Coral Hind May 10, 2010 May 10, 2010 I was there last week and there were stilll hundreds of fish. There did seem to be less corals then normal, especially LPS.

Incredible Corals May 10, 2010 May 10, 2010 Lots if variety last time I was there. I think QT is a must tho. Ron What is this place all about? Do all their corals have bugs or something?
extreme_tooth_decay May 10, 2010 May 10, 2010 (edited) Is it worth the trip? You'll get wildly different opinions. You should really check it out yourself and make your own decision. Some people think the place seems dirty and do not like it (I have tested their water, and it was very clean). Others do not like it because some of the fish are in small containers...there are people who hate the place as if it is their religion for some reason. I like the place because they have a greater selection than any other LFS, by a long, long way. From mantis shrimp to different types of cow fish, pinecone fish gem tangs dragon eels, nautilus...you just never know what you will see there. It has been my favorite LFS for a long time. tim Edited May 10, 2010 by extreme_tooth_decay
trockafella May 10, 2010 Author May 10, 2010 Just got back.. Didnt find what I was in search of, but that had lots of cool stuff.. Tons of exotic fish, beautiful wrasses, 2 nice comets (marine betta), and they did seem to have a plenty of lps, maybe not as much as before, but they had some really nice pieces.. They had a few beautiful elegance corals, some really cool shrooms, and lots of things that I have on clue what they are.. Unfortunately, and this is the reason I dont like roozens, you can never get an honest price.. I printed out there price list, and all the fish I asked about were double what it says, I asked why the difference, they said it was an old price list, wow, now that is some inflation.. I think everyone should go there bc you will see some really cool stuff and can get some show size pieces, but that place frustrates me bc of the BS you have to deal with.. Not to mention the dumby ( not z germans) in the fish dept has no idea what anything is, which makes you wonder how he knows the prices..
onux20 May 10, 2010 May 10, 2010 What is this place all about? Do all their corals have bugs or something? They carry a wide assortment of fish and some nice coral. Some might question their husbandry practices. (and mine) I dont have a Qt tank and paid the price for it. So I just say to QT everything.
extreme_tooth_decay May 10, 2010 May 10, 2010 (edited) The pricing situation can be irritating, and can depend on many factors, including whether the guy is in a good mood, whether he knows you, etc...I often just decline when I do not like the price (like at any other LFS) But, in general, I find the prices on the same things fairly consistent from trip to trip. I often guess the exact price before Jos tells me the price (I usually try to deal with Jos). Most corals are sold by size. 38/48/58 are common prices for small, med, large rocks for common corals. Some fish as well. I know for a long time their going price for a small-ish achilles tank was either $38 or $48. That was a few years ago, but I could never find one elsewhere for under $100. And yes, it lived. Edited May 10, 2010 by extreme_tooth_decay
trockafella May 10, 2010 Author May 10, 2010 Jos was busy, and I much rather prefer to him, but I went on my lunch break and was pressed for time.. I was ok with most of the coral prices, but some of the fish prices, the guy was lookin at it goin, hmmmmmmmmm, hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm, hmmmmmmmmmmmm, $80.. If your gonna BS me, try and sell it a little better.. I will go back and see Jos next time.. *Seriously, if youve never been, make the trip, whether you like it or hate it there, its worth seeing.. I did think everything looked good and healthy..
surf&turf May 10, 2010 May 10, 2010 Thats what I like about LFS that post the prices on the tanks. At least you have an idea of what the fish/coral costs.

Bad thing about Roozens, they could care less if you come back.. Certainly not the friendliest of people.. Not like all of our sponsors, who pride themselves on great customer service, and they do an excellent job of it..
mchippo May 11, 2010 May 11, 2010 It's an experience everyone should try at least once and then make up your own mind whether you like or dislike the place. I have had great luck (3 Blue Assessors for $58.00 ea, all lived) and bad (Small Blue Hippo Tang priced at $88.00 in a "Pull the price out of my Ars" moment from one of the non-Germans). The set up (a series of green houses), tank stands (wood that looks as if it has weathered a 1000 Nor'Easters), filter systems (I have no idea if they have them), live rock ponds, gravel/dirt floors makes the trip to Roozen's at least one time worth it. They do get fish you never see anywhere else, although I wish they would get Gem Tangs again as I would expect their prices would be less than what I have seen them for over the Internet. You do look at the tanks and atmosphere and feel like you should quaranteen. Some of the tanks have detritus, expended rubble, snail shells 6 to 8 inches deep, and mystery stuff that is truely scary and makes you ask "What might be living down there." I have never seen a good coral selection the 3 - 4 times I have been there, but I just may have bad timing....JMHO...Dave
SkiCurtis May 11, 2010 May 11, 2010 [Not to mention the dumby ( not z germans) in the fish dept has no idea what anything is, which makes you wonder how he knows the prices.. Those guys are from holland. This is my local LFS in my area and I used to live like 10mins from them.I have bought from them for 20 years and they could care less if I come back as well ... they are known for there fish selection, but QT is a must!
extreme_tooth_decay May 11, 2010 May 11, 2010 they could care less if I come back as well Same here, heh. And I'm fine with it. I think customer service is greatly overrated in LFS. I don't go to LFS to make friends to hang out with. Most of the people who work in them are weirdos. Not to mention the people who shop in them. I go there to buy fish and corals. Any store that can provide more selection gets my business. That is why I pretty much only go to Roozens and That Fish Place nowadays.
darkcirca May 11, 2010 May 11, 2010 I've been once and don't think I'll be going back. I like to at least get some respect when I go to an LFS, and not just hear crap from people that work there. I tend to go up to That Pet Place a few times a year (family is near Philly, just make the trek on the way back). I've got reptiles as well, and their prices (especially on the anniversary sale) are pretty good.
SkiCurtis May 11, 2010 May 11, 2010 (edited) Not to bash those guys but they like to keep there customers dumb, unlike some of the other LFS I've been to. Like BRK, the aqua co,Mr Coral etc those guys help you with good advice. I have spent $1,000's over the 20 years there and still do not get any bones or hand outs or even any respect, but for me no worry's just like tooth decay said no biggie.we are a bunch of weird peeps anyway. At least I do not hear Larry saying its more expensive because it comes from the "Deep water" (Good one). Those guys are Making all there Money from there Turf trust fertilizer they have the patent for, and it is the best stuff you can put on your lawn, its just very expensive.so if you want the best lawn thats the s#$T.
