Fishie February 26, 2012 February 26, 2012 I havean API ca test kit... Now I need to start measuring Alk kh... And mag Is the API ok or should I go with salifert or something else.
Coral Hind February 26, 2012 February 26, 2012 I have been using the API Cal and Alk test kits for many years. I have compared them to the other more costly kits and they were close enough that for me the cost wasn't worth it.
Coral Hind February 26, 2012 February 26, 2012 If you want to test Mag you will need to use something other then API brand, they don't make a Mag one.
Origami February 26, 2012 February 26, 2012 API makes a decent alk test kit. It's inexpensive and provides value. I've only had one kit that's been off over the years and it reported a higher alk than was the case. It pays to have an alkalinity standard to test it against in order to avoid this problem. When this happens, it's good enough just to adjust the amount of water your testing to make an errant test kit accurate again. I have no issues with their calcium kit either. I use Seachem for magnesium and have been satisfied. I use Salifert, too.
DaveS February 26, 2012 February 26, 2012 I use API for Ca and Alk. I know it's not the most precise but given that I'm not trying to keep my Ca or Alk at an exact value but within a range, it's close enough.

Bought a salifert kit for each of these test and the difference was minimal. On the other hand, I do not trust APIs nitrate and phosphate test. Had one kit misread on both.
