So my buddy was given a tank and thought it would be cool to have saltwater fish, which is fine, but he has decided to start it already and isnt using RO water, is this ok in a fish only system, he has no plans to add coral at all, just fish... what do you think..?

I used tap water for at least a year when I first started - and I've heard of plenty of others doing the same. He may battle some additional algae issues, but I don't think it will have any negative effect on the livestock.

Yeah, algae was my main concern as well.. He wont be using any high powered lighting, or anything like that.. Im just not to familiar with fish only, i started off on a reef tank and never looked back, so i wasnt sure of the requirements... Thanks and happy to here other opinions..

I would not for a moment consider using Arlington Co or DC tap water --its poison. Among a whole list of toxic chemicals it also has some radioactive chems that are at the highest level allowed by law. Use it if you want to try for a strange mutation.

I picked-up 2 used RO units and just use the pre-filter sections. 1=mechanical(sediment), 2&3=carbon, 4=chemipure, 5=poli-filter. That plus a RDSB & cleanup-crew & water-changes seem to work for me.

When I got my fist tank the guy before was just using tap water...

When I upgrade to my 90g, I bought an RO/DI unit. There was certainly less algae growth. To me it's certainly worth the money to ensure that your putting quality water in your tank.. Plus maybe one day you will want to add some mushrooms, zoas etc...
