turbo2oh February 13, 2013 February 13, 2013 Hi everyone, I'm planning to return to the hobby after a mulit-year hiatus. Previously I had a 29g reef tank but at the time I was moving quite often and moving the tank became quite a hassle. Now I should be stationary for awhile and would like to get a larger tank. I'm thinking 150 high would be perfect, but also considering 90g and a few in between. It will be on the 2nd floor but will be against a load bearing wall running perpendicular to the floor joists so hopefully it should be good. I'm also planning for a sump tank so I don't have any equipment hanging off of the display tank. I wanted to know if anyone has any advice for someone who's been very out of the loop for the last 5 years or so (I see LEDs are more common now?). Also, if anyone is selling or parting out an existing system that'd be perfect. I've been checking craigslist but haven't seen anything that fits what I'm looking for. Thanks! Phil
jimlin February 13, 2013 February 13, 2013 welcome back. moving is such a pain when it comes to aquariums which is why i have not bought anything bigger than a 75.
Coral Hind February 13, 2013 February 13, 2013 Welcome back! There have been a few changes to the hobby and it has actually gotten a good bit more expensive. Just take it slow and ask lots of questions. Check out peoples tanks and get some ideas. Good luck!
dave w February 14, 2013 February 14, 2013 Phil, I had been out of the hobby for 10 years before deciding to jump back in myself. I was amazed at the evolution of thought that has occurred, mostly by internet forums. You will find yourself up to speed very quickly. Keep looking around wamas, it seems every month someone is moving and decides its a good time to get out of the hobby for a while. I'd always recommend the largest tank your budget can handle, but try not to get too big for yourself. Because a system always ends up costing more than you thought it would.
turbo2oh February 14, 2013 Author February 14, 2013 Thanks Dave, I'm still torn on if I want the tank downstairs or upstairs. Downstairs I don't have to worry bout weight since its on a concrete slab, but I only have exactly 4ft to work with where I could put it (between a gas fireplace and the non-opening end of a sliding glass door). Upstairs I have more room but I'm a little concerned about having a huge tank on the 2nd story. Decisions decisions.. I definitely have some reading to do on here and reef-central.
smallreef February 19, 2013 February 19, 2013 a tank on BOTH floors!!! a long tank like a 150 really wont be a problem upstairs as long as its along an outside wall (or if your like me and in a townhouse along the wall that connects to next door since the basements are built with cinderblocks) Never had a problem with my 5ft long 150g on my second floor in my last condo....
Djplus1 August 13, 2013 August 13, 2013 Why is everyone posting to this all of a sudden? This is thread from February! But not to be rude, welcome back I guess!?
jason the filter freak August 16, 2013 August 16, 2013 ^ It's a hot thread? I dunno, Welcome back, from someone who's most likely bailing out
