smallville December 10, 2012 December 10, 2012 I placed an order with LiveAquaria and he, with 3 trapezia crabs and 1 unknown shrimp were all hosting my the bird's nest I received. I kept the crabs and shrimp, but I wasn't sure about the goby. He looks very similar to the yellow goby below, and is about the size of a nickel. Does anyone know if certain gobies will host in a bird's nest? He seemed very at home inside when I pulled him out, so I don't mind putting him in if I need to (though this tank is coral only). Also, anybody know about certain shrimp hosting in bird's nest? He's really small and 99% of the time I can barely see him, but he stays nested in the coral 100% of the time. And last, I hear a knocking noise in my coral only tank all the time now with the introduction of this bird's nest with it's 4+ creatures living in it. It sounds like something is tapping or knocking on the SPS with a metal butter knife... like a hollow echo. Any one know what this could be?
Coral Hind December 10, 2012 December 10, 2012 The knocking noise could be a pistol shrimp or mantis shrimp, even very small ones can make a lot of noise. Most of the small gobies like a citron will reside in a birdsnest. Because they like to sit in the same area looking out the coral will die in the area where they perch. Some people don't like seeing that but to me it is a natural thing. Watch the trapezia crabs as not all of them are coral safe. Some actually feed on the coral's tissue. Do you have any pictures you can post?
smallville December 14, 2012 Author December 14, 2012 Thanks for your input. It turns out I do have a pistol shirimp, or at least he appears to be one. Originally when I saw him his appendages looked equal in size, then the other day I finally caught another glimpse of him and it appears that one appendage is larger than the other. I do have some pictures but I need to get them off my phone. If you really want to see some, send me your e-mail address and I can forward from my phone. Thanks again.
Coral Hind December 18, 2012 December 18, 2012 smallville sent me some pics of the hitchhikers he got. It does look like a pistol shrimp and possible goby. pistol shrimp goby
Origami December 18, 2012 December 18, 2012 Cute. It does look like a small pistol and a camera-shy goby.
kjamaya December 18, 2012 December 18, 2012 Wow that's something else I have never seen a pistol shrimp that small before. I cant seem to see the goby but I imagine it is tiny as well. So cool if you think about it you prolly got the birdsnest for a lot cheaper then what you paid with the hitchhikers.
Coral Hind December 18, 2012 December 18, 2012 I would squirt some fine foods down into the coral every couple of days to make sure they are getting enough to eat.
Origami December 18, 2012 December 18, 2012 Circled area looks to be the head. The tail looks to be a little to the right. Not sure of the scale, but maybe 1/2" to 3/4" long would be my guess? What do you think?
Der ABT December 18, 2012 December 18, 2012 that is really cool for a hitch hiker, nice pick up..not sure if ive ever seen a goby that small
