cbatkinson May 25, 2009 May 25, 2009 I'm going out of the country for a week and my water temp is starting to get hotter and hotter (high 80s)...I'd rather not run my AC the entire time while I'm gone. Does anyone have any thoughts about a chiller, or have one I can rent/borrow for the 8 days I'm gone? Any other thoughts about reducing water temp would be appreciated. Thanks
Vader May 25, 2009 May 25, 2009 Do you have a fan that can run over your sump? That may help some....
sportzfish May 25, 2009 May 25, 2009 If it helps reduce your light cycle. I went away for more than a week and things seemed to be OK by doing that.
reefmontalvo May 25, 2009 May 25, 2009 Just remember if you run a fan over your sump your evaporation will in most cases double. So make sure you have a rather larger than normal freshwater reservoir.
lanman May 25, 2009 May 25, 2009 Might I assume you have someone to watch over your tank while you're gone? What kind of lighting? Halides? I have my AC-III programmed to shut off the lights if the temperature hits 82. High 80's will kill some kinds of coral - probably won't make the fish too happy, either. I don't know what you're keeping - but running the A/C is probably a good idea, if you want it all to be alive on your return. You never know when we might have a heat wave. bob
flowerseller May 25, 2009 May 25, 2009 running the A/C in your house for the 8 days you're gone might cost you $25. Renting or borrowing a chiller, plumbing it in, un plumbing it, and the cost to run/rent/get/take back from the week your gone $$$ Replacing what you might loose instead of simply cooling the house for the 8 days you're gone $$$ $25 very well spent.
zygote2k May 25, 2009 May 25, 2009 Maybe you have too many pumps that generate excess heat. Try using eductors. +1 on Flowemans suggestion.
trockafella May 26, 2009 May 26, 2009 +1 with rob and chip... In a hobby so expensive, why be so cheap about it.. Dont wipeout an entire system over not running the a/c for a week.. Close all the blinds, turn on a ceiling fan and run the a/c, no need to keep it real low, you wont have a tv on, a computer or any other device that makes heat..
reefmontalvo May 26, 2009 May 26, 2009 I have a 120 with dual 25w MH and I run those lights for about 10hrs a day. I keep the house around 74 and it is rare I see the temp go to 83. I would say an average temp durng the week would be 81 and that is without the sump fan running.
rioreef May 26, 2009 May 26, 2009 No brainer. Run the AC and have a good trip so you do not have to worry about things.
