I'm having a difficult time removing coralline algae from the acrylic on several tanks. I use a Kent Proscraper with the red acrylic blade- it's a P.O.S.!

I recall someone saying there was a better alternative- does anyone know of this gizmo?

Credit card or another piece of acrylic with a nice square cut are other options. The best one is probably to go glass....

I used a sheet of acrylic on my tank with a fresh cut. The problem is that it wears down after awhile and you have to resort to elbow grease again.

Use this combination and laugh at the glass heads:

http://www.magnavore.com/ - use this often for a few minutes a day or every few days and keep the old credit cards or promo cards in the mail for stubborn spots. The credit card is softer than the acrylic and won't scratch the acrylic but will easily remove the algae. I've owned acrylic for more years than many of the members here have been alive and acrylic is not hard to clean and keep scratch free.

OK, I finally tried out the ice scraper for my car last night. The ones with the hard acrylic blade. What took me hours to do before was done in about 15 minutes. I also have a Great White algae magnet that can't accomplish what I did in a few minutes. The entire front is cleaned and ready for viewing again! I got the idea from seeing a picture that I believe ctenophore posted of an acrylic paint scraper. I spent some time looking for one of them but didn't find one so now I'm looking for more of the ice scrapers as soon as winter hits!

Please post pic/link here whenever you find it. I'm intrigued and have MUCH acrylic to clean here!

Cheers

That's terrific news, Dave. From time to time, I thought about doing the same thing. Only thing is, I can't find the scraper in my garage. I guess I'll be waiting for stores to stock up for winter, too.

Did it scratch your tank at all?? Something that hard, I'd imagine there would be an increased risk to scratch the acrylic.

No scratches, my scratches were there from the cleaning magnet being used by someone doing remodeling in the house. They scratched the heck out of the front of the tank, knocked the magnet off, and didn't tell me. Problem is we had three different crews of people in the house that day and I don't know which one did it. Now that I can clearly see the scratches again I'll be using some sand paper to grind them out. They're not deep scratches, fortunately, more like an astrea or chunk of coralline getting caught under the magnet and dragged across. I'll see if I can find the scraper I used online, otherwise I'll snap a picture of it and post it here.

I have requested some samples from one of the online logo companies and they are supposed to send me some. If anyone is interested, I'll test these out and see how they do, perhaps take some scrap acrylic and see if I can scratch them up with these, and then possibly do an order on them. They sell in large lots (100+) but it might be cool to get some with some silly logo on them...

Interested. Thanks. Keep us posted.

Here's the one I used, it's a Carrand SubZero ice scraper with shock absorber. They cost about $6 (http://www.amazon.com/Carrand-SubZero-Scraper-Shock-Absorber/dp/B0002JM9DA) online.

With a DVD for size reference.

The entire thing.

The edge - it's not super sharp or perfectly smooth, but it is much harder than the pieces of acrylic I was using before and it offers the extra comfort of the handle. I was thinking of creating some sort of handle to add torque to the thing, basically strap it to the forearm so that it works better, but haven't gotten to that point yet.

As far as the samples I requested, I asked a few different online suppliers so I'm not sure which brand they are but once I get them I'll take a look and see.

Look at that shock absorber! Built to remove really heavy coralline build up.
