchased jamesbuf's 180 after discretekarma had to sell it. Anyway after my wife and I purchased our first home it is finally time to set it up. What I found was the main front pane was damaged in the move. There are two chips on both edges of the front, and it is pretty well scratched. I am contemplating replacing that piece of glass with a new one. Has anyone done this before? Is there anywhere in MD/VA that would sell the glass other then glasscages? Thanks!
  2. +1 to failng power heads. You don't have a maxijet anywhere in the tank? I have had the same thing happen to me multiple times. Most of the occurances have been due to failing maxijet 1200 power heads. Oh and the failure could be in your sump, I had my power head in the sump and felt it in the main display.
  3. I always kept my SG between 1.025-1.026. My temperature ranged from79-82. I was keeping LPS and SPS with good results.
  4. Huh, I think we should open a new topic on how to optimize your saltwater fish tank's power consumption.....
  5. I am in Columbia, MD and might have a system you can "rent/borrow". pm me.
  6. Save yourself the hassle and invest in a RO and DI system. I know it seems like a big cost, I thought the same thing, but it is well worth the investment. If you are not a full member of wamas, invest the 20 bucks(well worth it) and try checking or bulletin board for a used RO and DI system. Just not having to go to marine scene every time you want to change water, top off the system, seems like a hug plus to me. Also what type of salt are you using? How old are the bulbs you are using? Sorry if you have already answered these questions. Plus have you checked your phosphate or nitrate level, if so what are the readings?
  7. I had a Huma Huma trigger fish for almost two years and he would always nip at my fingers and hands. Of course, I hand fed the trigger every night so I don't blame the fish. However, I have seen a Clown Trigger turn from a perfectly normal and social creature to removing a good chunk out of my pinky because my hand was too close at feeding time. I would second temperature change to increased aggression. In the warmer months, ie when we were too cheap to turn the air on, and the temp would increase and the Huma Huma would end up "hitting" for food harder and harassing my hand more.
  8. I ended up moving mine from the sump to the tank. It didnt look great, but after my feed pump died and I didn't notice(ie on vacation) and I lost my Emperor. I now keep one in the sump, and one in the tank(low to hid).
  9. I ran an Octopus 150 NW on a 90 for 1.5 years without a problem, for the money it was the best purchase I could make. I did end up modifying mine and found all the info i needed on reef central, so I would start there. Also if you have a problem searching reef central without being a member, I recommend using the google syntax "search term site:forums.reefcentral.com" I ended up moding the skimmer because of the claimed performace increase, and I do have to say one of the mods, opening the intake pump pipe diameter made the biggest difference. The next mod I did was use a gate value to "set" the water level in the skimmer, the pipe/shaft that the octopus came with was just a pain in the butt to setup and tune, I would recommend this mod if the MDX doesnt come with a gate valve to add one. As of the collection cup, no I personally wouldn't get it.

  13. I always perform a 10 minute fresh water dip with mythel blue on my fish before putting them in QT. I have done this with two angels and a trigger, but intend to keep doing it. I follow these instructions: http://www.reefland.com/forum/marine-fish-...ine-fishes.html I have never purchased a fish that was visually sick, or had spots and always spend at least an hour observing the fish in the store before purchasing. Of course I say this now, after not doing this with my first fish and losing him to incompetence. I personally think doing a freshwater dip is a must.

  16. Ok, so that is two votes for the Jager heaters, anyone else?
  17. For the past day I have been redoing the sump and fug for my 90. All the while I have been attempting to hunt down a stray current that was shocking me every time i broke the surface of the water. I hunted and hunted, pulled out all the power heads, unplugged the main pump, unplugged the skimmer pump and disconnected the lights. Still it was shocking me every time, driving me nuts. So I decided to see if it was in the main tank, it was. Alright I thought, what in the heck has changed? Well, I had added a new heater to the main tank, but that couldn't be it. Ha, it turns out it was and now I am pissed. I have never had a problem before with Marineland visi-therm stealth heaters and now I am uncertain about getting another one. Two weeks ago one failed on me and now this new one is leaking current. Does anyone have a suggestion for a reasonably priced heater?
  18. After letting the glue and the silicon cure overnight, I am currently testing the hard drive magnet bracket and will post an update later and maybe a DIY if anyone is interested.
  19. I am going to attempt something before purchasing. I have two dead hard drives and I pulled the magnets out of them. I am going to apoxy one to the powerhead bracket and the other will be outside the tank. If it works I will post a diy.
  20. I found this on reefcentral http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthre...mp;pagenumber=3 and think I will just follow these instructions.
  21. When I received my first frags of galaxea one was partly dead(50%), and now, 3 months latter, it has taken over the dead parts and went from one small head to covering the mounting disc. I would say that the recovery is pretty much guaranteed from my experience.
  22. I am looking for a bunch(at least 8) of Rare-Earth magnets for, 1 mounting a frag, and 2 for a power head. Anyone know where to purchase them locally? if not anyone ordered this from http://www.rare-earth-magnets.com/ ?
