Joshifer August 26, 2016 August 26, 2016 I want to add color to my tank. I can't get corals yet. Working on the lighting. But I hear macros grow under my stock 7500k light What are nice macros to put in the DT? I really like dragons breath it's pretty. Any other suggestions. Maybe something that can go into the sand bed.
AlanM August 26, 2016 August 26, 2016 Check out blue ochtodes. I don't have any, but have always wanted to try it.
matt August 26, 2016 August 26, 2016 This is a good site to browse, even if you shop locally http://www.live-plants.com Do you have fish? When you say you're tank isn't ready for corals, does that mean you are ready for ornamental algae?
Origami August 26, 2016 August 26, 2016 Josh, Dragon's Breath does well under high flow. (Such as when it's zip-tied to a return nozzle.) It may not fare as well if it's anchored to a rock. Also, the nutrients needed to help fertilize macroalgae include nitrates and phosphates - for example, from fish waste and such. Without that, the plants may not thrive in what would be a nutrient poor environment. You may want to consider adding fish before macro for this reason.
Joshifer August 26, 2016 Author August 26, 2016 My cycles done. I was gonna add fish but I'm gonna wait another week to be sure. I say my tank isn't ready for coral because of my lighting. Monday I'll have my play money and I'm gonna order the micmol mini or the ai nano. Get some CUC. And join wamas and find some cool frags. Or I'll skip the light and join first and see what people are selling maybe I can save some money on used lights.

Also I modded my AQ20 last night for about $10 into a fuge. Just need chaeto some chaeto. If anyone wants help modding any Aqua clear into a hob fuge under $10 let me know. Quick trip to Walmart. Don't even need glues and polymers and all that. The $10 includes the light. Edited August 26, 2016 by Joshifer

Origami August 26, 2016 August 26, 2016 You actually gave me a great idea to hide my pumps. Zip tie dragons breath to them. Thanks Years ago, Dragon's Breath macro was really popular here. I think that Zygote may have started us all out on it. Anyway, we were giving it away right and left. I had it zip-tied on the return nozzle in my Biocube 29 back then and it grew like a weed. When just sitting in a sump, it seemed to be a slow grower and would even slowly recede. But tied to something where it got high flow? It took off under those conditions. It looks pretty cool, too, that way. Like flames fluttering sideways in the wind..

After I get fish I'm gonna hunt some dragons breath and zip them to my pumps. It'll add a lot of color too. Hehe. Thanks tom.
treesprite August 26, 2016 August 26, 2016 (edited) There is some kind of red macro I used to have that grows like a tree, with the bottom anchoring in rock. I had it in a nano as a display piece many years ago (I lost it when moving years ago). I can't remember the name, but will try to find somewhere on the internet. Edited August 26, 2016 by treesprite
AlanM August 26, 2016 August 26, 2016 Macros in the display can do well even if you're still in the ammonia part of your cycle. Some macro algae will directly use ammonia before it has converted to nitrate.
treesprite August 26, 2016 August 26, 2016 Nematosa. I found it listed here: http://marineplantbook.com/marinebooknemastoma.htm
treesprite August 26, 2016 August 26, 2016 (edited) Ebay has some macro algae listings, some with free shipping (unlike the high shipping of most online vendors http://www.ebay.com/bhp/macro-algae This looks like a nice deal for starting http://m.ebay.com/itm/NANO-CA-D-TOX-Macro-Algae-Chaeto-Ultra-Purple-Coralline-Dragon-Red-Razor-/112096639869?nav=SEARCH Edited August 26, 2016 by treesprite
AlanM August 26, 2016 August 26, 2016 Similar to what treesprite posted I really like red bubble algae. It doesn't seem to grow to plague like proportions like green bubble algae and has very pretty bright orange spots.

I may order that thanks. I bet it's a tiny piece on a plug lol

So I can start doing corals whenever I get some frags.
treesprite August 28, 2016 August 28, 2016 After looking at pictures of all those different macroalgaes, now I want to have an algae tank.
