I am interested on mag dosage and to see how ml your cube can handle and at what rate. Thanks. I don't plan on automating mag. I just dose some Kent Mag maybe twice a month or so. It doesn't drop fast at all. I just follow the directions on the bottle.
BowieReefer84 May 11, 2011 Author Share May 11, 2011 Opened a flickr account for pictures. Lot easier than uploading to wamas, and don't have to worry about deleting them for space. BowieReefer84 May 19, 2011 Author Share May 19, 2011 Received an order from BRS including a DA Reefkeeper lite to setup with my doser pumps. Also, going to put the heater on the controller with the temp probe. Trying to decide what to use the 4th port with? Any ideas? Also, added 1/3 cup Pellet GFO in a mesh bag per the calculator on the BRS website. Hoping to bring phosphates down lower.

BowieReefer84 May 27, 2011 Author Share May 27, 2011 On May 12th I tested my phosphates and they were 34 on the hanna ulr which is .104 Today I tested again (have not done any water changes since the 12th) and got a reading of 22 which is .067 I added 1/3 cup BRS pellet GFO in a bag, and put it in the back chamber. Seems to be working well. I plan on getting a water change completed this weekend. Nitrates are b/t 5-10 on salifert right now. Alk is steady right around 8 on the salifert as well. I am happy with the results of the GFO without even using a reactor.

BowieReefer84 July 14, 2011 Author Share July 14, 2011 Nice, love the SPS gowth you're getting. Thanks! The montiporas are doing great. It is the Acropora that do not really grow. I am not adding any acro's at this point. Birdsnest are good as well.

BowieReefer84 September 27, 2011 Author Share September 27, 2011 (edited) Tank is looking great! What are you feeding your harlequins? I only have one harlequin. I just picked it up from house of tropicals for $35. The shrimp was feeding when I got it, and they packed it with the starfish leg. It continued to eat during acclimation even. I have a lot of asterina starfish at this time I want to get rid of. They didn't seem to be causing any issues, but the population has been steadily increasing. Once the asterina are gone I will supplement with some starfish legs. I have a friend who works at a fishstore, and he always throws a starfish in with the harlequins they have in stock to help them out. I will try to work something out where I get a piece every now and than. Or if I can get it out of the tank I would take it back to the store or trade it. Not sure how easy that would be to accomplish. Edited September 27, 2011 by BowieReefer84
Chad September 27, 2011 Share September 27, 2011 Mike, you are getting great growth, congrats! I am trying to compare color before and after your LED change-out, I think it is better (like looking at the green polypled monti at the top of your rock structure, the early pictures the base color is sort of a deep, reddish brown, and the latest picture is is a much lighter pink-orange color. How do you like the difference?

How do you like the difference? Thanks, things have finally come around. No more STN for my acro's. I honestly can't tell a dramatic difference after swapping the led's, but there is a subtle improvement. I do believe that the added warm whites, blues, and neutral whites do help the all around look.
BowieReefer84 September 27, 2011 Author Share September 27, 2011 (edited) Chad, are you talking about the sunset montipora? Came from Erics T5 lit tank. P1010877 by mteske1, on Flickr Keep in mind I am battling high phosphates at this time and nitrates are around 10. I expect even better color when I get those under control with some water changes... Chad September 27, 2011 Share September 27, 2011 Yes, that is the one I was talking about. It is easier to see all in one post Actually, now that I am looking closer, the last picture actually looks bluer than the previous picture, but definitely a lighter, pinker base. It is easier to see all in one post Actually, now that I am looking closer, the last picture actually looks bluer than the previous picture, but definitely a lighter, pinker base. It is bluer because I have dimmers, and I constantly play with them. Also, I don't always get the white balance on my camera correct. Trust me, the overall look of the tank is not that blue when they are powered equally. None of those pictures are truly accurate to be honest . BUT, you can get an idea. SunWyrm September 27, 2011 Share September 27, 2011 Harlequins are slow movers and pretty easy to catch with your hand. Don't use a net as it can get stuck and be very gentle with them. If you keep it you should really see about getting it a mate (catch it and correctly determine your harle's sex first), they help each other with molts by pinching their mate's old molt off. Plus they're together 100% of the time. It's pretty neat to watch.

It didn't occur to me that having a pair would benefit them. Hopefully the shrimp will be ok solo. Also, thanks for letting me know they move slow. My old fire shrimp was FAST. The guy at the store used a net...
SunWyrm September 28, 2011 Share September 28, 2011 He should be fine unless he has a bad molt, but that's nature and can happen to any shrimp, mated or no. Crazy that they had 4 together though as the females don't like to share their males and it can lead to bad fighting. And a net isn't horribly bad, as long as he doesn't get stuck. Mine got stuck and scared me half to death as I had to pry his little leg out, ended up fine though. Best of luck to your little guy, seems like you take great care of him.
