I started a thread on TFT recently about black and white shots of our tanks here:

http://www.thereeftank.com/forums/f75/b-w-why-not-213436.html

There are some nice examples there, especially a few of the coral close ups.

Now I think it's a good idea to start one on WAMAS so we can each take a stab at playing w/ black and white photographs. We all love the colors that come from our tanks but, similar to other topics in photography like photojournalism or portraits, it's hard to take away the purity that come from black and white. When you take out (the distraction) of color, we can begin see the texture or even the negative or void spaces that our tanks and inhabitants create. Perhaps you will see your creations in a slightly different light and it may tell a different story after trying it out. My goal is to add something different to our shots, something that asks us to test our creativity as much as our technical (ie exposure or wb) skills.

Maybe this can be a POTM? If so, mods (Isaac), feel free to turn this thread into a POTM.

I will start by posting the same shot I posted in Isaac's thread. Will you play?

Cool idea! I really like some of those shots on that thread you linked!

Can look into it for the future, December and January are booked, will toss it up for a February idea.

Will have to mess around with some images over the holiday, but yes!

Thanks Isaac! I'm hoping others will show interest. I know it could take a while for this thread to get going since most people probably don't have stock shots of their tank/corals in B/W.

One more thing..I realized that a lot don't have post processing software like Photoshop or Lightroom to convert to b/w (unless your camera can expose in b/w to begin with) but you can use something like Picasa to do it for you. I am sure there are other free software's. If you own a Nikon, ViewNX can do it. I am sure Canon has it's own equivalent post processing software too.

neat idea. i'll play along shortly. and any photo warehouse offering will have sufficient an editor to remove the color saturation to make images b/w so folks should have no problem participating. look forward to the contributions!

Awesome, Marco! Looking forward to it.

Here's a b/w version of an old photo I took months ago which was originally posted in "color" here. I'll work on new shots after the feast!

This is a black and white version of a recent cell phone pic of my tank. The color version is a recent post in my build thread.

Would love to see other creative b/w shots.

Rubert looks even more menacing in that pic!

Really love that shot tomtom, the textures really show up nicely in grayscale.

Thanks guys! Those are some superman shrooms up front. The red on blue contrast really makes them look good in b&w.

Here's a shot of a slimer.

Bowie...nice shot. It has almost a microscopic look to it.

Tom, nice overall depth. The foreground really pulls you through to the background.

Marcos...wow..pucker up! How could you not want to kiss those lips! haha
