LanglandJoshua July 21, 2011 July 21, 2011 I started with a 55 gallon tank, after an unexpected leak at 3AM on a Sunday morning I took the system down. By the next day I had a 75 gallon tank. This upgrade was much better planned. I started bulking up on rock, and over time had the 75 hugely full. Now I just need to put the sides up, get another 400W 10K MH light, and MP40ES. Enough story time, here is the tank. After I added a couple pipes to guide the water into my sump. Before I transferred everything after most stuff was tranferred After moving the tank into the final position My foxface expressing its protest to the move! lights out The big guy(engineer goby) came out for feeding time! My new Armagedon Zoas Finally the entire tank shot, still needs the siding. But we are debating about the final stain.
tpallas July 21, 2011 July 21, 2011 Wow....how did you move that tank back after it was full of water & rock??
LanglandJoshua July 21, 2011 Author July 21, 2011 Thanks guys, we dumped water into the 75 gal tank, and a 20 long. We left about 15-20 in, and pulled out over 100lbs of rock. Then my father and I lifted it by the supports directly under the tank. It was sketchy, but went well. Unfortunately with the way everything was we couldn't easily build it in the final resting place. So brute force won the day, something I'm sure a Marine would understand...*ahem* *Braden* :-)
Swimboy123 July 21, 2011 July 21, 2011 Understood and trust me, there's been a bit of brute force on my build as well!
LanglandJoshua July 21, 2011 Author July 21, 2011 Haha, please don't tell me you sharpened the sides of the tank and used a door breaching kick...that wont end well for anyone!
BowieReefer84 July 21, 2011 July 21, 2011 (edited) Your "sustem" looks nice. Edited July 21, 2011 by BowieReefer84
LanglandJoshua July 22, 2011 Author July 22, 2011 (edited) 60"X30"21" custom acrylic, I got it from L8 2 RISE. It fits beautifully, my corner is 65"X60". I have 5" to spare from the wall. The hood comes just high enough that it wastes no space, yet I can still squeeze in there to adjust the lights. I am planning on setting up 5gal bucket for a water reservoir for the ATO, rotifer, phyto cultures, with a 30-40 gal hospital tank. All under the stand! Might be a bit ambitious, but we will see. *note, my keyboard is skipping keys. I press fully, but the don't show, so I might miss typo or two. Edited July 22, 2011 by LanglandJoshua
LanglandJoshua July 22, 2011 Author July 22, 2011 Thanks, here are some pics of my coral. From my new phone the Droid Charge. So much better than the crap shoot of my Envy2... Got these clowns from Anthony(Fazio92 way back when...) One of a forest of Kenya Tree Another Zoa, don't know the name. But its larger than my eagle eyes, and looks nice. A frag of my Halloween Chalice that I have growing out onto a rock. Saved this SPS from some rubble that I got from L8 2 RISE, thanks again for the stuff. I still dont know its name Some xenia I saved again from L8 2 RISE's rock. I almost made it base rock But Ive already seen signs of growth. Tons of Kenya tree Montipora I salvaged from another members rock. One of my 4 GBTA's, I am selling two An RBTA I plan to split as soon as I have my refugium cleared out, and a light for it. NGSP(Neon Green Star Polyp) The small piece of NGSP I am selling now More mushrooms! My acan The mother piece of Halloween Chalice Close up Yellow Zoas, not sure how common these are. I cant find them on any sites. More Yellow Zoas
BowieReefer84 July 22, 2011 July 22, 2011 Yellow Polyps -> http://www.pacificeastaquaculture.com/Yellow-Polyps-*-WYSIWYG-X-JL1354-Prodview.html I really like the dimensions. Why are you using 400 watt halides? at 21" and those dimensions two 250watts would be perfect would some nice reflectors. Maybe a couple t5 or vho in the front and back if you wanted...
LanglandJoshua July 22, 2011 Author July 22, 2011 Ty for the link, I love all the swim space. My clowns went from a 20 gal frag tank, to this and are checking everything out! I was feeling out what a 400W 10k would do, its ok. But your right. I think that when I order my next light I will switch to 250's thats why I got the ballast I did. I can switch betweenthe two. Until I like the result.
BowieReefer84 July 22, 2011 July 22, 2011 My goal is to get a 120 when I move out of this condo at some point. 48x24. I want to run two 250 moguls This is what I want 2 of these http://www.bulkreefsupply.com/store/products/lighting/metal-halide-aquarium-lighting/metal-halide-reflectors-sockets-and-plugs/sunlight-supply-lumen-max-elite-mogul-fixture.html 2 of these http://www.bulkreefsupply.com/store/products/lighting/metal-halide-aquarium-lighting/metal-halide-ballasts/lumatek-dimmable-250w-400w-electronic-remote-ballast.html and 20k radiums I hear the 400 watts put out a LOT of heat as well... Do you have a chiller?
LanglandJoshua July 22, 2011 Author July 22, 2011 no, just a fan after 5-7 hours my tank is at 80 degrees. I have a fan keeping it down to about 79. But that is a major factor for me. If the 250's put out less, than my heater might actually have something to do....also that is the setup I have lol. Except the 400W 10K. I really want the coral growth. So I will probably get a 250W 10k, maybe 14k. The crazy thing is, that overnight it still holds temp. Even in a 65 degree house...I think I need a BIGGER FAN! BTW, if you can fit a 120. Then you should be able to fit this to. Although it is custom, I think you could get similar. That was my justification . Just remember, if yo get something smaller than you really want or can handle. Then you are doomed to rebuild later...unless you like the build which I LOVE!
L8 2 RISE July 22, 2011 July 22, 2011 Looks great! The green thing is a green cap, there was a rock that I gave you that was covered in it, but you may have accidentally used it as base rock because it wasn't a very special rock... the stuff grows really fast. The yellow polyps also grow really fast and you'll probably end up with a forrest of them similar to how fast the kenya tree spreads! I went with 250's on this tank because it is pretty shallow- I'd just suggest some 250's with high quality reflectors when you get around to it. Unfortunately I was never able to upgrade my reflectors (the ones you saw). I originally planned on 400's so still have ballasts for them, but changed my mind later. Tank looks great! Looking forward to seeing how it goes!
LanglandJoshua July 22, 2011 Author July 22, 2011 Lol, I thought it might be a monti. Thanks, and that is unfortunate. Its probably dead already. It was hard to look at everything as close as I'd like. I will show you a side pic. You can see just how much of the tank is all rock.
Swimboy123 July 22, 2011 July 22, 2011 I saw this tank at Sam's house and I don't think I would go with the 400's on this tank. I had four 400W halides on a 30" deep tank and I some of my corals got UV burns. Just re-evaluate to make sure that is what you really want.
LanglandJoshua July 22, 2011 Author July 22, 2011 These bulbs actually have a coating on them to hold back the UV, or so bulk reef supply claims. But I wanted to feel it out, which I think I said in a previous post. I also mentioned that I will be swapping out to 250W lights. Which is why I got the ballast I did. I knew it was probably overkill, unfortunately I was right. So were you guys. Not debating, just learning by doing.
GraffitiSpotCorals July 23, 2011 July 23, 2011 Looks like you have kept busy since last time I was over there! Hope it all comes together well.
LanglandJoshua July 24, 2011 Author July 24, 2011 I am planning in a pink tailed trigger. So it will be neat, with a later pair of mandarins. As well as 8 peppermint shrimp a cleaner shrimp. It will be colorful. But I need my RKE to replace the RKL that got fried with water. Then I promise I can set up the new ATO.
Xler8n July 24, 2011 July 24, 2011 Ive read that there is not much difference in 250 watt vs 400 watt. Definitely more heat. I have (2) 150watts Phoenix bulbs 5" off the water on my 75 gallon (21" high) and it always stays at 79 with a fan. Trying to get my hands on the par meter to see what it reads because thats all that matters. Your tank looks great though.
LanglandJoshua July 24, 2011 Author July 24, 2011 I plan on 250's just for the heat. But if I get a chiller. I may try 400's just because its funny, I have zoas that are fully open in the top 4-10" of water...they aren't burned. So I'm finding that the lighting needs are more to what the individual zoa has adapted to. When I do the 400's, I'll see if I can get a PAR meter and show my results. That will be between what the corals behavior says and what the "conventional" lighting/ coral arrangement are. I would not be surprised to just back it up lol.
LanglandJoshua July 24, 2011 Author July 24, 2011 Hey, btw speaking of the controller I mentioned to piper. That is actually why I am selling some of my corals to cover it. So if anyone wants a GBTA, I have one more and several zoas!
