steveoutlaw July 20, 2013 July 20, 2013 Has anyone tried this on Corals? For the same price you get a tube about 3 times the Superglue Gel. It says it's solvent free and no VOCs.
lnevo July 28, 2013 July 28, 2013 I just bought some at the supermarket. Check the ingredients. If it's Cyanoacrylate based then you should be good.
steveoutlaw July 28, 2013 Author July 28, 2013 The ingredients don't mention Cyanoacrylate. It says it has Trimethoxysilyl Propylamine.
Coral Hind July 28, 2013 July 28, 2013 I would worry that the hardening time is too slow. You need something that sets up faster to secure the frag in time to put it back in the water.
zygote2k July 29, 2013 July 29, 2013 C'mon......no one? I don't want to be a guinea pig. breathe it in and tell us the effects 8)

Dave - What makes you think it won't harden as fast as Superglue? breathe it in and tell us the effects 8) Way ahead of you Rob!!
kjamaya July 29, 2013 July 29, 2013 Just go to the $1 store in Manassas by shoppers, 1 buck gets you a packet of 3.
Coral Hind July 29, 2013 July 29, 2013 Dave - What makes you think it won't harden as fast as Superglue? I read somewhere online that it took a while to set-up and never really hardened but always stayed kind of flexable. I would just give it a try on a frag plug with a piece of dead coral rubble. Try to glue it and then soak in a bowl of water to see what happens. I doubt the ingredients will be an issue with the tank, just don't know if the dry time is as good as super glue.

I haven't been able to find the Gel stuff at the $1 store, but thanks for the tip. I read somewhere online that it took a while to set-up and never really hardened but always stayed kind of flexable. Kevin Garrison July 29, 2013 July 29, 2013 Actually I prefer the loctite gel over the superglue gel, locktite sets a little faster once it hits the water and holds better. I have had superglue gel let go a day or two later. Loctite comes in a larger bottle (4g) than the little superglue tubes from the $1 store.
Coral Hind July 29, 2013 July 29, 2013 Since I am sitting in the cafeteria at NLM using their wi-fi I figured I'd look this up. Info on (3-aminopropyl)triethoxysilane: http://toxnet.nlm.nih.gov/cgi-bin/sis/search/a?dbs+hsdb:@term+@DOCNO+5767 However, such materials are likely to cause toxicity in aquatic species due to physical effects (encapsulation, blockage of gills). The APTES 96-hr LC50 is > 934 mg/L for freshwater fish (Brachydanio rerio). The 48-hr EC50 for APTES is = 331 mg/L for the water flea (Daphnia magna). The 72-hr EbC50 for freshwater green algae (Scenedesmus subspicatus) is 603 mg/L. There seems to be a risk but I doubt you will get those high concentration levels in your tank unless you are doing some large amounts of fragging. That's like 7 teaspoons of glue per gallon. Here is the sheet for cyanoacrylate ( super glue): http://toxnet.nlm.nih.gov/cgi-bin/sis/search/f?./temp/~odkrum:1 This is why super glue or cyanoacrylate is so good: Environmental Bioconcentration :Methyl 2-cyanoacrylate polymerizes rapidly on contact with moisture(1,2,3). Therefore, bioconcentration in aquatic organisms is not a relevant environmental process for this substance(SRC).
Der ABT July 29, 2013 July 29, 2013 +1 on the loktite, my favorite is the BSI IC gel that stuff is amazing but expensive for the tube. i think its 7 or 8 bucks for an 8oz tube. ...it sets up under water beautifully, hardens quickly, could actually hold a coral for 30-45 seconds and it would be solid enough to put in the tank, just very good stuff. i know you can order boxes of it that would probably make it cheaper but never really looked into it. Carla put together a group buy for some gel glue not too long ago, that glue was rediculously cheap and for the price hard to argue with...not my favorite gel but works well enough, just takes alittle longer to set up.

Origami July 29, 2013 July 29, 2013 I have no experience with this product, Steve. Here's the MSDS from Elmer's, though, if you haven't looked at it already. Among other things, it does have a slight vinegar odor when curing and an organic-cartridge respirator is recommended if chronically exposed to it (in an industrial setting maybe?). It's also a silica-type of product. In some ways, it sounds like it could be likened to a silicone sealant-like product. How long does it say it takes to cure?
Coral Hind July 29, 2013 July 29, 2013 Maybe it's time to do another group buy on glue. We should have done it before frag fest. since we are on the glue subject. This was the only thing they had left in stock at my Walmart so I thought I'd check it out... anyone use it? Gorilla Glue Gel http://www.gorillatough.com/index.php?page=super-glue-gel I have used the "Super Gel" and it works. The other Gorilla products, I wouldn't try. The "Super Gel" is basically the same as a Super Glue or other reef gel since the MSDS says it is composed of 86-100% cyanoacrylate.
Coral Hind July 29, 2013 July 29, 2013 How long does it say it takes to cure? According to Michael's website. CURE RATE & DRYING TIME: Glued objects will be ready to use in 24 hours; maximum strength in 3 days. http://www.michaels.com/Elmer's-Craft-Bond-Ultra-Stix-All/gc0215,default,pd.html I've read at other sites it set's in 10 -15 minutes but cures in 24 hours. I prefer cyanoacrylate that sets in about 1 minute.

I prefer cyanoacrylate that sets in about 1 minute. It really does sound like it's some kind of silicone sealant re-purposed to be an adhesive. Just an opinion. I prefer cyanacrylate, too. From my perspective, I only need enough to hold the coral in place until encrusting takes over. There's the added advantage of being able to readily free the frag until then, just in case you want to move it.
kjamaya July 29, 2013 July 29, 2013 (edited) Check out the Dollar Store at Bull Run Plaza off of Sudley. They always have it on stock. I haven't been able to find the Gel stuff at the $1 store, but thanks for the tip. Thanks Dave, I'll give it a shot. Edited July 29, 2013 by kjamaya
sachabballi reef July 29, 2013 July 29, 2013 Looks like this will only be good for sniffing!! We used to use Elmer's spread out on our hands to dry and then peel it off in one sheet . Kids love that trick...lol I know as soon as you finish reading this you're off to do it... Sent from my DROID RAZR using Tapatalk 2
