I had been using Kents Tech-M but it is getting expensive. What do you guys use? Dow MagFlakes and Epson posiblly??? If so does anyone extra laying around to part with?

I use Mag pellets (manufactured by Dead Sea Works). It's just a pelleted form of Mag Flake which is actually a bit cheaper. Both can be found at Harvey Salt Company up on Baltimore for under $20 for a 50 pound bag. Alternatively, you can buy magnesium chloride from bulkreefsupplies.com.

Is there anywhere that sells MAG flakes (MG Cl) and/or Espon Salt (MG Sulfate) locally? Baltimore would be a bit of a treck for me...

Home depot/lowes would sell Mag flakes, Espon Salt can be bought at a drug store. However I wouldn't use it long term.

Wouldn't use either long term or just the epson salt??? why not?

wouldn't use epson salt long term

Do you mean Epson Salts alone? That would be due to the build up of Sulphate, right?

The Chloride / Sulphate balance can be kept by using a 10:1 mixture of 10 parts Magnesium Chloride (mag flake) to 1 part Magnesium Sulphate (epsom salt). That is close to the balance in seawater.

yea just curius as to his position on no epson long term, maybe he meant to just just epson salt like you were saying??? seems common practice these days to use both at 7/1 or 10/1.

Tom,

You had the following good advice in the "mag cloride or sulfate, what is the difference" thread.....

Reef Central has a lot on the subject. The only brand that's been tested and which has Randy Holmes-Farley's approval is manufactured by Dead Sea Works. Either flakes or pellets are acceptable as long as it's from DSW. Other brands may have other impurities that have not been characterized so you take on the risk of the unknown with other sources. Of course, you can also get magnesium chloride from other sources, like bulkreefsupply.com.
