I bought an Aqueon 500GPH fan type power head. Its too strong. Its not kicking up sand but it's tormenting the Xenia. I can't move the Xenia by the euphs where the flow is lower. And I can't move the power head to the other end cus the euphs will cut themselves against their skeletons. Soo...

 

Is it possible to Trim down the blades on the fan to lower the flow? What I wanted was a koralia 240 but I couldnt find one local. Nobody carries Hydor. Cept a certain store I do not enter which will remain nameless.

If you cut the fins down the chances of it remaining balanced are pretty slim which means it could have some crazy vibration. Also the motor will ramp up to a higher RPM which may or may not cause some issue with the unit, premature wear, more likely to seize up, etc. Can you wrap the intake area with some filter foam or needlepoint screen? That would slow down the flow.

+1 on the screen idea or even just zip-tie some acetate sheet around parts of the outside, maybe.  It won't hurt the powerhead, but will slow down the flow by limiting the amount of water that can get in via the sides.  Blade trimming will ruin it.

Huh, well amazon has Koralia 240 for $22 at the moment. You could also consider mounting it a little lower and pointing it up toward the surface to make the flow in the tank more indirect.

I cant imagine a pump that isnt blowing sand in a small tank being too much for xenia or the euphyllia.

I decided to put it on a cheapo timer.

It's on for 30 mins off for 1 hour. On a 24 hour schedule.

 

Xenia can tolerate it for 30 minutes at a time their pretty tough.

 

My euphs like the added flow when it's on.

Few things like direct flow but usually if it bounced off of something first it isnt any issue.

Yeah it's bouncing off two walls. And that corner is where the Xenia are lol their handling it better now. Last night they shriveled up I had to turn it off completely.

There is xenia in 2 of my little tanks getting the heck blasted out of it 24-7 in both tanks. It is perfectly fine, just keeps itself more compact as it is being blasted to one side, and isn't so great looking in that state, but it grows being like that.
