Will do, the antibiotic treatment calls for a water change + re-treatment every 24 hours for 4-5 days. I might also throw in a piece of egg crate to divide the pair if this was caused by them fighting, till irritation goes away.

I was thinking it looked as if it had gotten stung, but there are no corals in my tank. I was thinking it most likely had to be some kind of skin condition though, which is why I put an antibiotic in the water. Both my clowns had a habit of rubbing up against the glass heater from time to time and I don't know if the titanium heater could have burned them? It is the male in the picture. The female has always been a bit aggressive. I did she her pushing around the male and nipping at him when I got home last night.

Hey guys, I wanted to know if anyone can help me identify this? I was gone over the weekend and when I came back one of my clowns had tiny black specs all over its body. The other clown has some black specs but they are hardly noticeable. When I left Saturday morning, nothing was wrong and when I came back Sunday night I found this. I suspected black ich at first but I have no clue how it would've gotten introduced to the system. Right now I have my clowns in my quarantine tank till I move into my new apartment, and they have been in there for over 10 weeks with no signs of any stress or diseases. The only new thing in my system is a titanium heater I added because my cheap glass heater was wearing out. They are both eating fine and show no signs of stress. When I got back last night I did a 25% water change and applied an antibiotic. If antibiotic doesn't get rid of the specs I plan on moving to paraguard, then copper if that doesn't work. I've always heard that the general rule of thumb for flow is that you want 10x your total volume. 3-5x your flow seem way too low to me. On my 90 gal I was using a MagDrive 18, which I had running in my sump under my tank. If noise is a concern I wouldn't go with a MagDrive though because they hum alot even when I had Styrofoam under mine. You need to consider the loss of flow due to your plumbing as well. For about every foot (height) of water pumped, you lose about 100 gph of flow. A MagDrive 2 would barely pump water the height of your tank. Plus you lose flow for every fitting you place. If you only have two 3/4 inch gravity drains going from your tank to your sump, the maximum flow you could have would only be around 800 gph before you were pumping more water than you could drain. In my opinion it is always better to get a slightly bigger pump than you need cause you can always add a valve to tune down the flow, but if you buy a smaller pump then there's not much you can do (I learned the hard way). I don't believe that at all. It is definitely a money thing and not a way for each of them to "improve and grow." Its a little fishy (no pun intended) that they state they are still going to release separate products under a merger... AI and EcoTech are two big competitors in the LED field. Should be interesting to see how this affects cost of their LED fixtures in the future.

So I've had my pair of Da Vinci clowns in my quarantine tank for 2 days now under observation. I went downstairs this morning and freaked out because the male and female were both having these convulsions where they would suddenly jerk to the side. I was worried so I did a quick Google search and found this; 'Convulsive' clownfish are actually demonstrating to their mate that they're ready to release eggs - or if its a male, asking the female to do so. It's called 'shimmering'. Can anyone with some experience in breeding/mating clownfish help me out here? Is the jerking a sign of some mating procedure, or is it something I should be concerned about?

I really had no clue either.. Good thing about a futon is I just flipped the mattress over haha. Could have been worse. I would not advise anyone to run Radions at 100% over their tank ever... Unless you are trying to make fish and coral soup. Yea, I'm sorry to hear about your tank. I hope your last 2 fish make it. I just brought my clowns home last night and put them in my QT. Thanks for the input on the stand.

What kind of rock are you using? I just cycled my dry rock in a 30 gal Rubbermaid. It was the reef saver stuff they dig up inland in FL. All I did was throw it in the bucket, add some flow and some Dr. Tim's. The Dr. Tim's seemed to help. You just add the ammonia solution he provides as per his instructions. The rock should completely cycle in a couple weeks. I added some chaeto and a small LED light with a timer after the rock had cycled and now after 2 months my rocks are crawling with pods. After I added the chaeto, I switched to ghost feeding and cut out the ammonia solution. I wouldn't advise doing any water changes during the cycling process so the bacteria can multiply. That is unless your ammonia or nitrite get too high because that can stall the cycle. I started doing water changes after the cycle to get the nitrate down.

Hahaha I'm not sure I know what you're talking about... Your build thread definitely inspired some of my decisions. Brian did an awesome job with my stand. Thing is built like a tank, looks amazing, and gives me plenty of room, which is exactly what I wanted. I decided to go with a granite top and was able to get a pretty good deal on a remnant. Hey guys, so this is round 2 for me. I had started up a 90 gal in December, but a crack started to develop in the glass a couple weeks in and I made the decision to break it down. I used it as an excuse to change some things around in my setup and pretty much start over again. This time around I went with a 57 rimless and plan on doing a Bean Animal overflow as the tank is going next to my entertainment center and I want it to be as quiet as possible. I've pretty much collected all the equipment and materials I need for my new build including an awesome stand made by corsi1330. All that is left is for me to do is put it all together. I've had my rock cooking for over 2 months now and it is fully cycled with tons of pods running all over it. I had added in some chaeto from bbyatv a month ago and it came with lots of mini brittle stars and other goodies. Last week I set up my quarantine system after reading Mr. Saltwater Tank's No Nonsense Guide to QT and bought my first set of fish; a pair of Davinci clowns. More pictures and updates on the way!

I bought a Reef Dynamics INS135 for my 90 gal tank, but now I am downsizing to a 57 gal tank. There seems to be a lot of differing opinions on over skimming, or even whether or not it exists. Does anyone have any experience with putting an extra large skimmer in a small tank? The INS135 is rated up to 400 gal, but is said to be ideal for tanks 110-135.. I am reluctant to sell my skimmer as I bought it used and then figured out it was broken so I replaced the pump. I know I'm not going to get what I'd like to get for the skimmer by selling it, so I wanted to see if I could use it in my new system before I throw a couple hundred dollars down the toilet to replace it.

That is a pretty nifty design, sweet and simple. I have cross bracing in the middle of my tank underneath the bottom pane though and would like to have the overflow centered. Did you ever get slurping noises from a vortex created by the vertical pvc? I would imagine it would happen eventually if you kept cranking up the flow. As long as the pipes are far enough apart (height wise), I wouldn't think you would see this issue.

Looks good Aaron, you'll have to let me know how it turns out once you do a water test. How high did you raise the secondary standpipe?

Just realized I have my cracked 90 gal sitting in my garage. Going to use it as a crash test dummy to get a better feel for how the overflow works.

Never mind already answered my question in an earlier post. Judging by that rule of thumb, the 3 holes should fit safely inside the overflow box I mentioned earlier. I spaced them 5.5 inches apart and that still gives me 2.4 inches of clearance on each end of the box.

I really think that the only purpose of the elbows in the original design was the strainers he had cut into them. That's why I was going to go with the teeth. No plumbing would work but might get clogged constantly if you have stuff jumping into it.. How wide was your overflow box Alan? and how far apart did you space your holes? (Center to center) Do you live in Gaithersburg? If you're willing to lend it to me, I would gladly pick them up this weekend when I visit my girlfriend in Clarksburg. Do you have bits for 3/4" ABS as well? I didn't think about a wood template, but that is a great idea. I think I'd be too scared to do it free hand with the tilt and rotate method. Last thing I want is a pile of glass on the floor....
