I want to boost the water level in my sump but skimmer recommends only 6" depth. I don't need anything pretty. Are cinder block reef safe?

You can build a stand by cutting some pvc pipes to your dimension and put a piece of egg crate on it. or you can use any plastic container cut to your size and drill some holes around it.

I made a box out of egg crate and zip ties for my skimmer.

I've found styrofoam works well as long as the skimmer is heavy, also acrylic risers (used for displays in many store) are easy to find and inexpensive too...

I wouldn't trust cinder blocks or other building materials as they could have been kept with petrochemicals...

google "diy skimmer stand". That should give you lots of ideas, but most are eggcrate and pvc. If you do want to go pretty, you can get acrylic ones with adjustable height off of ebay for around $20 plus shipping. You can even have them customize your dimensions.

I would go this route. I also like it to be clean under my tank, including the sump. I've gone the route of egg crate and PVC, and although it gets the job done, I'm not crazy about the asthetics.

Gotcha thanks. That will work perfect. I hate spending money when I have egg crates but this is adjustable and will be easier to clean and stuff

Yeah a trip to HD for 1/2" Pvc fittings and zip ties would take care of it. You don't even need to glue it really

I have seen people use egg crate and 1" PVC's to make custom stands for meeting skimmer height requirements. I have seen it break too...if its not secured properly.
