TonyInVa November 14, 2009 Author November 14, 2009 +1 It does look like internals. when I picked it up, some broke off. And yes it is alive.
TonyInVa November 15, 2009 Author November 15, 2009 No dusters missing. I did a google search "stuff coming out of linkia starfish" and "starfish guts" several people have posted the same question in other forums, but with no good answer.
Origami November 15, 2009 November 15, 2009 (edited) No dusters missing. I did a google search "stuff coming out of linkia starfish" and "starfish guts" several people have posted the same question in other forums, but with no good answer. Two similar pictures can be found here also: http://www.wetwebmedia.com/linckiadisfaqs.htm Two different speculative answers are given, too. One says it might be dying, while the other speculates that it may be expelling waste. I just skimmed the pictures and the localized text. Unfortunately, nobody seemed to follow up on how their star fared afterward. At least you'll be able to follow up with this post and let us know what you find out.... http://www.saltwaterfish.com/vb/showthread.php?t=364892 It could also just be part of the digestive tract of the star. Some sites say that the expulsion of guts may be a sign of stress. Since seastars can regenerate their guts, it may survive this. It looks like you'll just have to wait and see.
