sen5241b January 23, 2015 January 23, 2015 (edited) I need to add a lot of blue moon light on my corals. They don't floresce enough. Exactly what kind of ligh makes corals fluoresce at night? i only have a 20G so it doesn't have to be huge. Edited January 23, 2015 by sen5241b
Der ABT January 23, 2015 January 23, 2015 You don't want a really bright night light...they need to sleeptoo I have a Neptune aqua controller with their lunar sim I like a lot...matches the moon cycle outside which is cool...I know when it's a full moon before I even go outside....but you need a Neptune controller like an ac jr acii aciii or spec........there are others out ther too
sen5241b January 23, 2015 Author January 23, 2015 If I hold my blue leds closer to my red cyphastrea it glows way cool but the light is normally situated higher up. My blues come on only for a couple hours at night.
smallreef January 23, 2015 January 23, 2015 I've got some moonlights from dr F&S that were linkable that I like.... http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?pcatid=23518 You can run 4 on a run with one power supply and without the splitter... I've got 4 pods on my 150 and it twinkles beautifully
zygote2k January 23, 2015 January 23, 2015 as Evan said above- corals need to sleep. there needs to be total darkness at night in order for them to grow and thrive. Moonlights are yet another gimmick that manufacturers invented to see more product to the uneducated consumer. A true 'moonlight' would be a small, single 1watt light that travels across the tank and brightens/dims on a 28 day cycle. This experiment has been used to induce spawning in certain corals and clams.
Crob5965 January 23, 2015 January 23, 2015 I bought a cheap LED strip light on Ebay with a remote, it's bright enough that I can see what's in my tank, and allow things to glow. the light small reef suggested looks a little nicer, mine is cheaper but it also looks cheaper too, if I were doing it on a 20G I would probably go with Smallreef's idea over mine I bought this for my 90 http://www.ebay.com/itm/5M-SMD-5050-RGB-150LED-Non-Waterproof-Light-Strip-mini-44Key-IR-12V-2A-Adapter/301121204567?_trksid=p2047675.c100005.m1851&_trkparms=aid%3D222007%26algo%3DSIC.MBE%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D28791%26meid%3D57a38f3c10c94b9daa5a0fa22d434c81%26pid%3D100005%26rk%3D3%26rkt%3D6%26mehot%3Dpp%26sd%3D371192312554&rt=nc you cant see it under the canopy so it's not a big deal but I wouldn't want to look at it every day.

This experiment has been used to induce spawning in certain corals and clams. From Dr Foster Smith: "Research studies have shown that using rhythmic moon luminance is very helpful in spawning captive animals" Also, saw on discovery channel that corals do no need some level of moonlight so not sure if I agree with "needs total darkness" and like I said I keep moon light on for only a couple hours at night.
zygote2k January 24, 2015 January 24, 2015 if you want to have pretty colors at night, buy a blacklight and a poster and turn off the lights....
wangspeed January 24, 2015 January 24, 2015 I love watching my corals at night. Low powered royal blue LED are perfect for that. You do need to turn them off though so make sure they are on a controller of some sort. 21LEDUSA is my current preference. I like having these on a different controller than my Apex so I run their little controller too. -- Warren
sen5241b January 25, 2015 Author January 25, 2015 I notice most the vendors at the meet have their corlas under blue light
YHSublime January 26, 2015 January 26, 2015 I notice most the vendors at the meet have their corlas under blue light Because it looks better, pops colors. If you want something to stand out, you don't tone it down. I think your choice of "moonlights" is another way of saying you want to add more blue for viewing your tank. Get a reefbrite and call it a day. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
Hopeitlives January 26, 2015 January 26, 2015 So... No moonlight every night is most important? A period of total darkness.?
Crob5965 January 26, 2015 January 26, 2015 So... No moonlight every night is most important? A period of total darkness.? I leave mine on all night, it would make sense to turn them off at least when you go to bed, but I don't, in fact due to the fact that mine are cheap LED strips from Ebay that cost $7 I leave them on 24/7, they get washed out by my Evergrows during the day, but add a nice dim blue look for my Coral viewing at night.
DuffyGeos January 26, 2015 January 26, 2015 I leave a blue LED on every night at 3%. I don't think it harms anything and is like the moon. My frogspawn retracts fully and the polys extend fully at night for feeding on my SPS. My Maxspect Razor does have a program where the lights ramp up and down so it is never all on or all off quickly
