Water changes and more water changes....ugh. Ammonia levels in QT reached 2.0ppm yesterday. My poor mimic tang was very stressed.

Can hyposalinity cause abdominal bloating? My mimic tang was fine up until yesterday when it presented with rapid labored respirations and a distended abdomen. i thought the labored respirations was from the ammonia spike. I added amquel when I realized the ammonia spiked and did a large water change. There's zero ammonia now.

I added a couple of peas to its feed today thinking the distention could be from constipation, but It wont eat.

Anyone??? Your thoughts? This tang is not eating and its belly is bloated. I also need help getting the few fish I have left in my DT out. Is anyone available to stop by and help out?

I could try to come out Friday if you need help but I suck at catching fish.

Jan, I can possibly lend a hand some time this week after work.

I'm gettting very tired and stressed. My very healthy mimic tang, the largest and most active of them all, probably wont make it through the night. This fish didn't show any signs of anything. It was very healthy. Even though I've been using amquel and trying to keep up with water changes to avoid ammonia toxcitity it appears that when the ammonia spiked to 2ppm's the tang was the one severely affected. I've been trying to figure out what caused it develop dropsey. Looks like ammonia toxicity. http://www.fishchann...ith-dropsy.aspx

All the other fish are fine. They never showed any signs of distress.

I'm so sorry Jan. I can only imagine how you are feeling.... deep breath...you may lose a battle or two but you WILL win the war. I think some fish just can't deal with the stress of being moved and treated and out of the DT very well despite your amazing tenacity. It might be that fish carry all these diseases in them dormant and stress released them much like they say cancers etc are in all of us but may or may not ever become active in us.

I'm sending a very big hug to you and know I'm so sad you are going through this but i know that you, of all people, will persevere.

Keeping you in my thoughts and prayers!

Thanks. This fish died from ammonia poisoning. It was fine until the ammonia spiked.

Oh I am so sorry jan. But you are doing an amazing job with the other 29+ fish so keep that in mind. Its unrealistic to think zero casualties in this situation and you are doing amazing.

+1 to this! I just finished reading through this thread and think you are doing a phenomenal job. You are going way above and beyond what most people would do in a similar situation, and I salute you for it!

....The Genicanthus watanabei is completely healed and so is the Genicanthus Melanospilos that came with severe lymph and some other funky stuff. The GM is scarred but she's fine.

Only half the fish made it into QT. The rest stayed in the main DT and they all look just fine. I'm getting rid of 2 out of 5 GM. The rest of the fish are going back into the DT Thursday. I don't have the time or the energy to try and catch the rest.

QT is very time consuming. I've had to do 50% water changes every 3-5 days because of ammonia spikes. The absence of LR significantly reduces filtration.

It will take several hours to acclimate the fish in QT from 1.008 sg to my DT at 1.026 sg.

..with all the time and effort i put into curing my Genicanthus watanabei, she still died. She was cured of the ulcerations. She looked so majestic. I think I did not acclimate her long enough. I found her dead when I got back from New York last night. Bummer.

Sorry, Jan. So much effort and still this outcome. I'm sure it's disappointing. I hope the Manhattan Reefs frag swap was good to you, though.

Thanks, Tom. It was a bummer. Expensive fish too.

We met a lot of great people at the Manhattan fragswap. A good time had by all. The highlight for me was chatting with Paul B.

Thanks, Kim.
