SteveM August 18, 2012 Share August 18, 2012 I thought I would stop by and say hello to everyone. It's been a while since I have been on. I have moved to Florida and my wife and I are currently building a house in Parrish and I am including a 410 gal reef tank. The tank is 96x36x28 and will be viewable from 2 sides. This will be a long process as the house will not be done until around the end of November but I am looking for some feedback on the design and layout of my set up. Here is a list of some of the planned equipment: Skimmer

epleeds August 18, 2012 Share August 18, 2012 Steve. Good to see ur back on the boards. This is going to be a huge jump over the 110. Retirement must be nice.
Steve175 August 18, 2012 Share August 18, 2012 Plans do look great. I am sure you have planned to do so, but definitely a floor drain or 2 will be key. Might use waterproof/bathroom sheetrock for walls with marine paint on walls. Good ventilation of room will also be key.

I do have floor drains, one in the center of the roofm for "just in case" and one at the end of the sump for my water changes. The walls are green board and all the paint will be water proof. I also have an exhaust fan built into the ceiling. Thanks for asking about those things.
OldReefer August 18, 2012 Share August 18, 2012 Looks like a dream setup. The only thing I can add is that big tanks like that really benfit from ozone. You might want to sons under that. T

T I have thought about Ozone but honestly do not know anything about it. I would like to learn more about it. What's the plan for the two tanks above your sump? Looks amazing! Matt Those tanks are initially going to be quarantine tanks. Eventually I will turn one into a frag tank. I haven't decided on the sizes of the tanks yet. Thanks for asking about those things. there is something called DENSEARMOR which does NOT have any paper in it.. its alot more than green board but it will NEVER get moldy... just something to think about for the walls/ceiling... thats what I will be doing when we build next time... also.. do you have an exhaust fan being placed in there.. something like a whole house fan on a timer would really help to remove the humidity in the room and keep it cool... treesprite August 18, 2012 Share August 18, 2012 People are asking about venting and exhaust ... it looks from the picture of the frame that there is a good sized window in the room. It seems to me that most fish rooms do not have the big benefit of windows for venting and fresh air, so Steve you are lucky to have such a spot for your fish room. SteveM August 18, 2012 Author Share August 18, 2012 Yes, I do have a large window in the room that I will be able to open as needed. I also have an exhaust fan dedicated just for the tank room. I think that between the window and the vent I should be okay.
Coral Hind August 18, 2012 Share August 18, 2012 It's nice to see you posting again! I can't add much to that setup design, it looks like you have everything already covered. Why did you decide on the blueline pumps? You could cover the walls with FRP and then you wouldn't need to paint them at all. I would caulk/seal the bottom plate of the walls so any water spillage is kept in the room so it can go down the drain and not under the walls into the living area. I'm sure in a couple of years you have a TOTM again with this setup.

I really don't need anything to outrageous for the returns. All my flow is coming from the Vortec's. Just need something good enough for a good turnover of water. Coral Hind August 19, 2012 Share August 19, 2012 With the chiller being next to the pumps you are going to have a lot of extra heat in that area. Can the chiller be moved to the other end of the tank? Maybe add a fan. If the heat builds up there the pumps will run hotter and the chiller will not run efficiently. I can also add a fan. I didn't think about the heat build up, I've never had to run a chiller before. I'm not even sure I am going to need one on this tank with the LED lighting but I don't want to take the chance. I'm hoping the chiller won't have to run very often. Thanks for pointing that out.
