gmubeach December 13, 2008 December 13, 2008 DON'T COOK LIVE ROCK PPL HAVE GONE TO THE HOSPITAL FOR IT!!!!!
lanman December 13, 2008 December 13, 2008 I guess I'm gonna go for the nutrients first. The tank has no Liverock anymore and it's cooking in a cooler. Going for more salt for water changes tomorrow. What do you mean by 'cooking'?? Keep in mind that your live rock is what cycles ammonia and nitrites out of there. Last I saw you still had some living fish? Corals? bob
capsfan December 13, 2008 Author December 13, 2008 Throw it in the cooler and let it sit for a while to get rid of the hair algae. Only 8 frags of GSP and some fish in the tank.

gmubeach December 13, 2008 December 13, 2008 No the reason your not supposed to cook it is the fact that it has coral on it or other stuff it will be in the air not sure what you meant by cooking either:) anyway someone was tanken to the hospital for boiling some brown zoos best of luck Troy
capsfan December 13, 2008 Author December 13, 2008 There is absolutely positively NO coral on the rock, and just forget the term "cooking". I took the rock out of the tank, scrubbed it down with a toothbrush, and then put it in a cooler full of saltwater at about 80 degrees. The only reason I'm doing this is to have time to go get salt to do some water changes and siphon out leftover detritus and hair algae. Then ill put the liverock back in the tank and run some stuff through to get rid of the nutrients. The rock is just in a holding stage in a cooler. It won't be out of the tank, but for just a couple of days.

Just wondered if you were using light deprivation or something to kill the hair algae. Which is not a bad idea, actually. Do you have some 'starting' water quality readings? bob

capsfan December 16, 2008 Author December 16, 2008 Phase 1.. COMPLETE! Here is the tank as of now. I need to get some phosphate removing media. Any suggestions? Oh yeah, and my GSP for science fair... Heh heh I was thinking... It kind of looks like salad!
lanman December 16, 2008 December 16, 2008 Tell us what all you did to get rid of all that algae! bob
capsfan December 17, 2008 Author December 17, 2008 Tell us what all you did to get rid of all that algae! bob It's going to come back if I don't do anything else. Haven't messed w/ any nutrients. I just took all the rock out an scrubbed it with a toothbrush and vacuumed out some detritus.

Yeah - it will come back; but get some snails and hermits that eat the stuff, and maybe they can keep it under control, while you eradicate nitrates and phosphates... bob
Sugar Magnolia December 17, 2008 December 17, 2008 Looks great Tyler. I use Phosban to keep phosphates in check. I don't have a reactor, just toss the bag in my canister filter.
MLazar December 17, 2008 December 17, 2008 WELL DONE! Looks wonderful, so glad you put in the effort (and that you shared the pictures). Can't wait to see what you add next. Maureen
m3fan8ic December 17, 2008 December 17, 2008 Looks great. I had to use bleach to get rid of mine..rocks cured in no time once mixed with LS and few LR pieces. I tried scurbbing etc which didn't work.
