khalid September 21, 2009 September 21, 2009 Why can't I keep any of these suckers alive!!! I got one and it was in my tank for a month or so then out of no where it died.:( He was eating like a champ from day one and was still eating the day before I found him dead and stuck to my vortech. I reef the tank a mixture of frozen spiralina enriched brine, mysis shrimp, and another frozen mixture. I mix everything together and keep it soaked it Selcon and kent extreme garlic. All the tank mates are peaceful and consist of 3 wrasses, a hogfish, and a mis bared clown. What am I doing wrong??? This is one of my favorite fish and would like to be able to keep one alive. The tank is a 72 bow. Thanks, Khalid

Now he's one of my favorites - always follows me around the room, even during 'dark' times in the tank. What big eyes he has! No garlic, no selcon - he graduated from aiptasia to mysis without a problem. Eats funny - sucks in a shrimp, spits out half of it. Sucks in another - and spits out half of it. Better luck on the next one! bob Edited September 21, 2009 by lanman
Ryan S September 21, 2009 September 21, 2009 Bad luck, perhaps? I think it probably is luck. I am 0/1 on CBB's myself. I'll try again someday. Quite often they just won't eat after bringing them home and they will starve to death. At least that's what I've been told.
epleeds September 21, 2009 September 21, 2009 i have had one for the last few months now. he ate all my aptasia and has been picking at my rocks since then. i dont see him eating anything when i feed, but he still seems healthy. sometimes they do good in captivity and sometimes they dont. its hit or miss.
Sikryd September 21, 2009 September 21, 2009 My buddy have gone through 4 of them and finally quit. A couple met the Vortecs which was no good. They seem to be a little more sensitive to shipping than some others.
basser9 September 21, 2009 September 21, 2009 ALWAYS HAVE ONE IN MY TANK EASY TO KEEP IF YOU FEED BLACKWORMS AND HAVE A LOT OF ROCK.
Hilary September 21, 2009 September 21, 2009 I had one for about 9 months that ate frozen like a pig. Then one day he just disappeared. No sign of illness.....
khalid September 21, 2009 Author September 21, 2009 Thanks all, I guess it's just my luck or the vortec took him out. :( He was eating like a pig and would try to get the food before it even got out of the net so I thought he was going to be one that survived. I guess I will have to try again and hopefully it will work out.
jamal September 22, 2009 September 22, 2009 none of this info is true copperband butterfly fish have a horrible survival rate particular those from the indo-pacific region. they often come in sick and many never recover. they are prone to disease and digestive problems. luck has nothing to do with relative success or failure with a fish this delicate. butterflies are generally delicate and this one is no different.
Jager September 22, 2009 September 22, 2009 one of the largest issues with copperbands, and butterflies in general is the way they are shipped. bags that are laid on the side tend to keep the fish "laying down" which seems to prevent sudden bursts of movement against the bags. this lessens the chance of damaging their mouths, which for most butterflies is a death sentence. the biggest reason fish are not shipped this way, is due to how much extra space is lost by doing so. if you are receiving a butterfly, try to have the bag shipped laying down, or transpot it yourself laying down. that will give you the best shot. jamal is also right above, seeing as most of the horror stories of butterflies randomly dying tend to be because of failure to eat, parasites, etc, i highly recommend having one of the local stores order in, those in the club with them that have survived seem to have come from one of the stores in the area and was eating during its stay.
