treesprite May 11, 2011 May 11, 2011 Seems like it's getting more popular to dose vodka while dosing prodibio, so I was thinking about it. My question is, does anyone know if the dosage of vodka should be any lower when used with Prodibio than when using vodka by itself?
BowieReefer84 May 11, 2011 May 11, 2011 When using Prodibio there are many different "types" for lack of a better term. I am assuming you are refering to dosing vodka while using Prodibio Biodigest. If sticking 100% to Prodibio methodology you would use Prodibio Bioptim in conjuction with the Biodigest. I do not think you would want to use both those products AND vodka. I could be wrong, but that would be a LOT of dosing. Also, you must add nutrients b/c this method of dosing will strip your water clean. I am facing this right now, and have stopped with the Prodibio. If you have high nitrates then this would work better for you, than starting with an already "clean" tank imo. Here is a good read on things, even though it is old http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1520596
trockafella May 11, 2011 May 11, 2011 Its getting more popular bc (ALL IN IMO) people are looking for the "easy way".. Why not stop all the dosing and use more natural means of filtration.. A lot of people seem to use these to "fix" there nitrate/phosphate etc issues, instead of correcting the problem.. How were people able to keep reef tanks before all of these super dosing chemicals came out???????? Oh yeah, they had to put forth the effort to keep up there tank... All a big waste of money!!! Again, just my opinion, and yes its worth exactly what you paid for it..
Big Country May 11, 2011 May 11, 2011 I'LL BUY THAT FOR A DOLLAR I'll buy into that, I cut down on alot of the stuff that I was dosing, changed to a different salt and started keeping up better with my water changes and guess what my SPS started looking better. Keeping my fingers crossed

Keeping my fingers crossed I agree, good tank husbandry is the best way to grow corals.!
beatle May 12, 2011 May 12, 2011 That qoute always reminds me of Robocop.!! Super Smash TV for me: I don't dose anything, but there's still more than one way to skin the cat. It's actually easier most of the time to not dose.
overklok May 12, 2011 May 12, 2011 Simple is best in my opinion. A big skimmer, water changes, and a well functioning RO unit are essential.
treesprite May 13, 2011 Author May 13, 2011 I'm just using biodigest. You folks are not answering my question! So while I could respond with reasonable answers, I will not since it's not what I asked.
F&Fmgr May 13, 2011 May 13, 2011 you could use vodka, but the bioptim is not justa carbon source...also has traceminerals and vitamins to serve as a catalyst for the bacteria in biodigest.
rocko918 May 13, 2011 May 13, 2011 Forrest - IMHO i don't think you need to be dosing anything for your tank. I don't think you have the demand with the corals you have. Keep it simple. again this is just 1 mans opinion.
silverspringnano May 13, 2011 May 13, 2011 Wow, ask a question and then pull up a soap box. However, in fairness, your question is a little vague since Prodibio makes a line of products and you did not specify which one(s) you are using. Is it the biodigest? In which case, to answer your question specifically, since the point of the Biodigest is to diversify the bacteria strains and has nothing to do with the carbon dosing itself per se, then I would suggest that no, you would not alter the dosing amount of the vodka. If however, your are using Bioptim as a previous poster suggested, this product acts as the carbon source and therefore, vodka would be redundant and unnecessary.
treesprite May 14, 2011 Author May 14, 2011 Some people use biodigest and use vodka instead of whatever that other Prodibio product is to feed the bacteria. I just wanted to try doing it because I have nitrate again due to not having been able to do regular water changes after my accident (can do them now, thank goodness).
