Happyfeet October 9, 2009 October 9, 2009 I'm trying to decide on a stocklist. I've been reading up on Chromis for schooling fish. I like the way Green Chromis look, but I've read that they may turn aggressive and kill Chromis in the school until only 1 is left. Anyone have any experience with Green Chromis? My other choice is Blue Reef Chromis, but I plan to get another fish thats pretty close to that shade of blue. anyone have experience with either of these two fish?

I've had 7 at once, that dwindled to 0, then I tried again with 5, which also dwindled to 0 over time. I suppose they are cheap enough that you can just add a new school after they're all gone? I've read online that they like to be fed at least 3 times a day, and if you did that, it would lower their aggression and maybe prevent the disappearing problem? I've never tried it, (and I only fed mine once per day). FWIW. Edited October 11, 2009 by Ryan S

The larger ones can be aggressive towards the smaller ones - chasing them around a bit; but none of mine have killed one another. I have the same 6 chromises that have been in my 240 for the last 2 years. bob
Sharkey18 October 11, 2009 October 11, 2009 I bought five green chromis. Within a few weeks I had one. He's doing fine. Laura
Steve175 October 12, 2009 October 12, 2009 Same here: have added 2 separate 5-7 schools of chromis over the years: always ended up with only one - the biggest one. Have actually been witness to the chromi-on-chromi violence - not pretty. Have now sworn them off although now that I've a bigger tank, would like to know if others have had a similar experience to bob.
DDiver October 12, 2009 October 12, 2009 Chromis suck. was gonna say the exact same thing...I had 7 and now only 1...they really do suck..u want nice schooling fish..longspine cardinals are the only way to go...Jmo
dmatt56 October 12, 2009 October 12, 2009 I currently have 3 Chromis. One is definitely dominant, but he hasn't killed the other two yet. However, I've only had them a couple months.

L8 2 RISE October 13, 2009 October 13, 2009 I'm sory, but I never have, and doubt I ever will see a TRUE school of anthias in a home aquarium. They just swim around like any other fish, and really don't "school". The only fish that will school in pretty much any home aquarium are cardinals. Chromis do occassionally in LARGE tanks, but not in any tank. That's not to say I don't LOVE anthias and think every aquarium should have a few, but they don't school.
DJBoy98 October 13, 2009 October 13, 2009 I had 5 Chromis and 6 months later.. there's 2 left. I had 3 Blue eye Cardinal and there's still 3 left. They stick together most of the time but they don't swim all over. Look into Anthias but you need to feed them often. My was picky eaters so all they ate were Mysis.

I've read that Anthias need immaculate water conditions to do well. I think I may try Chromis, since they are cheap, while my tank matures.
ryanls5 October 13, 2009 October 13, 2009 I tend to believe that chromis tend to be anenome bait, as I had 2 of 5 mysteriously disappear! I suggest heniochous<-- not sure if thats spelled right but they swim together and are beautiful fish, also ususally readily available at BRK. No aquarium fish actually school though sadly, but my thoughts are the anthias and heniochous are the best looking pseudo schooling fish. my .02
treesprite October 14, 2009 October 14, 2009 I had some and they do eventually "disappear", one by one, though a couple ended up in the overflow (could have been the same one), so the health may have been compromised by that. Initially, I thought they just didn't do well in my tank, but then I started reading stuff about this tendency for them to die off and didn't feel so bad. My chromis did school together, and my clown schooled right along with them! I will not get any more chromis.
Hoyden October 14, 2009 October 14, 2009 I have had 4 green chromis for just over a year - there is a definite hierarchy, but there has been no real aggression - I do feed small amounts multiple times a day - two or three pair swim and there is a definte loner who only joins the group on rare occassions.
