I ordered from BRS the Ocean Wonders Reef Epoxy.  When it arrived it was in a zip lock bay with two of these poaches. Contents say Potassium Chloride, why ?

I had ordered Reef epoxy before and they never came with any accompanying packaging.
Does any one know why these were packed with the Reef epoxy ?

After looking at the expiration date they seem to be past the date to sell them so they just threw them in the box to hand them out. Actually kind of nice of them to do that instead of throwing it away.

If you can't use them, pass them on to another reefer that can.

that should work for your refractometer as well shouldnt it? could be wrong but

Good question.  I might be able to use it after all.

mling, the stuff they sent you is not related to your epoxy order. It was either a mistake or, as Coral Hind speculated, a freebie.

Not necessarily and, depending upon what's actually in the package, probably not. Conductivity, refractive index, salinity, and specific gravity are all separate parameters. The targets that we strive for are not conversions of one another but are independent measurements (averages, actually) of "average" sea water taken at the surface. For example, I can make standard for a refractometer (which measures refractive index) from table salt and water, but it won't read 53 ms/cm on a conductivity meter, nor would it read right on a hydrometer (which measures specific gravity) either. This article is helps to sort out the concepts while providing directions to make standards for the various kinds of measuring devices. Note that the formula for each standard is slightly different. The reason for that is that simple table salt is used to make the various standards, rather than the complex salt mixture that makes up sea water.

I just checked and the expiration date is 2015. The only thing that I have that could use calibration would be my refractometer but it appears that it cannot be used for that. ,So if someone wants them, you can have it for free. ->

One thing to remember is that I live in Fair Lakes, if you don't know where that is then it is probably not worth your gas money to come get it.

PM me if you could use it.
