LanksTank February 7, 2014 Share February 7, 2014 So I've had my pair of Da Vinci clowns in my quarantine tank for 2 days now under observation. I went downstairs this morning and freaked out because the male and female were both having these convulsions where they would suddenly jerk to the side. I was worried so I did a quick Google search and found this; 'Convulsive' clownfish are actually demonstrating to their mate that they're ready to release eggs - or if its a male, asking the female to do so. It's called 'shimmering'. Can anyone with some experience in breeding/mating clownfish help me out here? Is the jerking a sign of some mating procedure, or is it something I should be concerned about?
Almon February 7, 2014 Share February 7, 2014 That is likely normal behavior, although I've only seen the male do it.

YHSublime February 7, 2014 Share February 7, 2014 I'm no expert, but it seems to me like they are just figuring out who's going to play the lady in the relationship, not getting ready to mate. Just my 2c

Djplus1 February 19, 2014 Share February 19, 2014 It's a dominance thing too. Add a bigger clown into a tank with a already present dominant female and your previous female will also do the shimmy.
