so me and a buddy of mine were out fishing on his boat talking about are salt water tanks and we came to relize how crapy rozens is. In the past 3 months that both of are tanks have been set up combined between his 30 gallon cube and my 180 we have lost , naso tang= 95$, blue jaw trigger=60$, 2 flame back angels = 170$, ferry wraise=60$, hippo tang=40$. Plus the price there is getting expensive just like the other lfs, so i dont recomend anyone to buy fish from there unless you want to blow away money. :why:

Did you quarantine the fish first or just drop them in the tank? Please be honest. All of the fish you mentioned have huge potential for mortality early on, from what I know. If Roozen's is responsible for poor merchandise, we should note it. I have purchased from there without incident, as have others. They do have a great selection. If you ask me, they have better conditions than the majority of other LFS's I have visited--BRK and Marine Scene aside.

no i use the drip method for about 2-3 hrs than i put them in the tank and for snails and hermits i go even longer than that.

I've had many experiences with Roozen's, mostly with corals, but

also some inverts (cleaners, snails, etc)

I've probably bought stuff there 20 times. I've never had a problem.

I was there this last weeke nd and came home with 4 bags.

He was having a great 20% off everything sale.

Roozen's has more selection than the next closest 5 LFS combined, and

Larry really does know a lot.

I've bought a hippo there about 6 months ago, and it's about doubled in

size now.

I've bought fish and coral from them in the past 3 years and had very little problem, I even have a copperbanded butterfly that I got 2 1/2 years ago in my tank and he is doing great. I'm sorry that you had a problem with them, but sometime fish just don't live, I've had other fish from many other stores die for no real reason through the years.

First of all, 3 months is not exactly an established tank. It can be very tricky to get both the naso tang and the blue jaw trigger to aclimate properly and actually start eating prepared food. As a matter of fact my gf has purchased a Naso Tang from Roozens about 3 months ago and he did take a while to start eating. We quarantined him for a month and when he finally got comfortable and started eating, we introduced him to the main tank. Now he's the king of the tank and doing extremely well. We also purchased numerous cleaner shrimp, tomato clowns... and never had any fatalities.

It sounds to me that either your tanks are not yet established and/or your quarantine, feeding practices are questionable.

Must Disagree with you Wolfman, I bought from Roozens many times before with success bought from my lfs and the stock dies darn near in 48 - 72hrs. My lfs clean as a whistle = everything dies, Roozens, dirty, stinky, algae and green water, no heaters, small prot skimmers, poor light quality, poor water quality, lots of natural light = 100% survival in my tank! Thumbs Up for Joss and crew!

Raf

Oh goody, Wolfman is bashing another local fish store.

He's gonna run out of stores to bash and then what? ...start buying fish at SuperPetz...

It's not very reasonable to keep buying fish when you had fatality. Very much important to figure WHY fish died first.

Raf, what is your LFS from which fish dies?

Roozens scares me too.....only bought my rock from them, it seems like a factory up there.

I know i should quarentine(sp?) my fish i buy but BRK has not sold me any ich yet  ....maybe thats why his prices are better ...they come ich free!

**this is just a new guys opinion...not bashing**

I don't mean to offend you, but if you had said that evertime you go in there you see sick fish or get bad advice, then I would consider that your critizism was valid. However, having purchased these fish, and still trusting that you know what your doing, I have to expect that they were healthy when you bought them or you wouldn't have done so. Considering this, I have the dilema of understanding your claim against them. Are you saying that their fish harbor some unforseen disease for which no immediate signs or symptoms exists? I hate to say it but without further justification it just looks likes all that you and your friend have established is your own failures and your inability to take responsibility for them, which is probably why you have multiple examples to share. I maybe wrong, but then again, before you slander someones business you should have the decency to offer more evidence of wrong doing then just saying my fish are dead, they suck.

We are very lucky to have Roozens around. I have been dealing with him for over 12yrs. and have to say again that we are lucky to have him around.

I goto roozens frequently and have bought an emperoter(sp) angel, flame hawk fish, a bunch of green chromis, 6 line wrase and the only thing I lost was the wrass because I was stupid and didn't cover the intake of my power head. He got in a fight with it and lost. I think they are not perfect but realy do a good job at getting what people want.

My only gripe is that I like to see the prices posted. If you can make a separate deal all well and good, but I like to see that the beginning price is the same for everyone. Hard to believe that everyone working their can give the same price for the same items straight from their head. It gives me the feeling that they charge according to how they feel on a particular time/day or whether the customer looks like they'll go for that price or not. Maybe because they have such a large selection, open/visible pricing isn't an option, but that's the part I don't like.

Eve

Yes, sometimes I experienced that, but for the most part all fishes I purches are between $28 and $38 (all small to medium size) and most SPS corals are $24 to $38 (again depending on size), which turns to be reasonable and comparable with other LFS. Now Larry and Joss know me from WAMAS beacuse I used to go and pick up raffle items (coupons) from them for our quarter meetings, and when I purchase I look for signs of health in every livestock I choose. I only lost one fish and it was my fault for not quarantine, but everything else is doing great and healthy.

Congressional... Go Figure! Sorry 143gadgets :(

Same here. It's espcially tough for someone like me who doesn't know what "fair" prices are for certain fish.

What I do is I go under dressed (looking a little ragged) talk like I know what I'm talking about, talk with Joss and then bargain with them. I have been there well dressed like after work and the usually try to charge me more in the begining but I started going late in the evenings on weekends before closing and found that I get the best prices! Works for me every time! Everytime Joss see's me he tries to hide and smiles, and when I get to him he says you are a hard guy to please, you always get the best stock for the cheapest price, I have to limit your visits you cost me money all the time! :)

My 2 cents

Like Eve and Raf said ...prices should be posted.

I was there about two months ago and Larry gave a price of $28 for a leather coral, when I asked for it 5 minutes later it was $48! When asked about the price difference and why are the prices are not posted he said that prices change every minute ..I was furious! Another thing to keep in mind with prices at Roozen

Maybe someone could ease my thoughts on roozens....since they are the best selection in the area.

the day i was there getting my 30 lbs of rock...i seen the fish guy take the fish right from the air freight boxes, and cut the bag and plop the fishes right intoo tank....this is what worries me...is this good for the livestock?no acclimation periods?

thanks!

(edited)

Bryan,

What I've seen for aclimation is they place the fish on the little aquariums that are on the side back (grrhh in the back near where the bags and air is next to the live brine shrimp ) first they put the fish and the water they come in then they take an air tube from the top tank and the water drips in to the little aquarium. The fishes are picked up by hand and taken to the aquariums or little boxes. I've seen a manderin dropped during delevery (do the thank) he just picked it up and continued with the journey.

Like Eve and Raf said ...prices should be posted.

That would be nice, but as Eve said, I think the problems is he just has too much stuff, moving

too quickly to keep up with it. He does have standard prices for standard stuff though

(cleaners, snails, etc)

Maybe we can turn this thread into a positive. Let's make some recommendations on how to deal with Roozens if and when you decide to go there. Their selection is really good, so at some point even if you said you wouldn't go or wouldn't go back, you just may change your mind.

First suggestion - dress like a homeless person :lol2:
