Hey Everyone,

My name is Adam and I'm in the process of moving to the Germantown, MD area (tank and all). I've been an active member of Delaware Valley Reef Club (DVRC) for several years now, but it's getting way too far for me to still participate with them. I stopped in to Congressional Aquariums last week and Ken pointed me this way. I'm really happy to find a local club.

A bit of background on me:

I've been into saltwater for almost 20 years. I had my first tank with my father when I was 10. I started back up again in 2007 and have been going strong since. I currently have a 75g reef ready tank lit by my DIY LED lighting fixture. I haven't kept all that much in the way of coral since we move around a fair bit (work). Right now I have a few different SPS, some zoas, acans and a couple of clams. Fish list is short: kole tang, 2 PJ cardinals, hoeven's wrasse, perc. clown, darwin clown.

I have some pretty good information on everything on my website if you're interested: http://www.engineersreef.com

Adam

Welcome, Adam!

Your saltwater background sounds very similar to mine! I noticed on your page that you dive, a group of us are meeting at the local quarry this weekend if you are interested. I think you'll find some friendly, knowledgable folks around here (and yes, the $20 membership fee is worth it... even for the 20+ year SW veterans).

Chad

Thanks Chad!

I'm still living up in Towson for the rest of the month, but diving sounds fantastic! Where is the local quarry? I was actually certified at Dutch Springs in Bethlehem, PA. Talk about COLD, 54 degrees at 25' with surface temps of 85.

^those conditions sound familiar! Though I don't think the surface temps are that high at Millbrook yet. The quarry is about 45 minute west of DC (which would be a bit of a drive from Towson), it'll be fun, though!

I don't know if I've warmed up from Dutch yet! <shudder> I'm going to have to pass on this trip, but I'm definitely interested in the future. I've got a trip to Hawaii next month and I'm hoping to get a least one day in of diving.

Welcome to WAMAS!!

Thanks!

Hey, welcome to the club.

I lol'd at the "I'd frag that" t-shirt listed on your website

Welcome to the club. Have fun living in Towson for another month. I went to college there. Lot's of good nightlife.

Thanks. We really like it up here. It will be nice to be closer to DC though. We're total foodies and we're excited for all of the new restaurants we can go to.

Haha, thanks! I got tired of not finding any fun reefing shirts, so I made a couple :) You can always tell who is a reefer and who isn't when you wear it. If you get a smile when they read it, they're in the know. If you get a confused look, they clearly aren't.

I should have been more specific about that... we like to try off the beaten path type places and international foods. Not so much the expensive side of things.

haha, well in that case ignore every place I listed. They are all very good though.

Not too much international food in Baltimore.

If you like Sushi check out Sushi Hana in Towson: http://www.sushihanatowson.com/

They are the best sushi around imo.

Also, Egyptian Pizza in Belvedere Square is a neat spot. Service is "ok" but some interesting food.

It's all good! I appreciate the tips none-the-less.

We've been to Sushi Hana, not great, but pretty good for the area.

Haven't been to Egyptian Pizza, we'll have to check that out.

Welcome soon to be neighbor!

BTW, have you been to San Sushi in Townson? IMO it's the best Sushi in that area. They also have a Thai's restaurant interconnected to it.

Yep, we've been there. A weird spot if I do say so... 1/3 Thai restaurant, 1/3 sushi house, 1/3 dive bar. We were very confused when we walked in and were seated in a different restaurant than we walked into. We really like the cuban place next door and Burger Bros the next block up.

Welcome Aboard!

Awesome folks here on Wamas.

I think there's a meeting coming up in July, hope you can join us!

Welcome, Adam. I look forward to hearing more from you. I'm not an engineer myself, but always find you guys to be good conversation partners for my over-analytical, break it down to the molecular/evolutionary level style of rants.

As far as food goes in g-town, your options for ethnic palette pleasers is a bit sparse. Royal Bagel Bakery at 118 and Middlebrook is deliciously rich, though. The best pho around (in my opinion) is, on the west side of the county - 'Pho 95' - rockville, 'Richie Center', NW corner of the intersection 1st st and 355, and, on the east side - 'Pho Hiep Hoa' - wheaton, 1 block east of the intersection of University ave and Georgia ave on the north side.

As far as other ethnicities of food go, you'll want to venture into the district and northern virginia.

Again, I look forward to hearing more from you. I like the site.

Awesome! We'll be moved in after July 1, so I should hopefully be able to come and meet up.

Thanks for the welcome and the tips! In some ways I am very much the stereotypical engineer. I'd like to think I'm on the more outgoing extreme than most though ;)

I think we'll be venturing into the city fairly often for food finds. My absolute must find is a good Korean restaurant. Really slim pickings here.

EDIT: Wogga.... are you holding a lion in your picture?

yup. a cub. can't remember the exact age but he was about 50-60lbs and his paws were almost the size of my hand when stretched out. It was like a giant puppy.

Annondale is your place. Try the Honey Pig - 24 hour AWESOME Korean BBQ. There are a lot of Korean options in Annondale, but this one is my favorite.

wogga... very cool.

Chad:

I was told about Honey Pig, but haven't made the ride yet. My friend owns a Korean restaurant in NJ and it is RIDICULOUSLY good. Every time I drive up there I have to stop and get as much as I can.
